(8) State vs. (4) Louisville TV: Friday 7:37pm, TBS

(4) Louisville held off (5) Northern Iowa late last night in the Second Round Round of 32, 66-53.

State will get a Sweet 16 rematch against the team it beat 74-65 on the road in February — a team that looked dangerous last night, finally scoring with ease against Northern Iowa, shooting 45.8% from the floor and 45.5% behind the arc.

The exciting part for State fans is that the Pack hasn’t played to its potential since the Pittsburgh game.

Gottfried will be on Mike & Mike at 9:30 for anyone interested / able to listen/see.

UNI was touted as one of the best defensive teams in the nation. Stat gods also said they were. Panthers were very clearly over-matched last night. Credit to Louisville. I put that one more in the column of whipping an over-matched opponent.

Also, I see in the twitter feed someone claimed that M. Greenberg picked State to win the championship. Unfortunately not true, he was just repeating the facts about beating Duke, Cheats, and a # 1 seed in the same season.

Jay Bilas swiped us away in about 3 seconds after taking the time to mention players from all the other 16 teams without mentioning one of our kids. “Michigan State and Louisville is gonna be a great game”….Jay Bilas

Michigan State has already been awarded the East Regional by the pundits. We can clearly play with anybody who will be in Syracuse this weekend. If Good State shows up, we can make it to The Annapolis.

The Obama nonsense didn’t even come up. Thank God. Time for that crap to be put to bed.

I’m glad we are not getting accolades. I’d rather see us dissed than get positive press that may go to our heads. Give us motivation to play harder any day of the week. Fly right under that radar to the elite 8.
    Survive and advance.

Both are essentially toss-up games, but I do think that Okie and NC State should be very slight favorites.

Agreed. This is just standard noise coming from Dukeys like Jay Bilas, Seth Davis and Mike Gminski.

Michigan State is the safe pick for the pundits.

I was watching this morning and I think (Seth)Greenburg meant Michigan State when commenting about who will make it.

Well, we all know Bilas can eat a…

We can beat L’ville (again). I think this time out, we need to focus on shutting down or neutralizing Quinn Snyder and Harrell. Snyder’s been playing well as of late, but he’s still a freshman, right? Make him turn the ball over and take contested shots. And do whatever we can to slow down Harrell and Rozier. The X-factor for us would be Ralston. If he has a good night shooting, we continue playing excellent defense, and the rest of the guys play like they did against Nova, we’ll be playing on Sunday.

If we can successfully shoot our wad, we gonna win. Who cares if we come out flaccid vs. Okl/MSU? I want an elite 8 now! Worry about Sunday on Sunday. Now is the time for Ralston to make some effing shots. If he can see the ball go through the net, lane will open up. Feed post first few possesions. I’m ready.

Very much agree. I like our chances this weekend-good matchups that favor the Pack.

I’m thrilled that the talking heads are all talking about Pitino and Izzo. Absolutely thrilled.

Exactly, let mouths keep talking. There’s not a team left in the EAST the pack can’t handle. I thought the Pack was double digits better then Nova.

Getting ahead of myself here but I’ll tell you what else. If I was Duke, would not want to see the Pack after that 40 point beat down in the ACC tourney. That will not happen again this year, worst of that match up is out of the way. God willing, if we see them again they would not get through without a helluva dog fight. They would likely get both barrels.

Yes, national media please continue ignoring State. Here’s hoping the calls are at least consistent Friday night and the rest of the tournament.

I have watched both games twice now. Second half, LSU guard drives to the top of the lane and dribbles the ball off the heel of his shoe but continues dribble. 3-4 step process. Is that not a travel? Jesus, even the announcer said he got away with a walk.

Cat’s shot is descending but the announcer says the ball had not hit the glass yet. Does that matter when a descending, pre-glass ball is over the rim? Or does the rule book state the shot begins after the glass on a bank shot There was another clear cut case of goal tending that didn’t hurt us as Freeman went on to score and missed the and one ft.

What was the call in the second half of the Nova game where their big got fouled (not called) and then got the ball back, scored and then there was a foul called. I have watched that play over and over. He goes back up uncontested.

We won so it doesn’t matter but damn those particular calls or no calls were baffling. They called Anya on a clear goal tend so I guess the refs technically know what constitutes a goal tend.

In any event, State is shedding that “soft” label. Teams are going to miss bunnies with Anya, Freeman, Washington and Abu out on trench patrol.

