Amato Justified in Recent Media Frustration

I have iTunes set up on my computer to download podcasts of which I am interested. One of my favorite podcasts is 850 The Buzz / 620 The Bull’s daily dose of the best interviews and conversations on their stations in a given day. These podcasts usually run anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour in length.

I don’t know if I need to do something to change my settings or make some other adjustment…but, I have not received a podcast download from 850 since July 25th. Does anyone our there have any insight or similar experiences?

One thing that I therefore missed was David Glenn’s interview of NC State Head Football Coach, Chuck Amato on Saturday. Glenn discusses the interview in this blog entry that is worth checking out. At the beginning of the interview, Coach answered a direct question from DG as follows:

“We have been to five bowls in six years, and our record is 4-1…The other four schools have been to five bowls combined in that same time frame, and their record is 1-4. That’s a fact. The most number of wins at the other four schools in the last six years is 30, and that’s an average of five a year. We’ve won 46, and that’s two shy of eight (victories) a year. I could go on and on. …

“Somebody told me down in Jacksonville, Fla., that I am the fourth-ranked coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference history in the number of wins after six years. Where we came from, and where we’re at? You write the story! I mean, some people won’t. You write the story. Write the things that are going on. Obviously, we know what we’re doing in recruiting. (Sometimes) we’re recruiting too good, because we have an underclassman (Mario Williams) go out and be the No. 1 player picked in America. It goes on and on and on and on.

I know that Coach Amato comes across as a little defensively aggressive in most of his interviews; and, I know that it rubs a lot of people the wrong way. It certainly doesn’t provide Coach any favors with media coverage when things aren’t going his way. However, I can understand Coach’s general frustration and don’t blame him for his mood with the media as of late.

After all…the media’s inaccuracies and inability focus on the truth are starting to have a negative impact on the NC State program as it is various members of the media – at a level that is infinitely more intense than Wolfpack fans – that have insisted on writing articles about Coach Amato being “on the hotseat” while simultaneously (inaccurately) criticizing Amato for foolish reasons.

Think about this for a moment.

There is little to no doubt that John Bunting will be fired as UNC-CH’s football coach after this season if he turns in a performance that is just an average year for him. How much publicity is this topic getting? While Chuck Amato has succeeded in becoming one of the most successful football coaches in NC State history and has succeeded in elevating our program far above all other programs in the area, the media has decided to swarm like (uneducated) vultures on CTC’s job security.

The result? UNC-CH is experiencing one of the best recruiting classes in their history while NC State is experiencing our second slight downturn in a row from the standards of CTC’s first four recruiting classes.

Reality check…NC State’s program has quickly become an NFL factory while UNC’s has experienced more player turnover and attrition than is close to explicable. The success that Chuck Amato has generated at NC State dwarfs the overall success of what John Bunting has generated at Carolina in only one fewer season.

Yet, the media makes a huge deal of our successful coach being on “the hotseat” while Carolina’s unsuccessful coach gets NO public pressure or scrutiny and thereby allowing him to mislead recruits into thinking that his job is safe. Wouldn’t you be a little ticked at the idiocy and blatant disregard for reality?

850 Interview
A poster on Pack Pride’s message board shared a fantastic summary of Glenn’s entire interview with Amato. The following is that report:

“DG started with a state of the program question at year 7. Coach replied with the facts:

When he came here the program was being compared to the other programs in the state of NC so where are we today. State is the only team to go to 5 bowls in the last 6 years, the other 4 teams have been to 5 bowls collectively. We are 4-1, those 4 are 1-4. We have 46 wins in 6 years or almost 8 wins/season average. The other 4 have 30 wins collectively. He remarked he hears about other stats from other people, but does not pay much attention to them. We have only been beaten badly twice in 6 years, but have beaten the perennial power in the league, FSU, 3 of 5. Our best game last year was against VT, but mistakes made the difference. He is proud he brought high expectations to the program and DG responded that is what makes it fun. Are we where Coach wants us to be, no, but we are getting there.

He never referenced UNC@CH by name or inference.

