Good to see a little slamma jamma going on again. They have been few and far between the last 10 or so, although I do remember one player (not Melvin but another down low player) dunking balls to face on the 7ft Maryland player several years ago.

They played it all over Sportscenter at the time.

I will tell you the lack of S.C. coverage on the pack is pretty weak. I was in Puerto Rico the night of the Michigan win and you would think the next day it would have gotten some damn coverage. Not one damn booyah. I had to get on the Internets to find out we won…of course it was this site…not espn that I went to.

When the Carolina game gets here, I’d like to see that video of Sidney Lowe passing the ball between his legs to Thurl Baily who slams it all over Sam Perkins.

^Sword, that may have been Julius Hodge taking one down the lane during the ACC tournament against Maryland a three(?) years ago. That was the same year we went to the sweet sixteen I believe.

That Lowe to Bailey play should be up on the viewer at EVERY FREAKING GAME!!! With a big “WATCH OUT…..UH HUH!!!” coming from the crowd.

It just makes me sad to think what Bennerman, Bethel, and Evtimov could have done under Sidney Lowe’s tutelage. Tony Bethel’s cousin (Wal-Mart Hole fan) works in the same building I work in and he says Tony, while not saying anything disrespectful about Herb (classy), does say he wishes he could play for Sidney.

And I agree with fred–the Lowe to Bailey pass and dunk should be an every-game highlight.

How about Cam Bennerman against Duke??? Sheldon Williams I think??? But I could way off there. Anyway they showed a slo-mo replay on the rim cam. Bennerman went up and the defender’s hand was right there, blocking the rim, then all of a sudden it was like Bennerman had eyes in his fingers, he held the ball for a split second, and twisted his wrist, then jammed it through sideways, from the back corner of the rim.
It may not be that awesome in replay, but it was a hell of a play when it happened.

A few years to late for one of our great early season tourneys. I keep thinking that was just a dream that State played some tournament in PR in what appeared to be a HS gym with the bleachers that pull out from the wall.

Great observation blog…

While I think the game overall has lost something as so many kids grow up not learning how to do anything on the court except dunk, you cannot discount the impact highlight dunks have inside a game as well as for your program’s overall exposure…

I swear, I used to think Paul Hewitt kept Ishmail Muhammed in the game just to do SportsCenter dunks and get recruits excited about his program…

Not that UNC ever needed any extra exposure, but how many times did we have to watch David Noel, a respectable but not great player, do highlight dunks in prime SportsCenter time??

Let’s face it, we have seen plenty of great fundamental basketball out of Wisconsin and Air Force and others, but those guys will probably never win a national title. And, even the greatest purists at heart don’t grow up dreaming about winning a game with 4 great passes and a backdoor in the last seconds of a game, so what do you expect recruits today to dream about??

We were the better TEAM, the more fundamentally sound TEAM, in 1983 and made a lot of great passes and jumpshots to pull it off, but you can’t discount the impact of that first DUNK Thurl threw down on Houston in both raising his own team’s confidence AND smacking the opponents psyche in sending a message to the favorites that the underdogs had come to play…(not mentioning the last second winning “shot” being more memorable and played more than others because it was a dunk)…

Nice to see us dunking like it matters again and look forward to seeing some future highlights in prime SportsCenter time…

And remember in ’83 Guy Lewis said “The team with the most dunks wins”.
He was right – 2 -1 NCSU (first points and the last).

I really like Lowe’s first team – undermanned yes but they don’t shy away from anyone.

I can’t remember who it was for Houston in ’83 that predicted the team with the most dunks would win but he was correct: NC State 2 v. Houston 1.

i remember that dunk, and the best thing about it was that cam and the alien jumped at the same time, but when their arms got close cam pulled the ball back to avoid the block, williams couldnt stay in the air and cam still flushed it in his face. awesome

It’s just like a hard hit in FB, it can sometimes send a message that says, we’re not intimidated, or makes a statement like saying, ain’t nothin’ you can do.

Although, people argue me about it, I am kinda glad it was illegal in DT’s day. He was just UP THERE, WAY, WAY UP THERE, hanging around about 44″+ above the hardwood and waiting on the pass, then casually checking his watch before he gently dropging it through the hoop. There certainly wasn’t any need to rush any of that. It was an awe inspiring thing of beauty, and everyone, even the opposing players, just stopped and watched with mouths wide open. There was absolutely nothing anyone could do to stop it anyway.
