Getting to know Northwestern

The Chris Collins led Wildcats of Northwestern will be the Wolfpack’s opponent in tonight’s matchup in the ACC/B10 Challenge (ESPNU 7:30pm). Northwestern is currently 4-4 after a playing in the Las Vegas Invitational. They have played actual competition in their losses to Stanford, Missouri, and UCLA, with their worst loss coming against Illinois State. Where they are unknown is their wins, Eastern Illinois, Illinois Chicago, IUPUI, and Gardner Webb. They are a guard oriented three point shooting team that mainly plays man defense, though we all know it’ll be a heavy dose of zone against the Pack. One of their best players, Drew Crawford, has been sidelined due to back spasms that forced him to miss all of their last game, UCLA, and limited to a handful of minutes in the previous game, Missouri.

Henry Bushnell (InsideNU.com)
Northwestern Basketball Practice Notes: 12/3

– Crawford practiced yesterday, and is sure he will play on Wednesday. Collins was a little more reticent given the nature of the injury (back spasms), saying that they were “cautiously optimistic” about Crawford’s availability.

Crawford did say that one added benefit will be the charter flight that the team will take to Raleigh. He also noted that he will use an electronic muscle stimulation machine on the plane in an attempt to subdue the negative effects that the flight can have on his injury – it flared up on the plane to Vegas.
Collins also talked about how big of a blow it was when Crawford left the Missouri game due to injury. “That lets the air out of the building a little bit,” he said. “He [Crawford] is our leader. He’s kind of the big brother on the team. I think the guys saw him go down and it knocked them back a little bit. You’re always more confident when your big brother is at your side.”

Crawford himself downplayed the impact a bit. “I think my teammates are capable of playing great without me,” he insisted. “But that being said, I want to be on the court, to help my team, to show them that I’m leading by example.”

If Crawford can play these are the likely starters:

#23 JerShon Cobb : 6-5 Jr. Guard (43.3% 3FG)
#1 Drew Crawford : 6-5 R-Sr. Guard/Forward (44% 3FG)
#3 Dave Sobolewski : 6-1 Jr. Guard (25% 3FG)
#14 Tre Demps : 6-2 So. Guard (37% 3FG)
#22 Alex Olah : 7-0 So. Center

The Wildcats don’t like to push tempo, 64.6 (ranked 319 in the country), but they are fairly efficient. Now being a guard heavy team that loves shooting the 3 (34.3% of their points come from 3pointers) while averaging 37% from behind the arc they aren’t bad inside the arc either (51%) and okay at the line (71%). On defense they mostly use a man defense and are pretty bad at taking the ball away so we’ve got that going for us.

Coming off the bench will likely be:

#34 Sanjay Lumpkin : 6-6 So. Guard/Forward (55.6% 3FG – 5/9)
#32 Nathon Taphorn : 6-7 Fr. Forward (30.8% 3FG)
#13 Kale Abrahamson : 6-7 So. Forward (45% 3FG)

When Taphorn comes in the game the only place he’ll shoot from is behind the arc. Of the 10/30 FG’s this season he’s 8/26 3FG. It’s pretty clear, this team is going to slow it down, run a half-court offense, and take as many 3 point shots as they can.

But the Wikipedia entry said King Hippo is like the 10th most popular NES character of all time!!

Miami and BC wins necessary to win the challenge. Realistically, either/or to get the split. Go Sparty. Tonight and Saturday.

^Oh yes … c’mon Sparty. The evil empires must fall.

You can’t teach a 7’9″ wingspan (no wonder the jabs were so effective), and he does have some offensive skill. Plus, totally the MVP of the training table.

Holes come out strong at home…. up 12-4

Best game of the season. We played terrific on both ends of the floor. Very heartening to see continued improvement.

ACC looks ripe for the picking this year. Outside Duke, ‘Cuse, and Pitt is a whole lot of work in profess. Roy’s boys are total Jekyll & Hyde.

Having Vandy back helps open the court up for Cat, Buckets and Des. They all played great games tonight although you won’t see it in Des’ stat line. Totally shut down their offense which was nice to see. Double double for Freeman who worked hard out there. Might be the team’s best game of the season so far. Hope they keep it going

Also, PNC was near empty, so tix should be easy to come by if you can make it out. Seems the team took the NCCU loss to heart and are playing hard. Definitely worth it to watch em in person.

Disgraceful to bball is UVA right now. 38 points? Fire Bennett for the sake of the league. Just awful for a coach this far into his tenure to not break 40 points at home. Reminds me of a certain coach…

    View from above at game.