He repeated the story of how we could have competed for a NC the year we had the #1 defense in the country if that could have been Rivers redshirt senior season.

Are we a team that can compete nationally or a team with holes? We are team with holes. Four years ago the staff thought they would be very good this year because of the strength of the senior class (Mario, Tank, Tulloch) and a solid defensive backfield with only Hudson gone along with a highly recruited redshirt Jr at QB (Stone) and talent across the line, but as always every thing changes. So we will see how the kids fill the holes.

He is excited about the OL. There was chemistry formed in the spring. Don’t forget Holt played most of the game at VT 2 years ago at RT and we won.

Defensively, Willie Young is good and has good speed off the edge, but he has not played a college game yet. Is he Manny, no Manny was the best athlete he ever coached including Deion, but don’t forget the first time Manny played with his hand on the ground was his Jr year. Ray Brooks played great 2 seasons ago, but is rusty so we’ll see how he does. Again referenced how Young and others are similar to Mario and Manny during their first seasons in size and skills.

LB question with reference to Ray Michael playing and the holes to fill. Talked alot about Lowery and how Lowery had gotten a lot of PT the last 2 seasons as Hoyte was usually hurt the tail end of both seasons.

There were some comments about the running backs and playing freshmen, but I must have gottend distracted because I don’t remember his commments much other than how it took them 6 games last year to get smart enough to play Andre.

DG talked about how the common story on the recruiting trail is how family oriented the State program is. The recruits think is is cool they can call him Chuck. He commented the reference to family is what it is all about as players and coaches learned to work together. He is very proud of this family reputation he had built into the program. He has assigned seats for players during meetings with Seniors in front going to Freshmen in the back. Although this helps with attendance record keeping, it is also to help the players get to know each other daily. The coaches eat in the dining hall with the players to create a bond.

Jokingly he said you don’t call Coach Bowden by “Bobby”, but you do call Coach Paterno by “Joe”. Paterno is also Italian. He has told the players his Mom calls him Charles, but it is okay for them to call him Chuck in private, but if in public in front of others, they should call him Coach because people may view calling him Chuck as disrespectful.

DG finished with the question about his attire for the coming season. Coach said he will wear what people give him and doesn’t think much about it and why don’t the media comment on how other coaches dress on the sideline. However, he commented how it is about marketing. He has had people come up to him and say I know you from somewhere. So Coach will put on the shades and they respond, “oh yeah you the coach of NC STATE”. I took it he knows the comments about the shades and the shoes, but he views it as good PR and market recognition.”

Which is why I suspect Belly will NOT be fired even if he produces 5-6 type results – a Sendekian “look at the recruits coming in” argument will save him for one more season at least. My two cents.

I can’t imagine the Belly weathering ANOTHER bowl-less season…ESPECIALLY if State goes to another bowl.

How awesome would it be for Bunting’s seat to get hot during the season and State take/steal some of their “commitments” come February?

Don’t dismiss it as a very real possibility.

The good news is that there is no Steve Spurrier out there to potentially take the job.

  3. joe 08/08/2006 at 8:23 AM #

No Spurrier, but they might be able to hire someone that’s much better than Bunting. They could get one of the top up and coming guys from a smaller school such as the guy from Akron or even the guy from Navy.

Who cares about Carolina football? My sights are not on Carolina, but on perennial powerhouses VT, FSU (my favorite games of CTC’s era) and Miami.

I suspect that 5-6 with a win over State would be good enough to keep BTB around for a while longer.

BL Swagger is the first person I saw that speculated about the effect of increased admission standards at the UNC system schools would have on the FB programs at State and UNC. IIRC, his main two points were:

    – Both programs would struggle to move any higher than the “middle of the pack.”

    – Expectations from the adminstrations of both schools would drop because of the increased academic standards.

I would add one more caveat….neither school will accept a long losing streak against the other.

Another good article, SFN. I wish the tarholes would give belly boy a lifetime contract.

little to no chance Bunting gets fired for a 5-7 year IMO.

I agree but if this happens let’s hope the commitments we steal are a lot better than Clarence Gaddy & Jermicus Banks.

