Major Imbalance @ N&O Today

The News & Observer today released another in their recent series of “Animation” Cartoons (supposedly) designed to spoof local coaches with their second spoof on NC State Head Football Coach, Chuck Amato. (You can grade Coach Amato by clicking here).

The newest Chuck Amato spoof is causing quite a lot of controversy and division of opinion on NC State message boards this afternoon. Other than saying that we think that the cartoon goes a bit overboard and is anything but flattering, we are going to refrain from commenting on the cartoon because one of the members of our author team (Jeff) plans on running an editorial on the topic in the coming days.

But, we can’t withold from sharing the following observations and complaint —

We just went to www.newsobserver.com and took a screengrab of the front page of the N&O’s website. We have carved useless stuff off the right hand side of the page and are left with the picture that we are sharing below.

In addition to the questionable Amato-cartoon that is prominently highlighted on the front page, take a look further down the page at the TWO “Special Features” that BOTH serve to paint UNC’s football program in a very attractive light.

Let’s recap a moment.

On the day before college football season begins in the Triangle…the geniuses at the News & Observer have chosen to run and feature on the front page of their website:

* A two-minute audio slideshow that could be run as a Carolina propoganda piece on the wonders of the “Old Well Walk” and coach John Bunting.

* A video of “Meet the Heels Day” that primarily focuses on a happy John Bunting holding a baby, signing a young fan’s shirt and happily interacting with fans.

* A made-up cartoon of extreme criticisms (like the representation that NFL draftees were “jumping ship”) that depicts Coach Amato as a full-fledged, unadulterated pimp riding in his corvette while new lyrics to the song “It’s hard out here for a pimp”.

Wow. Welcome back Frank Daniels, Claude Sitton and Mickey McCarthy.

Just grin and bear it. And then point and laugh after Rutgers ruins their little rivival before it begins.

The N&O has always had it out for Italian NCSU coaches, nothing new. Not even that funny, nothing to see here, move along.

  3. Jeff 09/01/2006 at 10:06 PM #

^ Nobody said that they didn’t see any humor in it.

  4. choppack1 09/02/2006 at 12:04 AM #

That’s pretty pathetic – I wonder how the N&O justifies this – are we supposed to take them as objective?

  5. tractor57 09/02/2006 at 3:17 AM #

Objective? No but with CTC’s over the top antics it’s not at all surprising he is a target once again.
Maybe it is just a little too close to the truth.

Fact is, at least our program and coach have some personality. What you can really say about UNC and Torbush other then the fact that they’re pretty much mediocre at best?

I’d say nationally, while we may be known as blowhards, at people know who NCSU is football-wise.

What’s funny about this is that Amato really was the Anti-Sendek. With Sendek, you knew he’d beat the crappy teams and lose to the good ones, with Amato- he can beat anyone and lose to anyone. At least Amato’s teams you can get you feeling good a couple times/year.

    Tractor,

So, dressing poorly and driving a corvette in his personal life is “over the top” and justifies becoming a target for personal criticism?

Your focus is on the content cartoon; my focus is on the imbalance of the content of the cartoon compared to other items being featured at the website and the peculiar timing of such.

It is inconsequential if the cartoon is “true” or not. (More on the cartoon later) when such “truths” are presented at the same time that the “truth” of how wonderful Carolina football is.

Regardless of its “truth”…it is very negative, critical, and attacking. If the paper wants to actually REPORT truths, then I say write and article about disgruntled assistants and players “jumping ship”. Don’t throw it into a cartoon without backing up such truths.

When the N&O highlights Bunting’s gray shirting practice of running off players (a practice that actually DOES have quotes to back it up) and highlighting all of the legal and drug issues within his program…then I will feel as though the N&O was looking to fund “truths” about both programs.

I thought it was brutal and quite a bit “over-the-line” for mainstream media. Yes, Blackwell (a NCSU alum) is very talented, but why run this hatchet job right before opening day?

It is the type of sophomoric crap one expects to see in a student paper or on one’s rival’s message board … not on a major metro newspaper’s website.

The previous ones on Chuck, John and K were not, as I recall, as nasty. Even if they run a similar piece on Bunting … why do either?

Hey N and O, this is really not your place. This is well beneath you. If Chuck Amato has players and coaches jumping ship, i.e., significantly more than other comparable programs, then report it so we can all benefit from your doing your job as a newspaper. A newspaper, remember, a paper with news in it? If after 6 years, you are making a bold pronouncement that NC State has a radically larger number of players and coaches leaving than other places, it is embarassing and shameful for you to make such an assertion this way. Have you lost all sense of journalistic balance?

