Tuesday’s Football Update

We are expecting this “search” to be pretty quick and pretty painless.

It now looks as thought things are evolving as it has appeared they would – if Bill Cowher says no then Paul Johnson is the man. We expect that NC State will receive an answer from Bill Cowher by the end of the week (likely Thursday or Friday).

* After our comments yesterday, you really should read this entry focused on Bill Cowher from Dave Glenn’s blog. It is excellent and succinct and should paint the picture that you need regarding Cowher perfectly.

* Adam Gold at 850TheBuzz is reporting that Cowher is not going to accept the job in this blog entry. You should know that Coach Cowher has a pre-scheduled weekly press conference every Tuesday at noon. What Gold is speculating is that Cowher will be asked of the NC State in the press conference and will address the issue at that time where he will tell the public that he is not coming to NC State .

* SFN has no confirmation of Gold’s report.

* Coach Johnson still has the Army/Navy game to coach this weekend, so we would not expect any announcement prior to the conclusion of that game. The timing of this game probably allows NC State to wait a bit longer on Bill Cowher to make a decision.

* Jim Donnan has been lobbying behind the scenes for the job but does not seem to be picking up much traction with Wolfpackers. Seven years ago Donnan was offered the job after Cowher turned it down but chose to remain at Georgia. NC State then hired Chuck Amato.

* Assistant coaches Curt Cignetti and Dick Portee have been retained by NC State to help maintain continuity during the transition period.

Is Paul Johnson the MAN or is he the FAD? I’m quite concerned about him — the steroid stuff in particular. What is it about him that attracts? What are his upsides and downsides?

    Where is Donnan now? Broadcasting?

Turning down our job has to be the dumbest decision he ever made.

I hope like hell that Paul Johnson is NOT the next football coach!!! Please, for the sake of my tickets do NOT hire Johnson. I am not sure that I will have much to say about State football for the next few years if Johnson is the guy. I gave up on basketball the last few years (up unitl now of course!!), and I am very prepared to throw the football program under the bus if we hire the wrong guy! Why is so effing hard for NC State to have 2 dynamic coaches at once? We had Amato in football….with the vanilla Sendek in basketball. Now we have a guy in Lowe who is becoming more dynamic every day and we are gonna hire Paul Johnson? Is it impossible to have 2 young dynamic coaches at NC State? Sometimes it really sucks to be a State fan!

Beowulf: He has won big everywhere he has coached and always produced high powered offenses.

On the flip side, he hasn’t utilized NFL type of offenses to produce those results which could label our football program similar to how Sendek, in a way, systemized our basketball program in the eyes of recruits.

Is Jim Grobe not a consideration at all? Are we not even going to try for this guy? What he has done at Wake is nothing short of a miracle. He is by far the best coach in the ACC and you know he wont stay at Wake for long. Lets pick this guy up now!!!

Donnan works for ESPN on the weekends.

I think lots of coaches can win with the talent we have coming back next year and a winning season and renewed excitement will bring the recruits. I don’t see a negative with Johnson, he wins and is a NC native. that could mean a long term loyal relationship. Not just using us as a stepping stone job. Of course I want Cowher first like 98% of everyone else. But Johnson would be a great hire. I hate to see anyone lose a job but I live in the Charlotte area and the press especially the radio guys had a field day making fun of Amato’s statements after he was released. Just showed how bad his relationship with the media had become. I thought it was uncalled for but just showed we had no choice but to make a change. Cowher or Johnson both are good hires and the media loves a guy from the military schools. Couple names I am surprised not to be hearing is Bobby Ross, maybe he’s too old but won a NCAA championship at Tech. kicked ass at Maryland, and took the Chargers to the Super Bowl. or how about George O’Leary almost coach of the year rebuilding down in Florida last year and was good enough for Notre Dame to hire him.

Please research Paul Johnson before talking about his offense. Reference his stint as the OC at Hawaii…

  9. Graywolf1 11/28/2006 at 10:46 AM #

I keep hearing Tom O’Brien is wanting out of Boston…why is no one
mentioning him? As long as several canidates get reviewed and we get
the best fit for us, then I’m fine with it… I just don’t wanna take the hot name without a through review of all the options.

Way to go B-ball team, way to gut one out last night…

“Donnan works for ESPN on the weekends.”

In my book that’s enough to eliminate Donnan regardless of the trash talking he has done in the past about State beating Marshall.

I’m not sure I agree with the analogy of Navy’s offense in FB to the Princeton offense in BB.

The Princeton offense is rigid, somewhat low energy, lots of 3 pointers (high risk/reward).

I think the FB analogy to this might be ‘Beamer-Ball’ – conservative, good defense, rely on special teams and some offense to win.

Currently Navy is 31’st in DI in scoring (28 per game). I don’t think you will find a Princeton offense ranked this high in BB.

I’m not saying PJ is the man either. The questions would be recruiting (is recruiting at Navy really just convincing kids to go there instead of Army or Air Force?) and *teaching* discipline. The athletes at the service academies are going to be disciplined because of the military training…kids here won’t have that.

  12. RedTerror29 11/28/2006 at 10:56 AM #

Anybody have any examples of coaches from the service academies going on to success or failure at a BCS program?