VaWolf82 – Great point about the UNC Systems new standards. I really don’t have a good feel about what effect this will have. I believe starting in 2007 the NCAA is increasing their standards that will lessen the difference between the NCAA & UNC System.

This probably doesn’t have anything to do with the new UNC System standards or anything else but I found this interesting nevertheless – Of our 5 true freshman wide receivers, the 3 from Florida are practicing with the team while the 2 from North Carolina are still waiting for NCAA clearance.

Thanks for the plug VaWolf …
I stick to that original assessment. I can’t scoop my upcoming ’06 PreVue column but we can now add UVa into that same dilemma. The “in-the-middle mediocrity” of 7-5 to 5-7 is salvaged by “beating our biggest rival”. Alas, for UVa that is much more difficuilt as their “at least we beat” is VaTech … ouch!

To the subject of this thread … Dave Glenn has now joined Caulton Tudor in that EVERYTHING he says is immediately labeled “against us and for THEM” by zealots in both UNC and NCSU camps. The glue-sniffing nitwits at TTP are in full lynch mob mode over Dave’s interview with Chuck.
Simply a reminder that no where else in America do bitter rivals share the same hometown media. Before you say LA … the good citizens of Greater Los Angeles have lives and identities well beyond their collegiate affiliations. Around the Triangle, “it’s just a little bit” more intense.

I think the Giant is probably correct in his assessment of the health of Bunting’s job, but at the same time, I sense that there are cracks in the PR monolith that is UNC — there have been some negative articles about JB in the Chapel Hill paper, a probing interview by UNC alum Glenn with Dick Baddour, etc. Clearly, the natives over there are starting to get restless.
Whether they remain that way probably will be dependant on this year’s results.

I have said it once and I’ll say it again – Amato is drawing a comparison against the other 4 teams in NC – which are the THREE WORST football programs in the ACC plus Napoleon complex laughingstock East Freaking Carolina.

The numbers that matter are 4-4, 3-5, and 3-5. Those are Amato’s ACC records in years 4, 5, and 6 of his tenure. Not good enough, and nobody should be made to feel it’s unreasonable to expect better.

Bunting doesn’t catch as much flack for the same reason why UNC will almost certainly never be a football power again in the post-Mack era – their fans just don’t care that much about football. As long as the basketball team is raking in the glory, the football coach will be safe with occasional bowl appearances and scattered upsets.

The NC State job might be harder to hold onto, but it’s also a job with a better ceiling – because the institutional support (including fanbase) is much better.

The academic excuse for our football program is BS. Historically the Big Four have not been football schools and that trend just continues. I believe that history has a way of repeating and historically we have never been much of a football school. When our greatest bowl achievement is the Gator Bowl that says it all.

A few years ago I thought we might reverse our tendency, but it appears to me, while we have great facilities, we lack the right people to capitalize on our new assets. Maybe things will change but I am skeptical at this moment.

  15. VaWolf82 08/08/2006 at 11:04 AM #

The academic excuse for our football program is BS.

The academic requirements currently in place severely restricts the number of athletes that can be recruited to any of the schools in the UNC system. This is an undeniable fact….whether you consider it a valid “excuse” or not is up to you.

The substantial differences between minimum NCAA course requirements and the course requirements for admission to any university in the UNC system is highlighted here (pay special attention to the extra science and math requirements):

in LA, USC and UCLA share the same media.

There are 14 million people in LA County which is about 13.5 million more than RDC- In LA you could go up to 10,000 people in a row that would know nothing and could care less about either of those teams before finding someone that was a college sports fan. You are more likely to find UCLA and USC fans in Fresno than in LA. Even the Dogers aren’t that big in the sense that the average person you meet on the street could care less about the team. This is why the NFL has been missing for over a decade now. LA is no sports town it is a stew of people from around the world that share nothing in common with one another.

OK – the academic thing would be an excuse if we could beat UNC and Wake. In the last 3 years – we are 2-4 vs. these teams. If you reverse that record, Amato’s job is fine. We can see how we do vs. UNC, Duke, UVa and Duke. If it’s a problem – I have a sneaking suspicion that powers that be will act in a way to resolve – espcially if UNC is negatively impacted.

