No 50th win for NC State’s Chuck Amato today (Live Blog and reader comments here); and no magic number 24 for NC State’s Marc Trestman today. (Click here for key background on this topic).

Trestman’s offense laid a goose egg in the first half of Saturday’s game at Maryland and managed to generate some late points to ultimately score 13 offensive points against the ACC’s 11th ranked defense. Darrell Blackman scored a touchdown on a punt return to get the Wolfpack to 20.

After the game today, a thread on Pack Pride’s Premium board was appropriately titled, “Does any team hurt itself as much as NC State”. The answer has to be a resounding NO. No team in America has beaten themselves as much, as often, as consistently for as many years as NC State.

In none of the Wolfpack’s series with its ACC brethern are the results of the poor decisions, clock management and strategic blunders more evident than in Chuck Amato’s games vs Maryland. Amato drops to 2-4 against Ralph Friedgen and 2-5 against Maryland since taking over the NC State program.

State’s dreams of an ACC Atlantic Division Championship are all but over and the season has taken ANOTHER quick turn from exciting to painful. The Wolfpack is currently 3-4 on the season with the next three games against improving Virginia in addition to highly-ranked Georgia Tech and Clemson.

Make no mistake about it – Chuck Amato’s seat is getting hot again. State could easily be looking at a season that is played solely for the “excitement” of the final two games of the season against heated rivals UNC-CH and East Carolina.

    Trestman scored 13 points today. You cannot give him credit for the Blackmon TD.

    for that matter, take off every defensive or special teams TD since he has been here, and I’ll bet the numbers look REALLY ugly.

    Have we had 200 yards passinf in a game yet? This is class AAA material. What about some of the catches today. Blackman had a superior one, and barret made a nice grab. Can we just throw between 3 and 6 50/50 ball in the first half? You’ve got to play this conservative play callin crap when there is something to be conservative about. Bobby Zimmerman said “when you aint got nothing, you got nothing to lose”. We have a young impressinable, rebuilding defense, a kicker who all of a sudden has a hex on his right foot, a Polish response to a blitz kreig attack as far as pass blocking (sorry Poles, really brave and ineffective is what I mean). Yet the way I and many others here see it, the play calling resembles a team with everything to lose.

    To go with the conservative play-calling observation…when we had just gone down 20-0 and HAD to score, we had no problem marching down the field and getting a touchdown.

    We have GOT to start having this mentality from the first play of the game. All of the tools are there, Trestman (and Amato) are just unwilling to make use of them.

    All of that is summed up by one word: mediocrity. It is our destiny under this regime. We don’t and won’t totally suck, mind you – but we’ll be perennially mediocre. Is that OK? If not, it’s time to change. If so, root for someone else.

    Is it possible that Marc Trestman is a Tarheel?

    I know Amato is the coach, and I know he should take the main blame… BUT we have had other OCers that are not so scared(and have been able to get Chuck to go along with them) to go for it… once again I think we threw on first down ONE time that i remember in the first 25mins of the game, and that pass turned into the first interception. Our offense is so predictable, they even know when we are going to do something unpredictable… that is sad.

    The amount of money that has been put into this program over the last seven years (for which we should give CTC credit) should mean that mediocrity is NOT an option.

    There have been several situations in college and pro sports where one coach has taken a team to the brink (that is to say, “built a foundation) and another has been brought in to bring said team to the top of the mountain. For example, Gruden after Dungy in Tampa Bay, Roy Williams w/ Matt D’s players in CH, Nick Saban at LSU (SEC Champ in his second year), Pete Carroll (Orange bowl win his second year), etc. If the fanbase is okay with mid- to lower-level bowl appearances every year, why wouldn’t they be happy with having one for ONE year, and being in the upper-echelon for a second?

    the reason I am not upset b/c NC state is pretty much mediocre at all aspects of college sports. I learned NC State’s pecking order in the college sports world when we had to hire a basketball coach who had never coached in college and didn’t have a degree. Unless it is Bill Cowher, that isn’t going to change. I don’t care who you get to coach the team.

    Everyone acts like the money spent on facilities put us ahead of the ACC. I guess it caught us up with UVA, UNC, FSU, VT. Clemson has made a major investment. I am not sure about BC, GT, MD

    I’ve met Trestmen when he was hired for lunch with about 7 or 8 guys and was extrememly impressed with him. Now…I simply don’t think the guy has the passion for the college game. The college game has passed him by…there’s no imagination or creativity in his play calling and how he couldn’t see Evans is by far a better passer than Stone is beyond me.

