Logan Outlines Recruiting Risk of Johnson Hire

As many in the NC State community seem to work to convince themselves that hiring Navy’s Paul Johnson would be a great hire, 850TheBuzz’s Steve Logan did a fantastic job of highlighting some challenges that Paul Johnson is going to face on the all-important recruiting trail.

Remember, whomever NC State hires will be recruiting against Carolina’s Butch Davis who has NFL Head Coaching experience and has been extremely successful at a high profile Division One program.

On his radio show today, Logan stressed the importance of selling the NFL to the type of high school talent that comprise the programs in major conferences like the ACC. As he does with most topics on his show, Logan offered his perspective as if “he were the coach” in a situation. He stated that if he were at Carolina recruiting against Paul Johnson that he would stress the importance of the NFL to any player that he recruited on the offensive side of the ball.

Offensive Line – I will teach you how to pass block so you can make the NFL.

Quarterback – I will teach you how to throw.

Running Back – I will teach you how pass block for the NFL.

Wide Receiver – I will teach you to how to run block like the NFL, how to catch like the NFL, etc.

The message is clear – Paul Johnson has had legitimate success that deserves acknowledgement and recognition, but his system may create problems while trying to recruit the kind of talent that typically resides in conferences like the ACC.

We don’t have an educated opinion on this topic yet, but would love to hear your thoughts.

That is a good point. However, I still think PJ would be a good hire if somebody like Cowher or Chow doesn’t come. He seems similar to Dick Sheridan where he gets the absolute most of all his players.

Johnson used the system to win games. Chuck Amato was an excellent recruiter, but didn’t yield the desired (and expected) wins. I remember SECers saying that Meyer’s system wouldn’t work in the SEC. Granted, it may not be a fair comparison b/c we’re talking about Florida and they have no problem landing blue chip players. There are a lot of things about Johnson’s system that recruits would love. I believe PJ would evaluate the talent on hand and implement the best system. It wouldn’t be exactly like what we see at Navy.

I can’t think of a negative thing about NCSU hiring Johnson. I’d be thrilled.

the recent success of pete carroll and charlie weiss in reviving dormant programs lends itslef to the arguement that a former pro coach—asst. in the case of weiss—might have a leg up on the college game—the transition from college to pro has been rocky for most—spurrier being the most recent example—however—the flip side has worked well for other schools beside usc and nd who have taken this route—mike riley at oregon state is another example—if this trend is a viable indicator of success—the hire of butch davis does not bode well for the pack—and—the question begs—should our search turn in the direction of the nfl?

oops.. Didnt I say this yesterday? The spread offense doesnt work in the NFL. Too much speed at end, linebacker, and safety. The only player that might make it work is maybe Vick. Someone with ungodly speed. The kids who play in it in college will be a step behind.

Pat White is great. But that kid is not being prepared for the NFL. Quincy Wilson was awesome at WVa. What happened to him? I’m just not a believer.

We can only speculate on wether PJ would run his current offense or adjust to something closer to the NFL with the type of talent he should have at NCSU. Do I dare give the AD and the powers that be enough credit to assume this is something they would discuss with PJ in an interview process?

I don’t understand the “he will recruit against Butch Davis.” If he is going after the best then he will be going up against every coach in the south east. There is enough talent on this team to win now with Johnson as a head coach so win and the recruits will follow.

    Johnson: come play for State

Recruit: Coach Davis wants me to play for him

Johnson: Our team beat them by 30 last year, do you really want to go through that?

Recruit: OK I will play for the Pack.

  7. PackBacker001 11/29/2006 at 3:35 PM #

^ Dexter, that will be a valid argument if we ever beat any team by 30. To do so would require scoring more than 24 points.

    A couple of thoughts here:

    1) This is a valid concern w/ PJ, but we don’t really know how’d he’s going to react now that he can fill his roster w/ a different type of athlete. Chances are good that running backs will be very interested in his style. OL’s love to block, and PJ would know more about selling the benefits of his style than I would.

    2) Defensively – he should still be able to recruit great athletes.

    3) How Norm Chow or Mike Sherman compete against Butch Davis and Chapel Hill anyhoo? It seems to me Butch has several advantages. There’s not a coach on our radar who has built a national championship college team AND coached in the pros. Even if we get Chow or Sherman or someone else w/ NFL experience or implementing their system, it won’t do us much good if a) we finish in second place (after taking that argument off the table) and b) if we lose to them on the football field.

I do think this is a legit concern, but I think it’s one of the few drawbacks where other coaches have more significant ones.

I believe Coach Logan makes a good point, but it is more complex than that. Based on his assertion, Coach Davis automatically has the inside track on most of the coaches in the NCAA, because few have NFL backgrounds. So starting with Coach Davis’ first recruiting class, the rest of us can’t recruit against the Blue Goats??
    That won’t be the case.
I don’t know much about PJ, so I can’t really comment on him. But I believe NFL experience is more a ‘nice to have’ than a requirement. It will be an advantage, but so are facilities, coaching success, program success, players going to the NFL from the program, and other stuff I can’t think of.

I just hope we learned from how foolish we looked during the BB coach recruiting and do this with dignity, and do it well.