Regarding Amato’s job status – I don’t think it’s fair to blame all of this on the media. In 2004 and preseason 2005, the mantra was “Why isn’t Amato on the hot seat, Sendek is on the hot seat for similar results.” This was, of course, wrongheaded on so many levels.

However, IMHO, it wasn’t the media who was booing lustily that Thursday night in Raleigh vs. Clemson. I believe that this loss was the 6th straight conference loss at home. In the process, we lost looking pathetic at home to UNC. After Wake Forest and the decision to put Davis back at QB after Stone had led us back, I was having a hard time justifying that decision and couldn’t believe what this staff was doing. Fortunately, we turned things around – and Chuck’s seat (very hot at the time IMHO) cooled down.

When talking about Chuck not being on the “hot seat” people are making a lot of assumptions. One of them is that Chuck will have at least a 3-5 season in conference and have a winning record overall. However, if we stumble out of the gates this year AND we lose to UNC AND Wake Forest – which is not out of the question – I think things will get quite ugly in Raleigh. Personally, I don’t think that it will happen – and I certainly hope it doesn’t. But before we criticize the media for acting like Amato’s on the “hot seat” – we should remember the Clemson and just how they got that idea.

Amato has a point in his frustration based on his overall “success” at State. If not for the 2 straight losses to UNC, I don’t think there ever would have been the “hot seat” talk. IMHO getting beat by a Bunting team is just too hard for many of us to swallow. I mean, I lived thru the consecutive loss seasons to Brown and Crum, but those 2 at least seemed to know what they were doing. It’s just damn embarrassing to lose to somebody who appears to be a blathering idiot.
Still this is the year when things could go bad really fast for Amato. A loss to App State at the beginning and we’re done and the “hot seat” is going to be nuclear. I know there are harder games on the schedule, but as I have been saying we have everything to lose against a pretty damn good 1AA program in our own state who has nothing to lose. Looking at the schedule 8-4 or better should be a given at this point in Amatos tenure and it isn’t.

USC left the ACC due to increased academic requirements (the old 800 vs 880 SAT score deal). It sure made one heck of a difference in their ability to compete now didn’t it?

For years UVA complained the two foreign language requirement held them back from competing in the ACC. But they changed coaches and focused on instate recruiting, particularly the tidewater area, and lo and behold they began to climb out of the hole. Later the two language requirement rule was relaxed but the change in coaching preceeded the academic changes.

If you LOOK for an excuse often you will conveniently find one, that’s my point.

  22. primacyone 08/08/2006 at 1:16 PM #

IF NCSU had beaton UNC the last two years – Bunting would have been gone. But somehow Bunting was able to beat NCSU and Miami in the same season.

Amato’s seat really did not get warm until the UNC lost last year. I do not blame Amato for the last two years and he is not anywhere near to being on a hot seat IMO. I blame Jay Davis almost exclussivly for the lack of W’s last year, but Jay will not be around to blame this year.

Amato needs to beat UNC this year – and Wake, and ECU, and App. State.

Didn’t we come to terms with a 5-6 season expectation. There’s four W’s right there. Amato could make himself look really good this season. Or really bad.

class of 74 – I’d only ask you to name one school that is consistently Top 25 w/ an excellent academic reputation that isn’t cutting corners. (For example, I think those UNC-Ch teams of the mid 90s were clear examples of a winning team, but not top notch students.)

I’ll give you Notre Dame, but I don’t think you can find another in Division 1A.

  24. class of 74 08/08/2006 at 2:13 PM #

Are you putting us in the Northwestern, Stanford, Vandy, Duke, ND group? I certainly would not. Our SAT grades and graduation rates would suggest we are not in that group.

Is it tough on those schools to compete, obviously yes it is. But to say we are in that group is incorrect. Our standards, while not the lowest, are not the highest either. We have set standards that the NCAA will likely adopt or nearly equal in the near future according to what I’ve read. It does us no good to admit athletes that can not graduate.