Sections 101-107 (where if you wanted a seat in 2006, pony up $100K donation for two LTR’s…..not joke….that is what the WPC told me). They were probably 50%.

Sections 116 – 122 (same, but across court). This is where the Cameras LOOK. Attendance was 75%. LOTS of space on the sides and in the 3rd floor.

VERY DISHEARTENING….and I keep getting these Robo Calls from Gott. WPC and AD have the NAMES, PHONE NUMBERS, and EMAIL ADDRESSES of who did NOT use their tickets by the END OF THE GAME. The “scanner” tells all and there is a list of NO SHOWS printed up.

I will TRY again….but the WPC and the AD need to start ROBO CALLING the NO SHOWS….this is really disheartening.

OK….Black Rusky time….get off my box.

Really a LOT of energy, thanks to the students. Good game.

The Radio said that Ayers, who was ACROSS the court T’up Collins as he was tired of his mouth and wanted to put an end to it. Guess Collins spent too much time with his mentor.

Natilia (sp?) was really complacent tonight. Maybe we are spiking his Gator-Aid. If you go to StatSheet. Nat has called about 35 or so Fouls Per Game for the last several seasons (visual calculations). This year, in 22 or so, he is almost 41. That means he (and his crews) are calling 15% MORE fouls this year.

As to CAT….one fan near me said….”Cat sure loves to go to the hoop when he should be passing to an open man”. NOW…don’t get me wrong. I think we are VERY lucky to have him and Gott’s starting nod is based on the Coaches’ consensus….which is MUCH smarter than my casual observations.

BUT, it does look like Whitt is teaching him the fine art of PASSING. Cat tried to do things that he could not. He was also not being a leader. Tyler was put in the game, much earlier, to calm things down and set the pace.

Gott decided to play Collins’ little ZONEY thing. When we got a reasonable lead, he was MORE than content to use the clock and get a good shot or a break or a dunk.

Collins use a modified zone press, or so it looked to me, with some success, but his zone (which was expected) did NOT equalize things.

Bottom Line…..it was an enjoyable game to be at.

NOW….the NEXT GAME is Long Beach State. This is an OFFICIAL….”WEAR YOUR BEST RED BEACH OUTFIT”.

Think I am kidding…..NADA They are promoting this. I am still rummaging through my “in storage for a slimmer day” stuff trying to find my old RED Speedo Bikini Briefs Racing swim suit…My family has declared that IF I do and IF I try to wear them, that my last will and testament will be filed on Sunday….

SO, come to the game. Wear your “RED” beach stuff….

BTW….as I type this at 11:01….the Heels are UP by 10 or so. The announcers are doing their usual….”DO NOT CLICK” statements about “gas in the tank” and “can’t maintain this pace”….

ALL I WANT TO KNOW…..who authorized the LIGHT BLUE “V” for the V foundation. I might have to write a letter asking for my past donations back…..

Speaking of BLUE…..GOTT and STAFF has NOT worn the ugly colors in a LONG TIME…..

Nice win. Watched the last ten minutes followed by the first thirty.

    NW is
    A) Turrible
    B) Had a bad night
    C) Both A) & B)

Vandy is once again a big boost to this team. Freeman, Washington and Anya are going to be the best three man inside rotation in the country in two years.

We are playing better against the zone

The drinking age was 18 when I was at State so no need for a fake ID

With – UNC loses to Belmont and uab bit beats Louisville and Michigan state…

really like our squad. If cat continues to improve and vandy can stay healthy we will be a team no one looks forward to playing.

  22. packalum44 12/04/2013 at 11:35 PM #

BC, Fl St, UVA, Maryland, Norte dame all pickled ahead of us. No way we finish behind all those teams.

  23. wilmwolf80 12/05/2013 at 12:10 AM #

Bennett at UVA should be beaten with a rubber hose for what he has done to the game of basketball. It is atrocious.

Sparty got a taste of what it is like playing the blue refs tonight. Hand checks called on the perimeter, muggings allowed down low, pretty much standard stuff. On top of that, they looked really terrible for a number 1 team.

Good win tonight Pack, I’m a fan of games that are never really in doubt. TJ was in the zone for the first ten minutes or so, just throwing everything in. He short armed a bunch of shots in the second half, probably started thinking about getting a third game of 30 in a row. Love to see Freeman have a good night statistically, he brings the hustle every time.

    Another year, another challenge tie.

Last night’s game was the second time I have heard the announcers mention our fans and how difficult it is to play in our house. From the TV (living in Texas), I just don’t see it. It does not seem that spirited or rowdy. Am I missing something? The Sparty crowd was unbelievable last night. I know they are number 1 and playing the holes but that is what I would like to see from a TV view.