Any word on where Amato might go? I don’t think us State fans have hard feelings towards him, it was just time to have change. IF Cowher became head coach, any chance Amato might be Defensive Coordinater? He is a great recruiter in FL, and at least understands defense. I don’t know, I like Chuck, he is a good guy, LOVES THE WOLFPACK, we should show him some love back. It’s not like he is a grad of some other school, he played football here! Let’s not forget that! I hope he stays in some capacity, he does deserve credit for getting us on the map. He did recruit Philip Rivers and Mario Williams. Without Amato we wouldn’t be having this discussion right now b/c we would have been used to having low goals set, but now we are thinking with high hopes, thanks to Chuck.

p.s. Any other Wolfpackers up here in upstate NY? Would like to get together to watch some games.

  14. Buddygreen 11/28/2006 at 11:03 AM #

    Coach K at Duke!

  15. Wolfman300 11/28/2006 at 11:04 AM #

I know this is BB, but didn’t Coack K come from a service acadamy?

  16. Mr O 11/28/2006 at 11:04 AM #

George Welsh at UVA came from Navy.

Actually, Herb’s Princeton offense was at least similar to the offenses of several teams in the NBA. But still the Princeton label hurt us in the eyes of some bigtime recruits.

Does any NFL team run an offense similar to Paul Johnson’s?

  17. Wolfman300 11/28/2006 at 11:05 AM #

    I believe O’Cain recruited Rivers.

  18. pack7483 11/28/2006 at 11:09 AM #

    he did

SFN: Not really. Joe Pate recruited Philip Rivers. When MOC was fired, Joe Pate was retained in the transition. Chuck then kept him on staff. When Chuck was hired, he and Joe immediately went to visit Philip before any other recruits.

  19. RedTerror29 11/28/2006 at 11:16 AM #

Coach K coached at Westpoint (and also played there). George Welsh was very successful (12 bowls in 19 years) at UVA after leaving Navy (did he keep the option?). Bill Parcells coached at Air Force for a year before leaving for the Giants. Ken Hatfield succeeded Holtz at Arkansas (55-17-1) then Ford at Clemson (32-13-1) after leaving Air Force. He also coached up until recently at Rice (55-78-1). He kept the triple option at Rice and I believe Arkansas and Clemson as well. Charlie Weatherbie has failed miserably at Louisiana-Monroe, but he did get fired from Navy.

MatSci – He was able to discipline kids at GaSouthern.

To me – I look at what he did to Jim Tressell – arguably one of the 2 most successful college coaches right now – when they played in the championship game in 1999 – GaSouthern blew them out of the water.

PJ has won whereever he’s been. I worry about his offense type too – especially w/ our current personell. However, I think he’s more likely than any candidate besides to Cowher to a) win consistently and b) stay a while. (No inside info on b – but he has stayed places at least 5 years.)

  21. Wolf-n-Atl 11/28/2006 at 11:19 AM #

I wish we would have retained Dixon as one of the coaches to help with the transition. He will have no trouble finding a new job. I was giddy when I found out he was going to be our receivers coach.

Paul Johnson worries me. I dont think that offense can be successfull at the highest level. Urban Meyer had to make drastic changes to his outlook in his first season. West Virginia appears to have a definite cap to their potential. I just think the speed in that exists in the BCS conferences is a natural kryptonite for the spread offense. And the speed in the NFL would destroy the spread. Hence, I believe we will see players that benefit in the spread (Alex Smith, Quincy Wilson, etc) struggle in the pros. (Does anyone think Pat White is an NFL QB?)

Now I defend the Princeton offense for the NBA. But the high post version doesnt work in college because of the zone defense. I think the spread might be basketball euivalent. Yeah, you’ll win some games. But it wont take you over the hump. That is usless you are willing to be flexible and use mutliple looks like Urban Meyer has realized. I’m fine with it as a tool against certain looks, but you cant be stubborn.

Will we ultimately be happy with West Virginia like success? I would think so now? But we werent happy with being a 7 seed every year in b-ball and rightly so. Will we get tired of losing to the top echelon (and fastest) teams? Would West Virginia even be “West Virginia” if VT and Miami were still in the Big East? Speed kills that offense. The ACC defenses are insanely fast. Yeah, our QB’s arent all that, but the defenses here are the fastest in the land bar-none.

I’d welcome Paul with open arms, but I’d much rather see a Pro Style offense installed here. The ceiling is unlimited there.

Who knows? Maybe PJ agrees with me. And that’s why he uses the spread at Navy. Maybe he knows it will work for the teams Navy plays. 8 wins at Navy is all they really want. I just dont like hypotheticals when it comes to a new hire.

I have read many posts over the past few weeks/months that contain a coaching wish list including Amato as DC. I really do not think this is realistic. I cannot think of any HC that has stepped down or been released that has stayed on with a program in a lesser capacity.

I heard a highlight from Cohwer’s noon PC, nothing mentioned about us in the snipet.

  24. gopack968 11/28/2006 at 1:20 PM #

Why assume that Johnson would keep the offense at an ACC school that he used at a service academy. Academy players are generally smaller and slower, though in some ways tougher, that BCS caliber talent. You implement an offense to take best advantage of the skill level that you have.

The problem that I had with Sendek’s offense was not that it did not work, but that it assumed inferior talent that required a special offense to hold the better teams at bay. That is a defeatist attitude – “we can’t really compete man to man so lets use a gimmick offensive scheme to keep our head above water.” That is why Sendek had to go when he did. He could never recruit and win at the highest level with that attitude. Having said that, after seeing Costner last night, one has to wonder what a Cedric Simmons, Costner, Brackman, etc., etc. team would have looked like even with Herb.

I would guess that any new NC State coach woill evaluate the available talent and implement an offensive scheme appropriate. In subsequent years, after his own recruits took over, he would adjust and upgrade the schemes to match what would theoretically should be better/different talent.