  10. Tau837 11/29/2006 at 3:44 PM #

I think this argument is far down the list of important criteria for choosing our next coach.

We’ve had a team loaded with talent that underachieves on the field. I’d rather have a team with less talent, but have that talent fulfill or even (gasp) exceed its potential on the field. Any day.

And, as others have said, Johnson has proven he can coach. To use his offense as a point of criticism implies that he cannot or will not adjust the offense if he has better talent. I don’t accept that as a given.

  11. Buck 11/29/2006 at 3:47 PM #

PJ would still be a great hire. Everything you said about PJ could have been said about Grobe. Logan may be right that that is his challenge but PJ has met challenges, and come out on top, everywhere he’s been.

Everyone wants to play for a winner.

    Just win, Baby.

  13. pack7483 11/29/2006 at 3:55 PM #

watch WTVD tonight at 6pm……Bill Cowher will be on

  14. Dan 11/29/2006 at 3:59 PM #

    chop.

“but we don’t really know how’d he’s going to react now that he can fill his roster”

The most important four words of that post are “we don’t really know”.

That is the problem. No one does. We just cant make a hire based on something no one knows. Especially something as big as what type of offense he will run. This is at least a five year committment. We cant risk five years when “we don’t really know how’d he’s going to react”.

Again, he’s a great coach. Its not anything against him. Its the spread.

We are saved, just read that Gary Barnett wants the State job.

Okay sarcasm off, if Logan is correct we should try for Chow, with his history of quarterbacks, we would have our pick of the top QB’s every year.

    What’s up with WTVD, 7483?

  17. pack7483 11/29/2006 at 4:04 PM #

he is making a “statement” live at 6pm…….just watch

  18. highonlowe 11/29/2006 at 4:05 PM #

Wouldn’t it be great if our coach could say,
I will teach you how to play so you can make the NFL and win the Super Bowl

  19. Wolfman300 11/29/2006 at 4:06 PM #

Pack 7483 – Ok, BC will be on the air. Live? You have the connection, so what is the topic for this interview supposed to be? It is way to simple to think he would be live on local TV to voluntarily talk about the coaches job unless it is to stop the rumors that he is a candidate. Any more info? Especially for those of us not local to WTVD to watch.

  20. partialqualifier 11/29/2006 at 4:12 PM #

Paul Johnson is NOT the right man for this job. I saw a reference to Dick Sheridan. Paul Johnson is no Dick Sheridan. Just because they both are a little conservative on offense doesnt make them alike. Hell the coach at my high school hasnt had QB throw a pass in 5 years, but he is certainly no Dick Sheridan!!

I have said this for three days now. Please folks….look at all the candidates b4 you start getting behind one coach or the other. And these idiotic statements like “when we beat UNC, recruits wont care if it’s a pro offense or not.” Are you kidding me? Do you guys have any idea what kind of a coach Butch Davis is? He loves to play defense. His teams at UNC are gonna excel defensively. If we go to Chapel Hill with some half-assed high school offense, Davis will eat our asses up. Periond. And it aint just Davis….look at the strength of the ACC the last couple of years. Defense. There are some awefully good defensive coaches in this league, and we better find someone who can score some damn points.

And please quit comparing Johnson to Grobe. They are 2 entirely different coaches. Furthermore, do you guys really want what Grobe has done? Do u want to recruit mediocre players and go 5-7,6-6 every year with every 5th or 6th season producing peaking to 8 wins or so? Grobe has done a good job this year in the ACC. Johnson is doing a similar job….but at NAVY! Look at their schedule. Do I need to get it and post on here for everyone to see?

Please…just take some time over the next 24 hours to look at all the possibilities out there. If you look at all of them honestly and still choose Johnson so be it. Like I said before….if this guy wasnt from NC he would have no shot in hell of being the next football coach at NC State. Period.

You’re right, we don’t. We basically do know what Butch Davis is going to do and w/in reason, how he’ll do, because he has HC experience. I challenge you to name one candidate – not named BC that we have a good shot at – that doesn’t have huge question marks in some areas.

Yes – PJ may average 10 passes or less a game, but there’s a very good chance he’ll win. As for the other candidates, what evidence do we have that they’ll win? As you said, we can’t afford to mess up. Who is this magical coach w/ a proven track record?

  22. RAWFS 11/29/2006 at 4:17 PM #

“The spread offense doesn’t work in the NFL.”

Perhaps, Dan. But it works very well at the University of Florida and you would have a very hard time convincing me why Tim Tebow is not an NFL caliber player.

  23. 98st8 11/29/2006 at 4:18 PM #

Pack 7483… you can’t just drop that unless you know what the content of the interview will be..comon that just stresses me out for about an hour and a half

  24. Dan 11/29/2006 at 4:20 PM #

“But it works very well at the University of Florida ”

Urban has drastically overhauled that offense since his first year. That offense sucked his first year and he responded beautifully. Yet, it does still have spread elements. Another reason why he struggles against speed. Like FSU.

Don’t believe anything at this point….until the Jed has spoken. Any plane tracking going on? Ha! He won’t make that mistake twice…or will he?
