“The Wolfpack will be good, just as it was a year ago. But good doesn’t always mean successful. A good Wolfpack team in ’04 finished 5-6 because the offensive line was hurt and lean and the quarterbacks were not good enough to overcome that one problem. The defense was good enough to win nine or 10 games, but defensive game grades count for nothing on the scoreboard. Dick Butkus, maybe the best defensive football player ever, once said he could stop touchdowns but not score them.
In football, if you don’t have a good quarterback, you usually don’t have a good record. The Wolfpack will go to August dealing with that uncomfortable reality.”
