Top 10 College Basketball Coaches

In mid-October, we blogged this entry related to Stewart Mandel’s list of The Best and The Worst College Football coaches.

Today, Mandel shares his Top 10 active college basketball coaches.

Mandel qualifies his rankings as follows:

Much like I’ve done the past two seasons for football, the following list is an attempt to rank the sport’s top-10 coaches right now. It is not a career-achievement list, so while a coach’s track record obviously plays a huge part in his reputation, more weight was placed on his most recent performances (sorry, Lute Olson). Similarly, only those who have been head coaches for at least three seasons were considered (sorry, Anthony Grant).

As for the criteria, winning championships and getting to Final Fours is the benchmark by which all college coaches are judged. But I also placed added value on coaches who get more out of less, have recently rebuilt programs or whose imprint is clearly visible in the way their teams play.

We were working on this entry when I saw that ACCNow had already made some comments.

Kudos to ACCNow for recognizing:

Like Pete Carroll in football, recent success trumps career achievement on Mandel’s list. He went with, surprise!, Billy Donovan at No. 1.

Ol’ Roy before K? Jim Calhoun in front of K? Hmmm. Don’t necessarily agree but it’s Mandel’s world.

This list makes no sense whatsoever.

If this is supposed to focus on recent history – why is Ben Howland ranked so low??? All Ben’s done is take UCLA to the Final 4 back to back…

It would help if actually mentioned his criteria. There really is no criteria except to apparently piss off Duke fans and give the Tar Heels another reason to hang a banner: Roy Williams Top 10 Coach 2007.

  2. Pack92 04/11/2007 at 4:05 PM #

He does mention “ol Roys wins. Pity he does not show how many other coaches had that many wins and only one NC. Roy could hang the “Most Chokes” banner. If only Illinois would have completed the comeback…

Maybe chrishole will show up and enlighten us.

So is this the last 3 years or maybe he should just say this:

“If I was king and a coach had to come coach for me at the school of my choice, here would be how I ranked the Top 10….Mind you, the only thing that counts here is my opinion..”

biggest waste of a tree i have ever seen . where is chain and lock so i can save a tree.

You rang trixie? What do you want to know?

  8. beowolf 04/11/2007 at 4:59 PM #

I can’t help noticing in the SFN archives the comment “just be thankful that we are excited about the rest of football” — which preceeded the longest losing streak in NC State history.

  9. tractor57 04/11/2007 at 5:03 PM #

In my opinion this article is a total waste. The supposition that he used recent accomplishments doesn’t bear out when you actually read the article. Wonder how many trees we lost to print this garbage (I hope it is ‘net only as we can spare electrons easier than we can trees.

Beilien misses the NCAA tournament and just out the top 10? I don’t doubt that he is a good coach and that the final four teams in the NIT are probably better teams at the end of the season than 50% of the NCAA tournament field but still odd to see him so high.

I don’t see what is so outrageous about this list. Most of the choices make complete sense to me except for having a guy like Billy Gilespie in there.

  12. redfred2 04/11/2007 at 6:45 PM #

    t-t-t

Beilein runs the PO, I tell you it is a mind altering offense that makes the NIT the equal of the NCAAT, and all of the coaches who run it, godlike in the eyes of the media. We should know. But seriously, the man may truly be a great coach and one of the tops in the nation, but he hasn’t quite proven it just yet.

mr o i bet if you had asked if that was a great coaching job after gt game you would have had another answer .

This list is just dumb. First, he says the list is based on recent performance, then goes on to list Calhoun and Krzyzewski at 3 and 4, despite the fact that they’ve both had teams that underachieved the past few years. This while leaving Gillispie and Howland at the bottom of the list, despite the fact that they’ve been outstanding in recent years. The inclusion of Barnes and and Self on the “just missed” list is also ridiculous (especially after Barnes failed to get the ball to Durant all year and Self got completely outcoached by Howland in the tournament). This list should be titled “Top 10 big names”, not top 10 coaches.

