    First time Gott has criticized the team for lack of effort (in the first half) this year. He was not happy. He criticized Anya and Freeman’s rebounding.

    He also put the 1-7 mark on them and said they need to decide what they are going to do about it.

    He’s starting to get pissed. Hope the team is as well, but I have my doubts.

    How do you give up 90 freaking points to Georgia Tech? Still think that defense has improved? Nope.

    It HAD improved. Obviously, with the last 3 halves of basketball, it has backslid tremendously.

    Thus, Abu’s offensive outburst is effectively meaningless.

    Kindof a catch 22 actually. While its nice to see, I think it is giving him confidence and is clearly frustrating him that nobody else outside of Cat is coming to play. I just dont see him sticking around for the crap show next year.

    Glad I had a long late business dinner last night. Experts are going to look back on the win at Pitt as one of the greatest outliers of the entire CBB season. It will end up saving us the embarrassment of a winless conference season.

    It appeared we were improving – the optimist in me was thinking perhaps we’d have a couple of wins to be proud of in the second half of the season – but I think we have been exposed. GT played physical and we folded.
    There were two remaining games that we should have expected to win, and we lost this one badly. It really was much worse than the final 7 points indicated.

    Gott, put this season on cruise control and go recruit like your job depends on it.

    As I noted in the game thread, I think the physical fatigue of the short bench is synching up with the mental grind of having nothing to play for (outside of the three who has pro aspirations, namely Cat, Abu, KH). There IS NO ENDGAME this season, and they all know it. Not even the NIT.

    we are one fluky game away from being winless in the ACC halfway through the conference slate. Its an embarassment and for Gott to hang it on the players is shameful. Its not all their fault. Sure the effort isnt there, but what do they have to play for? The problem is talent and depth. Both of which are the problems of the Head Coach. These kids, outside of Cat (and Abu recently), just arent very good and there is no bench. Ive been a fan of Gotts but I am really at a loss as to how he can explain this. At my job, its a “what have you done for me lately” type of thing… and Gott sure aint done much for me lately.

    I try stay positive by considering as some say injury and early departure has more to say bout this years lack of success more than Gott but after last nite its getting hard. I agree with this statement, “the physical fatigue of the short bench is synching up with the mental grind of having nothing to play for”. And this is on Gott.
    Its obvious this season has gone down the crapper quicker than Monday nites burrito. For the life of me I can’t understand why Gott is not trying different line ups or players. Does he not see the fatigue issue of only playing same guys? Last nite Gott went to the extend the game by fouling plan, and it almost worked. But if you got 2 of your main rotation guys in foul trouble, aka Martin A, then why is he out there fouling out? Is Dana Kirk so bad he is not even capable of hitting the floor long enough to commit a foul?
    This building tidal wave of despair will be a tsunami next season with departure of Cat and Abu. Who else will be adding their name to the list? I just don’t see nothing good happening next season or beyond without some major changes both in staff and philosophy.

    ^ Yeah, I would start playing Kirk and Li’l Corch just to spread the misery/suck around, if nothing else. Allows you to pull dudes out when the effort gets to “Twin A in the first half” level, too.

    Are they not ready/ACC caliber players? WHO F-ING CARES??

    I hate to say this, but look forward to next year. You replace Cat with DSJ and that is it. Get ready for rinse and repeat. What is worse, you may actually loose one more to transfer or whatever….so sad.

    Dorn and Henderson go into the rotation as well, so no forwards play guard. That’s pretty important.

    But without recruiting another stud lowpost scorer, and more depth, still a flawed sqad in my view.

    While this season is clearly a nightmare for the fans, I can only imagine the nightmare it is in the locker room. BJ has clearly checked out. I refuse to think Lennard has checked out. He’s not that type of player. Gottfried’s history at Alabama and here is once he’s lost a player, they’re gone. This is ugly right now, and I think it’s going to get a lot uglier.

