^ Completely fair. All his guys, and it’s Year Five.

He’s fortunate to get that, given how badly this season has gone. But he really should get credit for doing some good to very good work the first three seasons. I will be fair. But I am very, VERY worried now.

I think it’s fair as well. I’m just baffled at the lack of progress from the big guys. You can’t look at the progress this staff made with Howell and Calvin and conclude that they flat can’t develop big guys. They clearly know something. I also don’t think this is an enormously talented group by ACC standards, but I have always maintained that talent level is the most important part of a college coach’s job duties. It will cover up a lot of shortcomings in other areas.

I have yet to come up with anything new to add about the game. State had a shot – literally – and they didn’t execute. Rinse, repeat. Regarding Gott, I get the distinct impression that he would like to be somewhere else. That’s all I gott.

We lost the game because we play undisciplined and took way too many contested shots early in the shot clock.

    ^This times a million.

I’d add, even if a shot is not ‘contested’ doesn’t necessarily make it a good shot. Last night was not a defensive or even rebounding failure. Better shot selection and taking full advantage of each and every possession and we’re likely talking about a much needed victory today.

A bad shot is a bad shot is a bad shot.

I think the flagrant foul was with between 2 and 3 minutes remaining.

We lost the game because we play undisciplined and took way too many contested shots early in the shot clock. Really curious what the time of possession was last night, but UVA just works the ball around so well trying to get open looks (which they did get, they just couldn’t hit them). Only when they are unable to get an open look and the shot clock is running down do they take contested jump shots.

Is it just me or does Anya just look lost when he’s on the floor. Just standing around acting like he wants to set a pick for someone, but doesn’t know where he should be on the floor. I can remember more than once he would look at one of his teammates, palms turned up with a “where am I supposed to be; what am I supposed to do” look on his face. He also got lost a few times on defense and gave up uncontested shots or layups.

I think Anya has checked out, has been for several games now. I think this is the tell tale sign he is exiting stage left.

I didn’t watch the game, but the box score I looked at said we got clobbered on the glass. Shot selection is a problem, but it looks like one of several things we could improve on to win games like this.

Certainly an interesting way of looking at things, he certainly has left some baggage here in Raleigh. A fresh start may be on his mind. But who is going to hire him away?

Thanks colapack for the time reference.

I’ve gone through the replay on WatchESPN several times now, and I believe that the right call was made on the floor, i.e., no call. Contact was incidental. Martin did lower his arm, but at realtime speed, that’s just self-preservation reflex. You can see his whole body trying to pull away from Nolte, while Nolte throws his arms out and forward in classic “flop” mode.

At the end of the day, it’s a great play by Nolte, albeit with a part of the rules that I despise. Given our history with bad calls, I can’t believe our opponents don’t do this crap more often. I can’t believe the officials fell for it, especially with the video right in front of them.

Both fouls on Brogden were legit, and State had momentum (previous play was steal and dunk), cutting the once 7-point lead to 1. Bennett used the time wasted by the officials to draw up the next play (which he wouldn’t have gotten unless he called a TO). Critical, critical call that completely changed the game momentum.

Having said that, there were other opportunities for State to win the game, and some poor execution also cost some opportunities. But in the end, in a game like this, a single call can make a big difference, and it did. No, it didn’t single-handedly cost the game, but it’s silly to say it didn’t affect the game. We continue to see these controversial decisions go the other way. Put another way, there were opportunities for the State players to not screw up their chance, and at least one unnecessary opportunity for the official to not screw up the chance.

When was the last time there was a critical and controversial call or non-call in the last 10 min of a close game that benefitted State?

I think he could get another decent coaching job but not at the money he wants. Besides who would even think about his buyout at this point? Only the big schools looking to make a move could afford it and there isn’t any big schools with that kind of money looking for GOTT. So….even if he wants out it is going to be two years at least if it’s his choice for financial reasons. He can stay and get paid top dollar for a few more years if DY can’t afford the $$$ to pony up for an early departure after next year.

We have made a career out of this process in Raleigh so we all know the drill. Wait and hope for the best even if that means We miss an awesome potential coach during the waiting time.