  15. Mr O 04/11/2007 at 9:02 PM #

K has won 8 of the last 10 ACC titles. Duke has had a ridiculous run in the ACC in recent years.

It doesn’t say it is based on recent performance only, but a combination of everything so that is why K isn’t at the top of the list as he should be if it was based on career achievement(notice you don’t see Bobby Knight).

I really don’t get the fascination with Billy G at this point. Sure, he is a good coach, but there is no reason he should be any higher on the list.

  16. Mr O 04/11/2007 at 9:07 PM #

Who in their right mind would put Ben Howland in front of hall of famers like the five coaches ahead of him? Each of those five coaches has a much better overall resume, not to mention recent achievements like conference titles, final fours and national titles.

    Donavan
    R. Williams
    Calhoun
    Coach K
    Pitino

Howland and/or Gilespie are supposed to be above these guys?

  17. choppack1 04/11/2007 at 9:16 PM #

Mr O – I’m just guessing at his rules. His rules appear to be who is coaching the best at this point and time. The last 2 years only one coach has performed better – Billy Donovan.

If it’s historical – Coach K goes first, then Donovan, then Calhoun, then Pitino, then Roy…

  18. xphoenix87 04/11/2007 at 9:54 PM #

we’re not talking about historical performance, it’s about who the best coach is right now. Duke has been disappointing the last few years. They lost in the sweet sixteen with 2 first team all-americans, then they bowed out this year to VCU to end an underachieving season. Calhoun’s situation is very similar. Over the past few years, Howland has been better than all of them. He took a UCLA program that had struggled under Steve Lavin and turned it around to consecutive Final Fours within 4 years. Only Donovan and Williams can make a claim to being as good recently.

  19. Mr O 04/11/2007 at 10:07 PM #

UCLA was only down for one season prior to Howland’s arrival. Lavin had been to something like 5 final 8s IIRC.

Where did he say the cutoff was the last two years?

Obviously this is a combination of accomplishments with a focus on recent(last 5-8 years) success.

as much sh!t as that nappy-headed ho Sewage Mandel gave us last year about HWSNBN, I find it shocking that HWSNBN was not on the list.

  21. BJD95 04/12/2007 at 6:29 AM #

FWIW, I do expect Roy to have more success than K going forward.

  22. BoKnowsNCS71 04/12/2007 at 7:40 AM #

Mandel is brilliant. And boring. This is so easy a cave man could do it. And he did.

  23. Cedarblockhead 04/12/2007 at 7:42 AM #

    Don’t forget the “great one”.

He lead us to five NCAA tournament apperances. He has to be in the mix somewhere.

  24. BoKnowsNCS71 04/12/2007 at 7:57 AM #

I can’t wait until tomorrow for 11 thru 20th. Maybe he will do the bottom 10 too.

  25. BoKnowsNCS71 04/12/2007 at 8:24 AM #

Here’s a laugable list with some even crazier (satirical) logic.

    1. Billy Donavan — I mean he won the NCCAT twice in 2 years. He must be smart.
    2. Thad Motta — Well he came in 2nd.
tie 3 and 4 — Ben Howland John Thompson — they made it to the Final 4 and I wanted to be sure at least one African American was represented in my list.
5 Ernie Kent – Orgeon after all he lost to FL. And anyone who would be a Duck coach has to be good.
    6. Jim Calipari — after all he lost to OSU #2 and he was considered for the NCSU job last year.
    7. Roy Williams — after all he lost to GT and advertises for Coca Cola.
    8. Bill Self — after all he lost to UCLA and repalced Roy W so he must be as good.
9 Billy Gillespie — after all he was in the sweet 16, was hired at Kentucky for a fat salary. Fat salaries must mean greatness right?
10 . Bruce Pearl – partially because he beat FLorida in the SEC and truly is doing some amazing work at TN and mostly to disrespect the coaches at UNLV, Texas, DukeAMEX, et al.

Dang — I got 60% of the ones that Mr. Mandel selected just using my own cave man logic. Imagine that.