Agree with the masses here. I hope the national media disses the hell out of State for the next week. I was hoping that L’ville would lose last night because I almost hate that we beat them a month ago. Even though we really needed that win then.

Bottom line to me, if Turner comes out of his ever-lasting funk, we win this without too much trouble. Bring on Cat 2.0, Monster Abu, Lacey and dare I say Dez Lee, and there is no team left in the East bracket we can’t beat.

However… I’m not liking Pitino having a week to prepare for a team that bested him in their previous matchup.

Also, I think they’ve completed their adjustment from losing Jones.

If I’m being honest, Pitino’s adjustments get the nod over State’s ability to anticipate his adjustments and scheme counters.

    See last Duke game.

Then there’s those good Pack vs bad Pack between the ears issues.

If the staff and players have the same concerns, I like our chances. If they don’t, I don’t.

Exactly what I thought this morning. This may be where that Duke blowout in the ACCT actually helps us.

^100% agree with tjfoose. If this team and staff think we can simply show up and do what we did in Game 1 versus Pitino and Co, I think we’re in trouble. See Duke.

Louisville hasn’t been a good offensive team, with or without Jones, but they’re solid defensively. Two keys for us are the same. Good shot selection and solid defensive effort. Been fairly good limiting turnovers, but anything that lets them get out into transition, where they can score easier, helps their offense. Blackshear and Harrell don’t scare me. Key matchups are Cat vs. Rozier and Pitino vs. Gottfried. Better be prepared for some more matchup zone boys.

Yeah the call when Freeman blocks Pinkston’s shot and then it bounces off of Abu back to Pinkston was brutal. Fine, they got a fortunate bounce and Pinkston scored … but in a scene reminiscent of ’89 State-Georgetown, the ref at half court comes steaming in with a non-existent foul call. It never ceases to amaze me how one blows their whistle off of assuming what happened without actually seeing what happened. Just why? Insanity.

There was also a call in the UVa-Sparty game yesterday that was a call usually reserved for the Blues. Virginia was putting together a mini-rally and Atkins made a completely clean block on an MSU player and it was going to be a clear run-out for UVa. Before Atkins even blocked the ball, the ref on the baseline blew his whistle. Just amazing. It was an awful call, but the ref had to follow through with it after blowing his whistle from anticipating what would happen. My God, we better not get that guy this weekend. We block so many shots I can’t imagine how many of our guys would foul out off of clean plays.

Also, I think they’ve completed their adjustment from losing Jones.

If I’m being honest, Pitino’s adjustments get the nod over State’s ability to anticipate his adjustments and scheme counters.

^I agree. Even though it’s anti-Pitino, I can’t help but to think State will see some variant match-up zone or a half-court double on Barber. Barber basically won the game in Louisville … they will account for him with more than one wrinkle. Other guys are really going to have to step up. Outlet game is going to be a huge factor – there’s going to be more on Lacey’s shoulders this time around. As others have alluded to, we need to see a couple of 7-11 games out of Ralston this weekend. I also expect to see a continued surge of Dez Lee minutes. Stick him on Rozier and see how easy he penetrates then … I’m fine w/ Lacey/Ralston on Blackshear. Don’t fall victim to the pick-and-roll with Harrell.

If we can get and keep them in the half-court and shooting uncomfortable jumpers and then utilize release valves we might be ok.

Re: Bilas – I can’t blame him for picking Louisville … But if he just outright dismissed NC State then that’s disingenuous. And yep, Bilas loves some Bilas 🙂 . Imo, he doesn’t come across as smug, elitist, or condescending as he used too but he’s still an unrepentant know-it-all.

Pitino will attack Cat when they have the ball early and often, and they’ll definitely look to trap him some, get the ball out of his hands when we have it. I do think Pitino was left scratching his head during the first matchup, perplexed and caught off guard more than just a little, so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with. Louisville doesn’t have near the firepower on offense that Duke has, so I don’t expect to get run over in any scenario. Their quality depth is also down. They can’t exactly come at you in waves as in years past.

Bilas is almost unbearable to me at this point. He has become a shrill for the whole athlete’s rights movement which should come with nuanced commentary and he gives none. He also calls each possesion during a game like he’s commenting on war zone atrocities. Where’s the fun? Why so serious Jaybill? Don’t like his tone. Its okay to be excited and I like that, but he sounds so dang ominous during some perceived (by him) key point in the game. Where have you gone Gus Johnson?????

We’ve played 35 games so far, and I’ve probably been wrong something like 35 times. So I’m going with Louisville all the way, and you can thank me later.