We will see transfers after this season and maybe even an assistant or two burning the road. There will be some movement in the offseason if I was a betting man. Oh well…looks like it’s another wait and see season next year. Good thing is that’s what we are use to every season anymore. The life of a Wolfpack fan. The cycle never ends.

    Definitely.

I suspect rebounding (among other things) will be an issue for the remainder of the games this season. Shot selection should not be as wildly inconsistent though – at least imo. I understand ‘letting the horses go’, but discipline is clearly lacking 🙁

In fairness, I thought there was a concerted effort – at times – to go on the attack last night. Too many quick shots and settling for jumpers though. I don’t have a problem with jumpers or 3’s – I love 3’s – but our team often shoots them with a ‘first look, best look’ approach. It gives me the sads.

By “somewhere else” I didn’t necessarily mean another coaching gig. Plenty of former-coach broadcasters have had their chances to return to coaching and turn them down. I’m guessing that the money is vastly different, but for most the peace of mind seems to be worth it.

I reluctantly agree that Gott is here for a minimum of 2 more seasons. Between his absurd contract and relationship with Yow he has two more seasons to completely burn this puppy down. I wonder though what the state of the program would be if he is a bubble team again, his recruiting is sub par again and he has more transfers next year. Would that ultimately FORCE Yow to do something or would she just lean more heavily on his sweet 16 and 3 straight berths as leverage against the revolting fan base?

Although, as I have mentioned before, his off the court stuff may be his ultimate downfall and is more of an issue than a lot of people want to admit.

This team had no preseason expectations, but because if has made the mistake of proving it is better than expected, we think we have to win every game with a young team. So since that is not happening, fire the coach, and maybe get someone not nearly as able. He has gotten us in the tournament, every year, yet we have put our selves in jeopardy of making it this year, because we lost quite a few close ones. Gott is the coach, and he can’t play on the court. We fuss about no defense, when defense kept us in the UVA game. Guess it is Gotts fault when guys miss wide open shots, and most notably a layup in the UVA game. These guys have played long enough, that they know what to do, and when you lead them there, you can’t make them do it. 33% shooting? This team has to accept responsiblity also. It is not always on the coach. And there are no perfect coaches out there. When we lose he is hated, and when we are on top, he is the greatest. I am still in his corner, and I am sure DY will not make any rash decisions on him, because of some discrutled fans. We can still salvage this season. It is certainly better than 6 straight seasons of no invites to the big dance.

Win the rest of our games. Should have beaten UVA, and figure we lose to Louisville, so we now have to beat the Cards. Difficult yes, but not impossible.

The flagrant on Martin is a terrible, inexcusable call. If you’ve played pickup basketball before, you’ve probably done what Martin did at least once. You’re running back up the court and not really paying attention, and you ram into a guy. It happens all the time. If Nolte doesn’t act like he’s been shot with a cannon, nobody even notices.

The 3rd foul on Brogden was debatable. He was doing a pretty darn good job of moving his feet and not reaching in on Trevor. The 4th foul was really bad. He had inside position and clearly beat Martin to the spot to intercept that pass. It shouldn’t have been a foul, and if it had happened to us we’d be up in arms about it.

    As to State’s shot selection:

We have some issues with shot selection. Kyle often has too quick of a trigger on long twos. Ralston often takes tougher shots earlier in the shot clock than I would like (though he has largely cut the long 2s out of his game, which is a huge improvement from last season). Lacey takes tough shots, but he makes a whole ton of them, so I really don’t have a huge issue with his shot selection.

Our average time of possession is 19.1 seconds. That’s 258th in the country, which is well slower than the national average. Quick shots tend to stand out in our minds, but we don’t shoot an abnormally large number of them. The problem is less the quick shots, and more what happens after the first shot opportunity is shut down. We often have a primary action that starts a play (Turner running off a set of baseline screens, Lacey/Cat P&R with a big, etc.), but when that action gets shut down there’s not a secondary option to switch to. The defense bends to shut down the first option, but there’s nothing in place to take advantage of how the defense has shifted. The ball doesn’t ping around the perimeter to create open shots. The upshot of this is that we’ll work an offensive play and it’ll get shut down, then the ball gets brought back up top with 15-20 seconds left and Lacey/Cat pound the ball while they offense sets up a different play. So we’re using a lot of clock, but we’re not getting a lot of motion and moving the defense around.