    ^ That’s what I don’t get. If he has job security for the next year or two, why does it seem he’s coaching for his life and not using the seldom used bench players for in game teaching moments and to send messages?

    Before last night, there was probably still some hope for respectability. Plus the final record is still a blot on his coaching resume so it’s a big deal TO HIM whether we finish 2-16 vs. 5-13ish.

    Might change after last night. Sounds like he’s kind of had it.

    From a macro standpoint, it IS essential that NC State starts putting the pieces in place so next season can be fairly and critically evaluated (as I discussed a few weeks ago). It should be determinative for the future of the program.

    Does Gott and his crew recruit big men? The words “another” stud down low was used. When have we had a stud??? We have three duds and that does rhyme so maybe that’s where the confusion lies.

    This is year 3 for Lennard and Anya. They are a mirror image of who they were 2 years ago. That’s on them for not putting in the work and that’s on the coaches for not holding them accountable. I mentioned after the Wake game that we need to play our bench as well. At this point, what does it hurt?

    ^ Because he’s never used much bench, whether he had much of one or not. He certainly isn’t going to use in-game situations to teach. Why start now?

    After meeting the guy a few years ago outside an official university event, I knew he just didn’t get how big college basketball is in this area. Not really. Doesn’t get that the fanbase is relatively knowledgeable compared with Tuscaloosa. The UCLA connection gives him some idea, but LA isn’t Raleigh. He doesn’t know how ugly it’s going to get. Hanging your hat on the last 4 years doesn’t cut it, not when it looks like this season is an utter disaster, and the prior products were partially attributable to inherited recruits and players. Who’s really buying that a transfer and early departure ruined the season? And those were a big surprise? Really.

    My view of his tenure follows:

    Year 1 – Gottfried inherited a talented but young and underachieving bunch under Lowe. In Howell, a forward with great hands, a big body, who could score and rebound; a super athletic forward who could jump out of the gym in Leslie; an elite shooter in Wood; a SR guard in Williams who was a coaches son, a lockdown defender (the best we’ve had shy of Cat) who could guard a 2 or 3, and rebounded well; and a big PG who made few mistakes. Of course, there were weaknesses. Give Gottfried credit for molding them and for bringing in a backup PG. Best defensive team he had. Really improved over the second half of ACC play.

    Year 2 – Gottfried secured committments from some coveted players. Going into the season we were top 10. That wasn’t an unreal expectation. The biggest loss was Williams, and Painter as a distant second. Big disappointment of a year. Defensively, we were a nightmare. Poor bench management and team management by Gottfried. Were we top 10? Probably not. Should we have at least been top-25? Definitely. Warren was probably underutilized given how efficient he was.

    Year 3 – This was probably Gott’s best coaching job, imo. Lost a lot from Year 2. We’ve been hurting at the 2G spot almost every year. Very one-dimensional at that spot, and he’s not shown the ability to get anyone shy of Lacy.

    Year 4 – Nice run to Sweet 16 but still underachieved imo due to the same constants–poor defense, poor shot selection at times; inadequate depth at key spots on the floor, mainly at guard. Lacy wasn’t an effective PG backup.

    Year 5 – Disaster. No depth. Not quality depth, just simply no depth. Now mix that with the other constants–poor development of players, poor fundamentals on the defensive end, and throw in an injury, and walla…you get a turd and ton of excuses

    I don’t think Gott is going anywhere, either. Just like the Wolfpack.

    The best thing about last night’s game was the meal we had in the PNC Arena Club Restaurant. Great vittles! However, game night could be an even more pleasant experience if the restaurant would switch its operating hours from 2 hours prior to gametime to the 2 hours during the game.

    Might help business.

    Think about it. Most talented team, best team, is Year 1. I’m not talking relative to peers, just the ole’ eye test. Year 1. And we’ve pretty much had depth issues at at least a few positions each year, but they’ve gotten worse, not better. Not since Year 1 and 2 have we had as much quality depth.
