College Football Championships (and some basketball too)

The glorious Conference Championship Saturday gets into full swing today. Tomorrow, the CFB Playoff picture will cease to be mere speculation, and the bowl scenarios will no longer be just projections.

Currently, the Pack’s most likely bowl destination appears to be in Charlotte to face an SEC foe in the Belk Bowl, but that could change between now and lunch time tomorrow.

Oregon already got their playoff ticket punched by punching ‘Zona in the chops last night, 51-13 in the PAC12 Championship. What should be scary to other potential playoff teams is that the Ducks didn’t even play particularly well on offense and still managed to hang 51 on the Wildcats, while their D broke ‘Zona’s spirit.

Northern Illinois performed a similar chop-punching on Bowling Green in the MAC Championship, 51-17.

The Big12 has no championship game, but they do have some games today that matter in the playoff discussion…

(9)KState vs (6)Baylor, 7:45pm, ESPN

and

Iowa State vs (3)TCU, Noon, ABC

The Conference USA Championship matters, at least to people in Huntington, WV…

Louisiana Tech vs Marshall, Noon, ESPN2

The SEC Championship gets going a little later this afternoon…

(1)Alabama vs (16)Missouri, 4pm, CBS

And the ACC and B1G go against one another for ratings later this evening…

(13)Wisconsin vs (5)Ohio State, 8pm, FOX

and

(4)Florida State vs (11)Georgia Tech, 8pm, ABC

And if you’re still craving football even after all of that (and you’d have to be) the Mountain West Championship caps the party off tonight…

Fresno State vs (22)Boise State, 10pm, CBSSN

Even though it might be Conference Championship Saturday in football, there’s also some decent basketball peppered in today as well.

UVa travels to VCU (ESPNU, 2pm)

Gonzaga at ‘Zona matches up 2 top ten undefeated teams out west (ESPN, 5:15pm)

Plus the Pack will hopefully extend a warm welcome to Danny Manning tonight at 7:30 (ESPNU).

A lot of commentators touting Ohio State in the #4 slot based on the Wiscy game and the fact it was a conference title game.

I can’t begin to imagine the level of outrage in Waco and/or Fort Worth if that happens.

It would be Florida State that would be left out, not TCU. TCU jumped FSU in the seedings last week and won impressively, as did Ohio State. I still think you have to go with the Noles for the fourth seed.

North Florida beat Purdue yesterday! Well that may not be a good loss?

I understand my take on it is contrary to what is being said by espn and others. Most have Bama, Oregon and FSU as locks. But the committee made the deliberate decision to seed TCU over FSU ladt week. The Frogs went out and took care of business against a very bad 0-9 Iowa State team. FSU squeaked by as they have been doing the past month. This time though it was a good and highly ranked GT team in a conference championship.

It is going to be interesting to see how this shakes out. Will the Big 12 be penalized for not having a true champion? Art Briles and the Big 12 commish are feuding. What kind of weight do you give to all of FSU’s close calls? And what do you do with Ohio State?

Seems to me there are six deserving teams this time around. Baylor and Ohio State get left out IMHO.

    Oregon, Alabama, FSU, tOSU

FSU and tOSU get the last two spots. FSU is an undefeated P5 Conference Champion. tOSU is a 12-1 conference champion being compared to an 11-1 TCU (not a champion) and an 11-1 Baylor. The eye test also leans their way.

NJIT beat Michigan. One game is nearly meaningless.

This is why the committee should keep their big yaps shut until…well, today.

Radford wins @ VT … ACC is piling up some bad losses. Bottom 1/4 of the league (or maybe more) look like they’re going to do no one any favors with RPI rankings and such.

Yep. The bottom of the league looks REALLY bad. And it is pretty deep, too.
