Why Not Some Football?

Even though it is ACC Tournament week, we thought that we shouldn’t lose sight of the football program in light of a nice piece in the Richmond Times Dispatch this weekend.

This article focuses on Tom O’Brien and NC State football.

O’Brien sat down for an interview in which he marveled at the passion and enthusiasm of Wolfpack fans.

“What it means to be part of the program at State has been tremendous,” he said.

He’s not in a pro town anymore, and that’s part of what made the State job so appealing to O’Brien. For better or worse, the Wolfpack is big news in Raleigh and many parts of North Carolina.

In Boston, he noted, no matter how much BC wins, “you’re never going to be the Red Sox, you’re never going to be the Patriots. I don’t know if you’ll be the Celtics or the Bruins. That’s a fact of life.”

O’Brien said he missed the excitement that comes from college rivalries.

“I grew up playing Army-Navy, coaching Army-Navy, coaching Virginia-Virginia Tech,” he said. “Then you went to Boston, and there was nothing. We tried to make Notre Dame our rival, but they didn’t want to have a rivalry with us.”

He has a rival now, of course – that “other school” over in Chapel Hill. If O’Brien had any doubts that State could compete with North Carolina and the rest of the ACC, they vanished Sept. 23, when BC played in Raleigh.

Since he’d last seen Carter-Finley Stadium 11 years earlier, State had made “mind-boggling” improvements to its facilities, O’Brien recalled. And the raucous atmosphere that night, when the Wolfpack rallied to beat the Eagles 17-15, floored him.

“I go back to the passion and the enthusiasm [that State fans] have for their program,” O’Brien said. “When we walked out of there, even my wife said, ‘Boy, what happened to this place? It wasn’t the cow pasture we were in 11 years ago.'”

Dear Coach, some of us are a little sensive to the whole cow pasture thing. I would offer the friendly suggestion of not using that story again.

^^I’m sure he meant to add, “Not that there’s anything wrong with cow pastures — some of my best friends have cow pastures.”

    “…cow pasture…”

Mrs TOB better watch her P’s & Q’s around here.

They could be talking about the grounds. There has been a lot of change to C-F and the surrounding area in the last 11 years. Also, the fact that the lot was full probably changes the perspective as well. It was pretty much a cow pasture – not it is entirely different. However, I do think TOB might want to replace the word “cow pasture” w/ something like “boy this area has blowed up!”

Yep, back then we had a cow pasture to park in and could tailgate all day and night!

“IT’S DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL!”…always a good time to talk some football, great piece…39 days until spring game!

Boy we’re a sensitive bunch today… I personally appreciate the pat on the back from our coach instead of the stab in the back we’ve had to get used to over the past few years.

I think Amato made far worse comments about the state of the program when he first got here, like all the unfair comparisons to FSU. It’s also great to hear he had North Carolina’s finest at State’s Junior Days. It seems like NC’s elite for 2008 are quite talented.

I agree with GAWolf. Nice comments. I have a cow pasture and I’m not offended.

You have to project your own negative connotation to cow pastures in order to take offense at his “cow pasture” comment.

Good lord people, that was a joke up there.

I think GoldenChain meant his comment as a joke, and now some of you are taking it too seriously.

I hope that what was once referred to as a cow pasture is not eventually called the “cow palace” but I guess that is better than “Sheep Thrills” over in CH.

I always appreciated the fact that I went to “Moo U.” Being from a small Eastern North Carolina town, I wore that badge proudly. The funny thing is when I was in law school in Georgia the kids at UGA were quite fond of their agriculture-heritage.

I don’t really get the whining. Is it just the Charlotte-based NC State fans that truly take offense to this?

  15. noah 03/06/2007 at 4:10 PM #

“Cow Pasture” was a pretty accurate term, IMO, to describe C-F a few decades ago.

    Signed,
Went to a high school located between two cow pastures

  16. TNCSU 03/06/2007 at 4:13 PM #

I’m proud of saying I went to Moo U, too. I’m glad it still takes almost 30 minutes to get from AGRICULTURE to LACKOFCULTURE!

  17. RedTerror29 03/06/2007 at 4:18 PM #

This Charlotte-based NC State fan doesn’t take offense to “Moo U.” But maybe that’s because I grew up in rural NC and my grandfather went to State to study agriculture.

I think those who only went to State because they got in and didn’t get into Carolina take the most offense to it, because they want to pretend they went to a school just like UNC, and they have a built in inferiority complex.

Anyone who does not remember the parking lots around CF before the ESA was built don’t really know what TOB is talking about. It ABSOLUTELY looked like a cow pasture… and damned nice one at that! Very few numbered spaces to get us all in a row – just a bunch of guys in orange vests pointing where to go. It was much nicer to be standing in the cool tall grass on a saturday afternoon rather than a smokin hot asphalt parking lot.

Yep, that was some cow pasture.

  21. WolfPup35 03/06/2007 at 8:33 PM #

Yup, it was one of the nicest cow pastures I have ever been in, and for the most part, you didn’t even have to watch your step! Sometimes I actually miss it. The one thing that I truly love about CFS is the large “Alcoholic Beverages Prohibited” signs over the main gates, the the computer printed “Please do not throw liquor bottles in the toilets.” signs in the restrooms…now THAT’S classic!

Don’t forget the times that the UNC-State game coincided with the State Fair. If it was raining, you could watch the game then stomp through the muddy fields to go see real cows! If the wind was right you definitely knew you were in a cow pasture, even while sitting at the top of Section 15. Then again, that aroma could have been coming from the boys in blue.

  24. highstick 03/06/2007 at 10:23 PM #

Yep, those were the days we could take a cooler of beer and a bucket of chicken into the games. Then State Admin decided that they wanted the concessions revenue to be higher so they banned the chicken. The cooler was still ok.

Yep, I miss that ole cow pasture.
