Taking a Bow on Preseason & Sleepers

There is less than a month remaining inthe 2006 college football season we have a good feeling about the direction of the season and the strength/weakness of teams.

StateFans works very hard to try to stay in front of issues and items – sometimes we end up being wrong; often we end up looking pretty good. Today we thought that we would ask Jeff to ‘take a bow’ regarding two of his pre-season football pieces.

First, let’s focus on NC State. Sitting with a 3-6 record we know enough about the Wolfpack’s strengths and weaknesses to accurately comment on them. But on May 30th SFN told you what positions were the weakest heading into the season in this entry that includes some fantastic comments from our community.

In order of “most concern” to “least concern”, the following is a list of how I feel about the Wolfpack’s different positions:

(1) Offensive line
(2) Linebackers
(3) Wide receivers
(4) Quarterbacks
(5) Secondary
(6) Defensive Line
(7) Special Teams
(8) Running Backs

* No surprises at quarterback. At this point, no reason exists to expect Justin Burke (see feature story) to burn a redshirt this year. Daniel Evans has earned raved-reviews from those close to the program over the last two years and could see time if Stone struggles. But, the coaches were very complimentary of Marcus Stone during spring practice, so some reason exists to hope that Stone’s passing skills are improving.

* Looks like a moderately experienced and talented secondary that does not provide me a lot of concern right now. We’ll learn how much talent the group possesses sicne they will be tested more than last season if for not other reason that the defensive front won’t get as much pressure on opposing quarterbacks this year as last year.

* Don’t misunderstand me, the talent exodus that took place last year was painful to stomach. But, 90% of all college football teams would still trade their defensive tackles for DeMario Pressley and Tank Tyler. We are not as talented (or deep) as before, but don’t confuse that for being untalented.

* Because of the presence of Tyler and Pressley, I think that the premature loss of Stephen Tulloch will ultimately be the most impactful to our program this year. Tulloch was an All-ACC linebacker; a very important position where the Pack is thin and inexperienced. Had Tulloch stayed in school he would have made a mark on the NC State record books. He was THE BEST pure tackler on the squad, almost never failing to wrap up the ball carrier.

Secondly, on August 8th Jeff asked who was Looking for a College Football Sleeper? in this preseason entry.

This piece suggests that Louisville, Pittburgh, and Tennessee may surprise this year. I actually believe that these are all GREAT picks.

For the sake of being original, please allow me to throw out the names of Arkansas and Nebraska to go with Louisville, Pitt and Tennessee. I don’t think that the Razorbacks will beat USC or Auburn, but they could surprise with an unexpected 9 or 10 win season. Additionally, Bill Callahan has been at Nebraska long enough to gain some traction with his system. The recent issues at Oklahoma certainly do not hurt the situation.

As I am writing this, I have run across this great entry at Sunday Morning Quarterback titled, “Anatomy of an underdog. (I see that they have my Nebraska pick in their article and my Arkansas pick as an “other considered) It’s really a great piece.

Louisville, 8-0, #3 in the country
Arkansas, 8-1, #11 in the country, leads SEC West
Pittburgh, 6-3 (was 6-1)
Tennessee, 7-2, #13 in the country, second place in SEC East
Nebraska, 7-3, first place in Big 12 North

Damn good stuff.

Didn’t post it but I had QB as the first area of concern and the Oline as number two.m I figured if we were hurting in those two then the others didn’t matter.

I think as a group we pegged the Pack at 5-7 before the season. Starting to look like that will be the case, so a bow for all of us.

Also I would like to point out the individual that picked Wisconsin in the preseason sleeper post. Very nice picking. They were not even being considered for even “others receiving votes” during the preseason and are now 9-1 and ranked #16 and still climbing. So a bow for that pick as well.

The SFN board and the network of all us lunatics are continuously impressive in both regards to content and the amibltity to find/share information. It’s hard to even have a conversation with a non-lunatic state fan any more – they jsut don’t have enough imformation. So a bow for all the SFN hosters and posters.

    How true this is!

