Camp Opens

WRAL:

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State opened its second training camp Saturday under Dave Doeren with a quarterback in place this time.

The Wolfpack also has a year of experience in Doeren’s system. That puts the team on better footing while trying to improve on last season’s struggles.

“I thought the guys came out with a great attitude,” Doeren said. “Excited about the leadership, something the older guys showed. You can see where we left off in the spring.

“Some of the guys really grabbed on to what they needed to work on in the summer and came out here with a great attitude.”

Doeren said the team will not work out in full pads until the fifth practice, and he’ll watch how players handle position battles through the coming weeks.

“Last year was something to build off of, and that’s what we’re doing now,” Brissett said. “From summer, we’ve been getting better. I feel like the players understand what happened last year, so you don’t have to keep bringing it up.”

WRAL:

RALEIGH, N.C. — Two buzzwords mark the beginning of year to for head coach Dave Doeren at NC State.

The first of those words is retention.

“You can see, where we left off in the spring,” said Doeren “some of the guys really grabbed on to what they needed to work on in the summer and came out here with a great attitude.

“We were able to hit the ground running,” said cornerback Juston Burris. “We’ve been through enough practices now to know what we’re going to do. We come out and we’re in period seven, everyone can come out and know where we need to go and we can do it at a fast rate.”

The second word: competition.

“It just goes back to that depth, how many good guys we have now and that’s going to push everybody to be better,” Burris said. “If you have one bad day, you might be down on the depth chart.

Competition drives most people to be better, and Doeren is hoping it will do the same for his players.

“We have some serious competitions at various positions,” Doeren said. “I want to see how guys handle a good practice and a bad practice and how they bounce back and recover. You build the chemistry of your team during two-a-days. If we’re not competing with passion, we’ve got a problem.”

“If you fear away from competition, you’re never going to get better,” Burris noted. “If you ever want to make it to the next level, there’s guys coming to take your job every year.”

Check 1973 weather in the first week of camp.

We spent 2 of our first three days in Carmichael.
