State wins at (9) Louisville

State played its way back onto the bubble with a big 74-65 must-win at 9th-ranked Louisville today.

Barber led all scorers with 21, Lacey added 14 and Anya had three blocks.

This was the type of game State had struggled to finish against Notre Dame and Virginia.

State has a week to prepare for Virginia Tech in Raleigh next Saturday (certainly another must-win, as they’ll all probably be from now on).

Iowa’s impending loss would be good for our bubble life. Not that they were really very worthy to begin with, but still…

I would like to talk about what nobody else is talking about- BJD’s performance yesterday. For years, the player was hounded by hostile fans because of his loss record and his impact on our games. Some said he didn’t have ACC talent. Some demanded that he be shown the door and replaced. It was never a question of heart or effort. He just couldn’t produce the W as lead moderator. It was truly disappointing to those of us, who had to suffer (for a long time) and wanted what was best for our beloved university. He showed great maturity and a die-hard attitude by never quitting on his team or dream.

Yesterday, he showed that in the capacity of a role player, who could step into the game in a time of need, he could succeed. None of us would have believed it had we not seen it. He never played outside of himself and stayed laser-focused. He was a wolf. Sometimes, we just have to put our trust in the coach and roll the ball out there on the court and let player play. Well done, (role) Player. Well done, BJD. The curse has been broken.

(I really shouldn’t write when tired.)

Was this the first victory of signicance in the black uniforms?

The Cheats’ recent struggles have not helped Iowa’s cause at all. Iowa’s win @ Cheats is their best win. It’s a good one, but it’s getting devalued with each Cheats loss. Hawkeyes also swept Theeeeee OSU and have a win over Maryland. They’re still very much alive, but trending down following a home loss to Minny and this loss to Northwestern (show Doug Collins’ reaction after every play!)

Purdue beat Nebraska today. If we win what we can then our loss to them may not matter, but it’s still something to keep an eye on since they’re on the bubble as well. Minny @ IU right now, kinda the only thing on tv since BC/Miami was postponed.

I thought creative, and enjoyable 🙂

Yeah, I pretty much think so. I recall State beating Clemson at home – I think? – in Gottfried’s first season. It was a nice win, and helped us get an 11 seed – but pales to this win.

Not sure if yesterday makes up for that crime in Durham – also in Gottfried’s first season. State was on their way to a 20+ point win that night in the black unis, but lost because reasons.

Yea – I see those black jerseys and I develop a tick. Painful losses in that color (in basketball).,, hell, we should probably give gott an extension based on that alone. (Halfway serious)

Don’t mean to speak for the OP, but I believe it’s some light joking about BJD creating the game thread and State winning.

He’s got a better record than I do, for sure 🙂

As much as the week off seemed to help us the week before UVa & Louisville, it feels like this break is coming at the worst time. We have the momentum, we’re healthy, and should be fresh. Can’t change the schedule but I wish we could tee it up again right now! I’m ready. Bring on the Hokies!!

I dreaded starting the gameday thread, as my Karma is…whatever the opposite of Midas touch is.

But like Lenin Cat says, next mammal up in service of Glorious Red Cause! Forward!

Can’t get too cranked up until we see this team win two games in a row in 2015.

However, i do like the way the schedule is laid out in front of us. I like having another week to fine tune. Clearly, that previous week made a big difference at the “Yum! Center.” (hilarious name!) Another week preparing for the stretch run should help.

I’ve slammed Gott, but have to give him (and the coaching staff) a ton of credit for this game. The team played well in the first half, and then played better in the second. Great win, just hope we can deal with success.

Big win. It’s going to be tough to keep us out with wins over Duke and Lville. There is obviously a lot of work ahead but barring a total collapse, I feel like we are going to be ok (as in the right side of the bubble).

BJD95 said: “We will know if we’ve grown up or if we are peaking by how we play against VPI…”

I agree. For the most part, the team has gotten motivated for the big games, only to tender a….less than optimal effort against teams they should dominate. I have zero idea what to expect from this game. I’d like to think we’ll build on the huge victory and that the “growing up” and “lessons learned” will show benefit. But I hoped for that after the Duke game, too.

The Duke and Louisville games showed what this team can do. IMO, Saturday’s game is a much better bellwether for the remainder of the season. For the rest of the year, there are no days off.

As long as Ralston doesn’t throw up 8 or 9 bricks in the 1st half, we should be okay. Those things get us in a hole and the team starts to panic. So I hope he is either hitting or sitting.

^ I thought he showed much better judgement on Saturday. In fact I thought the team’s shot selection and spacing was better than it’s been all season. Defense and rebounding too for that matter. And Cat deserves some kitty treats if he can continue to be the guy he’s been the last three games.