    As far as Amato goes…get a clue…he’s a great coach and loyal Pack coach.

    SFN: Amato is a lot of great things. But NOBODY in college football has ever remotely confused him as a “great coach”.

    While I think we’ve lost in too many games by commiting stupid TO’s and not forcing TO’s enough over the past 3.5 seasons, I find it odd that a head coach gets blamed for that. We have a young team and our D has been built for the long term.

    SFN: At least you are consistent – it doesnt seem to matter which sport that it is…you consistently miss the fact that coaches are paid big bucks to be responsible for results as opposed to be blamed for results.

    We need a O Coor that has more creative instincts and Trestman should just be QB coach. Porte is a fine man and coach but these fumbles are getting old…He needs to figure why his players can’t hold on to the ball…it’s his job!

    You can’t win or even give a rats behind about TO’s if you are consistently last in the ACC in forcing them. Before that gift on special teams that landed in Derany’s lap I was beggining to wonder if TO’s were apart of the game of football, but not apart of Wolfpack football unless it meant giving the ball away. A good special by the ESPN crew being run over and over about Mike Hart of Michigan who was yet lose a fumble in college. lets get these guys up before 11:00 am some day and have ’em watch the special instead of playing video games, ’em I mean homework.

    Have to agree with SFN on this one. “The buck stops” with Chuck Amato (as Ms. Shelelelelelelee would say). He definitely has input on Trestman’s play-calling–and if he doesn’t during the games, he certainly has the ability to overrule him during the week when the staff is preparing a gameplan.

    On a different note, we all should probably know that there is SOMETHING wrong with Marc Trestman when you think about the fact that he has been the ONLY coordinator who can stand Chuck’s personality enough to stick around for 3 years!

    SFN: Trestman has only been in Raleigh for 1 and a half years.

    I’ve said all the stuff about conservation play calling; not scoring until we get behind; the HC and OC so many times. I’m not going to go there tonight.

    If anybody has a picture of an OT or RB making an effective block on a passing play today, please post it, because I missed it. It’s amazing that Daniel did as well as he did and survived without another concussion.

    I am moving, so I only saw 30-40 percent of the game. But I was not impressed. Hey, I guess we can say “at least we’re not last place FSU” when discussing our place in the Atlantic Division.

    But then I go back to the lost opportunity – in a year where FSU is weak enough to be LAST and we get 2 comeback wins to start 2-0…we immediately shoot ourselves in the foot and lose all momentum.

    It so frustrating in that we don’t win the games we should. We are THE woulda, coulda, shoulda team. Have some imagination in the offense. Teams know what we are going to do. I thought earlier that the only way Amato could mess up enough to get fired was to pull the O’cain NC/ECU choke to end the year. Now that seems a real possibility again like it did after the USM game.

    After the FSU game I said CTC would have to break his habit of losing to teams we should beat if we were to have a shot at the ACC Championship Game. He hasn’t. He likely never will. He’s had seven years. Next year should be his last unless there is a drastic improvement. (9+ wins)

    This year we have losses to Akron, Southern Miss, Wake Forest and Maryland

    a last second win over BC and a 3-loss FSU don’t make me feel a lot better about that (all I can say is, those were two pretty good wins)

    Chuck came in with a lot of hype and a lot of self-promotion, which only works, well, if it works — and this ain’t workin.

    where has our program gone if we are still losing to wake forest and maryland?

    if the balance is that we get a couple of good wins on the year and end up, say, 6-6 (bowl-ineligible), who’s happy with that?

    Chuck continues to prove that he cannot take our program any further, and I for one am not satisfied with that. I’ll credit Chuck Amato for setting the stage, but someone else has to come in and really take us forward

    With Oblinger and Foulup, it’s very unlikely anything will change until one or both is gone. They’re not strong leaders. Wish we still had MAF. Get used to mediocrity, we should put a big banner with it across the front of the Murphy center for future home games. It’s difficult not to like Chuck, but there’s that lack of intangible qualities that exist in a winning program that his ego/ personality seems to muck up. If Fowler’s around to choose the next football coach (heaven forbid), we might end up with Tom Reed called out of retirement. The storm clouds are on the horizon and the aluminum fan base appears to be ready to move from Chapel Hill to Raleigh.

    On the topic of beating ourselves–how many long gains did we have that were nullified by offensive holding penalties??
    (but, just coincidentally, the refs only see it on the big gains…)
