Road Trip to Winston-Salem 2Nite

When Wolfpack Basketball (10-5, 0-2) rolls into Winston-Salem tonight for a road tilt against the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest (9-5, 0-2), both teams will be looking to avoid an 0-3 start to league play.

In spite of two straight setbacks to begin ACC play, Mark Gottfried’s first 0-2 league start as head coach at NC State, he says he likes his team and that they’re “not far off”.

Despite their own 0-2 start, Wake has been impressive so far. They’re coming off a loss to Duke in which they were within 2 with less than 10 mins to play before Duke pulled away late. Prior to that, Danny’s Deacs went on the road and pushed Louisville to the limit before falling in the last two minutes.

Needless to say, this one is a must win for both clubs.

Tip time is 8pm.
TV is ESPNU

In honor of Lo Brown getting back to The Association, here’s some State/Wake highlights worth remembering…

Do we need a pool on the first acc win

If it’s not Wednesday night against FSU (at home), then either 1/27 against GT or 2/1 @ FSU. Basically, if we don’t beat the Noles, we are staring at an 0-7 start. There is absolutely no way this team could rebound from that kind of start as there are many more tough games down the road. The only team I can say is worse than us is BC, and we don’t get the Eagles until March.

The highlight of the season will be Cat winning POY and going in the first round

His chances of getting POY decrease with every loss, and there’s going to be a bunch more.

I’m sure Gott isn’t in denial. He’s always been more of the positive type that keeps losses in perspective (at least in the media) and I think that is a good thing. What do you expect him to say? “I screwed up big time with this roster and we just don’t have the horses?” That’s a recipe for the team mailing it in the rest of the season. The only answer is to tell them they’re close and need to dig a little deeper, and hope that a player or two get hot.

I don’t think Cat is winning POTY. It is very tough to do, much less on a bottom dweller. He may not even make first team All-ACC due to the love for Paige (and how they’ll finish) and the great assist:TO ratio that the Pitt PG has and how much they’ve over achieved (if these two trends were to continue). Cat will be viewed as a high margin shooter on a bad team. I do think he’s playing his way into a first round pick and guaranteed money. He has some intangibles you can’t teach and every NBA team needs a lightning quick player at the point that can also score and create his own shot.

Rye, I don’t expect or would want Gott to rip his team in the media. It’s fine to say we are close, just a few plays away, etc. And of course love the effort. Of course I don’t expect him to criticize his roster management.

But to suggest this is a good team is complete and total BS, and he knows it. And he knows what is coming up on the schedule. How is he going to defend “good team” when we are 1-6 or 0-7? Makes no sense.

    Coachspeak is coachspeak.

Probability distribution being what it is, we will surely win 4-5 games minimum even if rarely favored. And no, it won’t represent a turnaround when we start getting those wins, it will just be the steady, inevitable march of math.

Before last night I would have agreed with you. However I am not seeing 4-5 wins this season. Our offense is just non-existent. No points from ANya? What the hell gives? Something is really off with this team. Not sure I can say if its the chemistry just yet but something is woefully off here.

Also another game where Cat just does it all. He was getting hammered again all game and picking himself up off the floor. Without some relief or help there is no way he is going to be able to play at that level in the meat of the ACC schedule.

I will await the incoming here but Gott is not a good program manager as evidenced in Alabama and now Raleigh. Proof is in the pudding as they say.

I truly wonder if Yow will can him next season if he lays another turd? Because I dont see any way in hades that we are going to be better next year giving our annual off season purge.

    Well, it’s pretty easy.

Gott has said in the past that he thinks giving a scholarship to the wrong player is more detrimental that just not using it.

Then, you decide to go all in on ’16, have some unexpected attrition, a key injury, and BAM, you’re playing seven guys deep.
