Other notables…

Defending National Champ UCLA rolls in at #15.

Future ACC member Louisville gets a top ten nod at #8.

Regional interests Western Carolina (#31), ECU (#38) and Coastal Carolina (#40) all make a showing as well.

The paper also recently featured the Pack’s Amazing Carlos Rodon, and his development into a true pitcher….

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sometimes the process of becoming a superstar is as intriguing as the remarkable numbers that are turned out by these athletes.

Example A is Carlos Rodon of N.C. State who is the heavy favorite to be the No. 1 pick overall in the 2014 Major League Baseball Free Agent Draft next June.

This chiseled 6-foot, 234-pound southpaw pitcher has carved up opposing hitters for two seasons with the Wolfpack after being chosen in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2011 out of Holly Springs H.S. (Holly Springs, N.C.).

The development of this young man, who has hit 101 mph with his fastball, has been something to behold after N.C. State pitching coach Tom Holliday began working with him.

The Pack will kick off the season in less than two months when it celebrates Valentine’s Day with a 3 game set on the road vs pre-season #39 UCSB Gauchos.

A little something to get the juices flowing….

Excited about the upcoming year but baseball is one of those funny sports where anything can happen.

Clutch hitting, pitching (especially out of the pen), and injuries can and will be the factors. Last year our hitting was poor but it seemed we were able to find a way in most cases to get the clutch hits. Pitching was phenomenal, and except for Turner early, we were able to stay mostly healthy. We went to Omaha as result.

UCLA on the other hand could not hit their way out of a wet paper bag, but outstanding pitching earned them the win. I still sit back and wonder what if, what if we could have gotten a clutch hit against them and advanced. I still say that should have been us in the championship.

Or… what if we weren’t playing the abomination that is TD Ameritrade Park, and Trea’s bomb actually left the yard like it would’ve anywhere else in the country. we are, at that point, in the driver’s seat.

Dayum. Let’s hope it makes ’em hungrier…

The bullpen got a huge boost over the weekend.

@KendallRogersPG: BREAKING: #NCState gets boost, as talented prospects, #Temple LHP Patrick Peterson, RHP Eric Peterson transferring there.

@KendallRogersPG: Elliott Avent was just telling me a couple of weeks ago how the bullpen was a concern for the #Wolfpack. Now, w/ Peterson brothers, clarity.

    Eligible immediately.

@RyanTice: Between the 2 of them, the Peterson bros from Temple will bring 57 appearances with them to Raleigh. 38 starts, 12-15 rec, 277.1 IP, 223 K

This just upsets me even more. Were we not ranked #10 preseason last year? The fact that we made it to Omaha with our starting lineup mostly in tact, it’s hard to imagine that we’re not at least top-8. We’re returning the hands-down #1 pitching prospect in the country, and a solid top-10 pick in Turner. If we were anyone else, we’d be top-5 easily.

If I recall correctly, State was #6 in the preseason last year.

We’ve got Rafeal Palmiero’s son, Preston, at first base. A JuCo transfer looks like the bat in the middle of lineup to replace Senay. Both bat from the left side which is good since only one returning player could (Austin).

Speaking of Brett-we’ve got two catchers that can compete to give him some rest. His performence at the plate took a nose dive the last month due to catching so many innings. I would think that Rodon is so good that he doesn’t need to have a top flight battery mate to be effective. If I remember right Danny Canela caught for him his freshman campaign.

Here’s hoping Jake Fincher has a breakout year.

Outside of Rodon’s class, I understand our recruiting has not been top 10, so don’t get used to the ranking…

Who is that semi-pro outfit ranked one spot below us?

At what point can the people realize “The U” is done. This is not the great storied program on its way back to the top.

It didn’t take too much reading between the lines to see how closely linked the Miami steroid clinic and that program was.

How much money has A-Rod charitably given to that program over the years? What else was he helping with and why have they barely edged out schools like Virginia Tech since investigations into PED use gotten serious?

Nothing like high expectations to make us choke. Go Pack!