Many of us at State watch decade in, decade out, the privileged coverage that UNC and Duke get, bourgeoisie that they are, regardless of the actual quality of their programs. I’m sure some clever youngish marketing guys you brought in from New York thought this would be cute. Ok, so, let me get his straight. Chevychevyski hugs and curses, (eek), Bunting has UNC fans uncomfortable because he does not win that many games (duh), Amato is a pimp who whores out his players to get a big stadium, big salary, all the while forcing coaches and players to jump ship? I know what a metaphor is, but gee, N and O, where is your mind? This is tacky and embarrassing. You owe NC State and Amato a public apology. Fat chance that will happen.

Oh, and I know this was probably some clever infotainment thing, just harmless fun. I don’t take it that way. If we’re going to do cartoons about coaches whoring, driving away personnel and players, let’s have some fun with this. It’s all so hilarious, let’s keep pushing the envelope, how about something on a former UNC guard’s alcoholism? How about Duke Lacrosse, you could do something with the video from Flashdance and have the players in the bathroom with the shower running and a single lightbulb dangling above…..the possibilities are endless. Oh wait, what am I thinking, that part of the Triangle fan base might not like it. Better soft pedal it where they’re concerned.

Lastly, this looks like clever upper management, connect with the younger crowd kind of bs. Having read writers such as Chip Alexander, Caulton Tudor and many others for years, how can we see them in the same light given the behavior of the corporation that issues their checks?

Not funny, N and O. Not funny.

^^ the messed up part is that is is’nt beneath them.

  11. Champs 09/02/2006 at 4:16 PM #

Why any Wolfpack fan would ever read that paper, go to their website, or consider them anything but a bunch of hacks is beyond me. I refuse to do any of these.

    Jeff,
Your comments are well taken here . I agree that the N&O is (and has been) a real stumbling block for NCSU athletics since Valvano. I take it as “over the top” (like CTC) and, of course, highly critical but we here have said the same things – maybe not in such an open forum as the N&O readership.
As for serious reporting I don’t expect any such from the N&O and never any truth when it comes to State so maybe that colors my judgement a bit.
I personally like CTC – the over the top stuff and all but I keep remembering the old Al Davis quote -“Just win, baby”. Winning covers a lot of sins (except in the eyese of the N&O).

  13. apexpacker 09/03/2006 at 12:46 AM #

Wrote a letter to the editor pointing out how such a negative attack on a coach and program on opening day completely undermines the credibility of their supposedly unbiased journalists. Wonder if we will ever see it it print?

  14. choppack1 09/03/2006 at 11:18 PM #

In today’s N&O, they actually wrote an article over how UNC’s loss to Rutger’s was a “positive”….I kid you not.

  15. redfred2 09/04/2006 at 12:54 PM #

The only way to shut up the N&O is to consistently beat UNC. Then they’ll start up about what a dirty program NC State is running. NCSU’s own weak administrators and ignorant fans will tuck their tails before giving away the athletic programs, and the cycle just keeps repeating itself, over and over again.

The only way to stop the cycle is to hire administrators who believe in NC State and won’t allow themselves to be pushed around like the bunch of pansies holding those positions now.

  16. gumbydammit 09/04/2006 at 7:34 PM #

choppack – I definitely viewed UNC’s loss to Rutgers as a positive.

PAPacker – NOTHING is beneath the N&O.

In their defense, the N&O does make an excellent birdcage liner or fish wrapper.

anyone who lived through the hatchet job that was carried out against coach v by claude sitton will not be suprised by this latest development—if the coach does not fit the prototype that brings comfort to the editorial staff of the n and o—AND—if they think they can sell some papers by assassinating some character and poking some good natured fun at some non-WASPS—then—it’s on now bubba—fortunately—the electronic world that exists in 2006 provides us with sources and insight beyond the time that coach v was drawn and quartered—ps—hail rutgers!

More of the same bias, negative, anti-N. C. STATE bs from the N&O as they attempt to prop up the sinking ship that is Tarheel f-ball.

Did you hear the PAC-man, Mark Packer, last week ask which fan base will be the first to jump off of the proverial bandwagon. I asked him to comment on the idea that at UNC Chapel Hill there is yet a f-ball bandwagon to jump off of, but maybe a measure of their fan support can be garnered from their frantic efforts to try and sale out more than two games (by running countless radio ads). A less than capacity crowd (12,000+ less) speaks volumes, as well as the booing and cup throwing at HC Bunting, man, recruits in attendance must have been thrilled with the fan support for the “New Blue”, now that’s singing the blues.

[…] It is certainly a LONG WAY from the N&O’s coverage on the Friday before college football LAST YEAR. On the same day that NC State was getting attractive national attention from Yahoo, the N&O was really fumbling their coverage in a very embarassing manner. I think that you will enjoy those flashbacks. […]