All that said, our offense is ranked 38th in the country, so it’s not like it’s a disaster.

Xphoenix, you’re right. The quick shots all came after the flagrant foul. We had the ball 9 times for a total of 80 seconds after the flagrant.

The main thing I know of is his drinking and hanging out at bars during the season. My inlaws live in N Raleigh and saw him out quite a bit last year and a couple times this season. Add that to the other stories I have heard from my friends in Raleigh and I just dont think thats a good look to have your head coach trying to pick up women. I may be in the minority or totally wrong but I just dont think its a good thing. He has been known to hit Atlantic Beach pretty hard as well. Kindof has a billy gillespe feel to it.

Think about any other job, if your performance was suffering because of it wouldnt that be an issue? And another thing would be how comfortable would you be sending your kid to play for him if that was his rep?

I know if you post this on the other site they ban you so if this crosses the line here I will delete it.

Wow. People on the internet can post anything. And will. He just got a divorce? When did this happen? Are Gottfried and his wife aware they’re divorced? I guess I’m not a fan of throwing out unsubstantiated crap and hoping it sticks.

Edit: I just went back and looked, and you are the same guy who “heard” from inside the Athletic Department Beejay, Freeman, and Cat are transferring after this year.

    Quite the rumor monger.

Xphoenix, you’re right. The quick shots all came after the flagrant foul. We had the ball 9 times for a total of 80 seconds after the flagrant.

But that’s not really true. 1) We certainly had quick shots before the flagrant, and 2) you can’t really count the last 3 possessions, since we were down 5 with 45 seconds to go, of course they were quick shots.

The real question isn’t “did we take quick shots?” The real question is “did we take good shots?” So lets look at those possessions down the stretch after the flagrant was called.

    1) Cat makes an and-one layup, 12 seconds left on the shot clock.
    – Fantastic possession and great result. No complaints here.
    2) Lacey missed 3 off of Turner penetration, 26 seconds left on shot clock.
    – It’s a relatively quick shot, but it’s also a good one. The ball actually moves really well on this possession, and Turner pump-fakes, drives to pull in help, and gets Lacey a great open look in rhythm. It’s a terrific look that we’d take any day of the week.
    3) Cat missed layup, 28 seconds on the shot clock.
    – Again quick, and again I have no problem with it. It’s terrific recognition by Cat. Both of the interior help defenders have their backs to him and the whole side of the floor is cleared out for him. It’s a defensive lapse on Virginia’s part, Cat gets all the way to the rim, and Perrantes makes a great defensive play to make it a tough finish. You can complain about Barber not being strong enough to finish, you can’t complain about the shot selection.
    4) Turner missed 3 in semi-transition. 32 seconds left on the shot clock.
    – This is the only shot I’d say is actually poor shot selection. Turner gets a decent look (Brogden is sleeping a bit, and gives Turner more space than he should have) and it’s understandable to want to get a good shot before UVA gets their defense set, and that’s a shot that Turner is comfortable shooting, but we probably could’ve gotten a better shot.
    5) Lacey layup over Gill, 12 seconds left on the shot clock.
    – The ball movement actually isn’t particularly good on this possession, but Lacey gets Gill to switch onto him, and he takes him off the bounce for a tricky little finger roll (probably a tougher finish than the shot Cat missed earlier, but Lacey makes this one).
    6) Martin missed 3 after Lacey kick-out, 20 seconds on the shot clock.
    – As I said earlier, I think Lacey makes the right pass here, and if Martin takes that shot in rhythm right off the catch it’s a really good look. After he jab steps and hesitates, I wish he had pulled it back out

Shots didn’t fall, and some bounces on rebounds didn’t go our way and we lost. There were certainly moments of poor shot selection earlier in the game (as every team has), but other than the Turner 3, I have no real problems with our shot selection down the stretch.
