Gottfried tabs Pierre as new assistant coach

h/t collegechalktalk.prestosports.com

Today Mark Gottfried officially introduced Butch Pierre as his new assistant coach. Pierre previously was on Travis Ford’s staff at Oklahoma State.

“I’ve known Butch for a long time and he’s regarded as one of college basketball’s premier recruiters, but he is also a great teacher of the game who has spent a number of years around winning programs,” said Gottfried. “He brings a wealth of experience in many areas that will help us tremendously, and I’m excited to have him join our program.”

Welcome to Wolfpack Nation, Butch!

Sounds like GT didn’t work out so the AD will eat his salary. Still don’t understand what went on.

It’s these kind of shenanigans that can bankrupt an athletic department or make something seem very amiss.

Seems like a temporary deal to me. I’m guessing that Lutz was effectively given his walking papers, either before or after the GT deal, but we are being nice until he finds a place to land.

Furthermore, I wonder if Joe Dooley isn’t looking at a position at NC State as a head-coach in waiting gig…

Settle down, peeps. I had breakfast this very morning with a former NCSU coach that warned the other 2 of us….

“Don’t bite what is coming out this morning. ” He would not elucidate, but then, again, he usually doesn’t.

How the hell do you figure that? gott isnt getting hired by anyone else and in the unlikely scenario that he is canned in the next 2 years I seriously doubt that someone on his staff would be promoted.

today was just another strange day in Wolfpack Athletics. Simply no reason to create a fictitious position for Lutz.

I think if Dooley is hired then its locked in stone that Gott is here for at least 2 more years.

So what happened with Georgia Tech?
And how does Loutz go from anchoring the staff to being dead weight?

    Interesting turn of events.

Lutz did not buy house or move to Raleigh with rest of staff.

Kept house in Charlotte area. His mom has advanced AZD. When his dad died, he had to arrange for her care. Great woman and beloved teacher.

He and wife bought pricey house in Raleigh in 2014.

He is a down to earth rural Catawba county lad. Real intelligence as well as good BB IQ. Typical hyper type A.

Since we seemed to suffer from lack of D this year and scouting/defense was assigned to Lutz….seems to be a little more than just a move.

Would be well qualified for Admin position or an AD job. He still seems to be a coach and competitor.

Time will tell. About time for Dooley announcement.

Maybe Dooley’s folks let cat out of bag early
    …and GT did not materialize.

Lutz does not seem like someone that would move out of NC. Too many ties here. He was an apartment dweller for 4 years after Charlotte. Can’t see him doing that gig again.

No inside info… Just some facts and observations from following Lutz’s career and also being from Catawba county….

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

I almost think it’s more that we figured out how bad it would look for Lutz to go to a lesser ACC rival (and I am sure he would rather stay in Raleigh than move to Atlanta from a personal standpoint, though I’m surprised he’d be willing to leave coaching).

I’m sure we would/will have to give Dooley a 2-year contract, but that doesn’t mean MG is safe for two years, just means more dead money on the pile. But we have to do SOMETHING to recruit enough bodies to have a team for next season (and even more so for 2017-18).

Yeah we currently have 7 maybe 8 players for 16-17 and only three for 17-18. So you are right, someone needs to do something.

Looks like NC State initiated this coaching staff change more than Lutz. We seemingly have the next addition lined up and want them to get started. GT either isn’t hiring Lutz or there’s something going on with the hiring process.

I don’t think Lutz will be in this position long. I’m not sure if we owe him a buy out, but if we do he he may as well continue to help with the program if we’re going to pay it. If so, that’s a wise move.

I just can’t see him in this role long term though. I’d be very surprised if he was in this role more than a year from now. My guess is that he’ll end up coaching elsewhere.

As for the duration of a next assistant’s contract, I think Gott’s here for as long as Yow is anyways. The assistant contracts aren’t changing that. Hopefully these changes fix what ails us.

I still think the best thing that happened to NC State this offseason was Archie signing an extension at Dayton. Hopefully it keeps him out of play until Yow retires.

Agree with Ryebread 100%, good post. Not sure Yow could get us in a better position than we are in already with a new coaching search. Although sometimes blind luck can work out there too. I’d be tickled if we were lucky enough to somehow get Archie a shot at this thing though.

His new administrative duties with the basketball program will include assistance with the personal and academic development, housing arrangements, planning and logistics associated with the team’s foreign tour and other special projects.

Are they going to finally set up an illicit academic system for players? Better late than never.

Let’s hire Geno Auriemma for that open spot.

I know what twitter is, but does this mean pundits, fans, or “sources”?

Probably would not be the best recruiter, just a hunch. I’d rather hire him for Lutz’s spot.

I have absolutely no reason/sources to think this, but it occurred to me today…

Possible that Lutz is being “placed” in this position to eventually “grow into” the AD chair in a few years? If the man wanted to coach, he could at some level I’d think. If he doesn’t, I can’t imagine a long term “double secret probation” assistant to the assistant of the assistant gig is gonna satisfy him professionally in the long term.

I suppose time will tell. He might very well make a helluva AD, though…once he learns the ropes.

Dooley staying put. This is an absolute train wreck in slow motion folks. Hope everyone enjoys carnage. cue the local media about how we ran off Lutz
