#Gameday: Pack in Black

It is GAMEDAY, but it doesn’t feel like it this afternoon. Every game in which I seem to have any real interest is not actually scheduled until tonight — which, of course means that those games will generally overlap with where I will physically be present in Carter-Finley.

In addition to what hopes to be a fun day and night in and around Carter-Finley…it is also a HUGE night/weekend for NC State recruiting. Emmanuel McGirt and Nyheim Hines are expected to be in Raleigh along with 12 to 15 high schoolers from the class of 2015 and another 25+ potential targets from the 2016 class. The two supposedly want to play together and we were able to get McGirt through his visit to Athens, Georgia last weekend without committing. As you can see below, it looks like Hines had a pretty decent night last night…

Speaking of football recruiting…look who spent some time hanging out last night?

Heading into today, I REALLY liked the Vegas action of NC State minus 16/16.5 points. That is, I really liked until I saw the following:

I’m sorry…I think I still like the Pack to cover tonight!

Much more important to me to lay a foundation. Get the system running. Play guys who will still be here on the next decent-to-pretty good team, even if there are growing pains.

And last year was almost impossible. Richmond had better talent than us, until their 2 best players (WR and LT) got hurt. We had no QB at all. Nothing to be done with that.

Going 0-for-ACC again would give me pause. But it’s more likely we go something like 5-7(2-6). That’s not GOOD by any means, but it’s not “having shown nothing”/get fired territory.

Seeing them dance around on the sidelines after a nail biter against ODU is quite telling. This is who we are, and the players are more than satisfied. Could you imagine a Mack Brown coach team dancing around on the sidelines after barely scraping by Old Dominion?

Winning 5 or 6 is definitely doable. That would be a step in the right direction for sure. Baby steps.

Mike Leach would pillory their girlfriends if they did that on his squad.

A satisfying release after a win or the shame of a loss. I’m assuming Alias that you choose the latter? And all this Mack Brown fellatio should stop.

Yeah, why would a bunch of freshmen be excited about a win. Act like you’ve been there before >:[

After last season, they are looking for reasons to feel better about themselves. I have no problem with that.

Leach’s team (again, inherited squat) was awful last year and is 0-2 with losses to so-so programs (Rutgers, Nevada).

He should lock them in a shed until they learn to play better.

I’m pleased that after a great 4th quarter after very slow start…Brissett played very well the whole way tonight.

Both lines played MUCH better in the second half. Not going overboard, but encouraging.

Secondary and linebackers still need lots and lots of work.

Played out pretty much as expected.

Jury may still be out on Doeren, but the S&C staff have already proven themselves keepers. They get the MVP for first two games.

Those bitching about the win deserve far less than this squad. Clueless whiney bitches.

No doubt. It’s like night and day from last year.

Good point, Foose. We have looked very well-conditioned.

There’s no need to dichotomize the opinion on DD. We haven’t learned whether DD will succeed or not. But do we feel better or worse about his chances after the first two games? You gotta feel worse. He has failed so far.

To say ZERO correlation between skill sets of program building and “coaching” is wrong. You could say LOW but that’s speculation. I don’t buy it. A superior coach optimizes talent. I haven’t seen that.

I have a good feeling about DD. That feeling has steadily deteriorated every game he’s coached.

We simply aren’t very talented, and are extremely young where there is some talent. Wins are still gravy.

But having a QB is a 2-win difference all by itself.

I did say “low” and the point of comparison is between (1) overachieving with inherited, poor talent; and (2) program building.

I feel ok about where we are after 2 games, because I thought this was a 4-5 win team. Next year more like 6-7 wins, then hopefully a breakthrough after that.

This seems like a broken record in Raleigh. Seems like I have heard this for way too many years.

“We simply aren’t very talented, and are extremely young where there is some talent. Wins are still gravy.”

I do agree on a couple of keys things.

    1. QB play has been positive and I’m glad he is here.

    2. Jury is certainly out on DD and his coaching ability. Talent or no talent (ok little talent) he still has to produce a product worth paying for.

    Defense needs some serious attention….

I’ve been saying that it was a solid win by NC State’s offense tonight.

Not many have picked up on the finer points of that statement.

I take away from this game that State has no pass rush and that exposes the poor pass defense. State also can’t stop the run or tackle their way out of a paper bag. All 3 of those things will prohibit wins against better teams than ODU this year because State will allow more points and score less. Improvement from the front 6 is a must.

Fortunately, Wake and Presbyterian are no better, and BC and USF may not be. Beyond that, no too optimistic.

I don’t know if BC is that far behind. They did run the ball pretty dang good against Pitt. I can see them getting 300 on the ground against State.

Totally agree, thought our d-line looked terrible tonight.

While I’m glad we won, can we please stop the scoreboard from playing songs and noise when our own offense is in the huddle and under center? No, everybody does not need to clap their hands when the offense needs to hear the snap count. Drives me nuts.

One big positive from the first two games. 5 total penalties for only 25 yards. Great discipline so far.

I have never understood the stupidity of wanting to wear black this time of the year! The danged Vietcong weren’t even that dumb!