I agree 100%. My knowledge of Wolfpack sports now after moving to Georgia has been greater than when I lived in Raleigh and went to school there, and all the credit goes to this site and all the great information I get here every day. I went home to Raleigh this past weekend and tried to talk with them about our favorite team and found that I was the one with all the info and they couldn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. It was hard for me to avoid sounding like a know-it-all.

Thanks to the entire SFN community for giving me a little taste of home every day.

I liked the, already highlighted twice, comment also. When someone can look back and see that they hit ’em squarely on the head, months in advance, like Jeff did all the way around there, then they pretty much know their stuff.

    Very impressive!!! Good job Jeffrey!!!

I know I read that post earlier, but I can’t remember the “Daniel Evans has earned raved-reviews from those close to the program over the last two years and could see time if Stone struggles.” Boy I could have used that in some of my earlier battles with Wolfpack4ever. Shucks.

My Razorback co-worker loves Reggie Herring. He is still hopeful that Amato will get run off so Houston Nutt will have some place to go. Arkansas continues to get no respect. Everyone talks about Auburn as a BCS Championship team, but the Hogs must lose two conference games for the War Eagles to even make the SEC Championship game. They have UT and LSU left, but both are at home.

I said it the first time the sleeper picks were made, how are Louisville (began season highly ranked, Brohm & Bush as Heisman candidates) and Tennessee (preseason top 25, Cutcliffe & Fulmer reunited, recruiting classes that give you a chub, one (1) bad year) considered to be sleepers?

Here’s next years sleepers, West Virginia, USC, Ohio State and Texas.

Really good stuff. It’s nice to know that at least one of us knows what he is talking about.

We know that the game tonight will be broadcast on AM 850 and several other stations because WPTF will be broadcasting election coverage in the triangle.

Fine piece of “Internet squawk” that was. Amazing how you, JB, ignorant fan that you are, can put this together a month before the season.

“Some fans talk, and there’s the Internet squawk; but it’s not an issue with me.” — LEe Fowler

Just who are Lee’s customers, anyway?

SFN staff, truly the men, the myth, the legends, the tee shirts!

Just for the record, I did post that Tommy Bowden was the Chuck Amato of SC.
They always have high hopes in Death Valley but never quite get to where they need/want/expect to be.
Now they have 3 loses and a game with State coming up. While State has played like dirt they have also played well enough to win if the ball bounces right.
Could their recent problems carry over?
    Then USC.
3 loses and no trip to the ACC final in a year where the ‘horses’ are out of play is an ‘iffy’ season. 4 or 5 loses would have to be a huge disappointment.

If everyone will remember, i recall saying that the Zips were going to have a great year……. o wait, the only team worth a dern they beat was us……
and do yall remember after they kicked our butts chuck saying this “they(akron) are gonna beat alot of good teams this year, and surprise alot of folks… they will end up in a pretty good bowl this year.”

what was he talking about the zips are terrible. at least he didnt repeat everything he said. “critics? what critics. what critics?”

  13. packbackr04 11/07/2006 at 4:15 PM #

i know this isnt the place for this but….

could you imagine if gerron james played on a real football team? he is pretty good. Why dont we get him involved….

and have we even attempted a trick play since we ran like 17 in a row against FSU? just askin? trestmans imagination and vision for playcalling is amazing. simply amazing

Only if it was agreeable to everyone and I surely didn’t want to be pushy about it, but I think I remember, JUST ONCE, saying we that probably needed another men’s head basketball coach.

I guess we’re all pretty damn good prognosticators on this site. I know I am.

  15. packbackr04 11/07/2006 at 5:33 PM #

and this comin from Red… and red never toots his own horn

  16. packbackr04 11/07/2006 at 5:34 PM #

Being that we are all such remarkable prognosticators. And have abilites to delve way into the future… i remember saying we need a new AD, when will that happen?…………. well, we’re waiting?

  17. highstick 11/07/2006 at 5:38 PM #

Also setting the record straight about Clempson…. I said the dynasty was on a figment of their imagination and they would lose at least two more this year. Well, two losses later and the young Bowden dynasty has folded the tent.

Sure would like to see two more losses against the Pack and Cocks!
