Maryland’s ACC farewell

Maryland football disappointment

At the beginning of the season I never imagined that today’s in NC State Maryland football game would be played with this little attention, emotion and excitement. It is a sad state of affairs for NC State, Maryland and the Atlantic Coast Conference that the Wolfpack will say goodbye to our old nemesis, the Maryland Terrapins today in Carter-Finley Stadium with such little fanfare. Over the last 15 years Maryland football has been to NC State football what NC State basketball had been to Maryland basketball in the 1970s – a thorn in the side. I’ve read a lot of articles bidding adieu to Maryland, but none were more currently relevant than Joe Giglio’s article linked here:

One last trip into the heart of ACC country, one last ACC football game, one last go round with N.C. State.

It’s a fitting ACC finale for the Terrapins, original conference members who are leaving after 60 years for the Big Ten in June. Fitting that the end is against the Wolfpack, their spiritual and color-coordinated conference kin.

If nothing else, the ACC’s “red” schools were united in their opposition of the ACC’s “blue” schools.

The two schools will always be linked by the Greatest College Basketball Game ever played (please stop embarrassing yourselves, Duke-Kentucky fans), but the football series has been very good, too. You can argue since 2000, there hasn’t been a more compelling series in the ACC.

[snip]

Maryland also gave the ACC the biggest comeback in NCAA history (since broken), a 31-point comeback in a 42-40 win over Miami in 1984. Then was on the losing end of the biggest comeback in a game between two ACC teams 2011, a 56-41 Wolfpack win, after the Terps led 27-0.

The games between the Terps and Pack in 2001, ’03, ’10 and ’11 were all-timers. It would be fun if N.C. State scheduled the Terps, instead of South Alabama, Central Michigan or Georgia Southern, but that won’t happen any time soon, if ever.

You really can’t blame N.C. State for avoiding Maryland, which former coach Tom O’Brien labeled the Wolfpack’s version of the “Bermuda Triangle.”

It was Maryland that kept Russell Wilson and the Wolfpack out of the ACC title game in 2010. It was Maryland that swept Philip Rivers all four of his years at State, including his Senior Day ceremony when his jersey was retired.

No, we won’t see Maryland on a football field in these parts for a while. It’s too bad. No one else will say it, certainly not anyone from Greensboro, but Maryland will be missed. A hale and hearty adieu to you, Terps. Saturdays in the ACC won’t be the same, and neither will your trips to Iowa City or Evanston.

Maryland will leave ACC having won nine conference titles (1953, 1955, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, 2001) and 344 games. As Giglio shared, “Since the ACC was formed in 1953, N.C. State holds a 29-28-1 advantage in the series, only Duke-Virginia (28-28) has been closer.” NC State has won the last two vs the Terps and currently leads the overall series that started in 1909 by the slimmest margin of 33-32-4. Both programs have 11 conference football championships. You can click here for more direct comparisons of the two programs that will show Maryland holding a slight advantage driven primarily from their success in the 1950s (1953 National Champions) and the late 1970s/1980s.

From WRAL:

A WILD SERIES: The Terrapins’ exit brings to an end one of the league’s most unpredictable series. The Wolfpack lead it 33-32-4, and 11 of the last 13 matchups have been decided by 10 or fewer points. Among the recent highlights: Maryland’s winning field goal hitting the upright last year, and N.C. State reeled off 42 straight points in the final 25 minutes to turn a 41-14 deficit into a 56-41 win in 2011.

In addition to the Wolfpack’s attempt to maintain grasp of an all-time winning record in the series for the Terrapins, State is also looking to avoid our first winless season in the ACC since 1959. State is currently 3-8 overall. Additionally, State will host two high school recruits this weekend, including DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) offensive tackle Brock Ruble. Ruble, a 3-star, 6 foot 8 inch, 320 pound lineman is choosing between State and Maryland (of course). He would be a fantastic addition to the Wolfpack’s well documented needs on the offensive line. Ruble has also been offered by Florida State, Tennessee, Florida, Virginia Tech and at least a dozen other schools.

Joining Ruble in Raleigh this weekend is Jamie Byrd, a JUCO defensive back who played high school football in Florida and originally committed to TCU out of high school. I don’t know if State has offered Byrd yet, but we appear to be battling Arizona where Byrd visited last weekend.

As a parting shot, may I remind you that it was SIX years ago that a first year NC State head coach wrapped up his first season in a home game against Maryland on Thanksgiving weekend. On that day, Tom O’Brien’s Wolfpack may have laid the biggest egg of his career by losing to the Terrapins 37-0. But, that embarrassment was overshadowed by this moment that still lives today:

    Dook > NC State
    Cut > DD

Maybe one day we can aspire to be as good as Dook, or Wake, or Maryland, or Syracuse, or…..

Looks like Duke might have their Coach K in football

  3. redcanine 11/30/2013 at 3:24 PM #

We have more white boys on our squad than Duke.

  4. TheAliasTroll 11/30/2013 at 3:32 PM #

anyone (who has a lick of sense) who wants to watch Auburn/Alabama instead it is on TWC 106 until the conclusion of our sh!tfest

  5. 1.21 Jigawatts 11/30/2013 at 3:39 PM #

I can’t believe Michigan went for 2 at home instead of OT.

  6. CanisRufus70n05 11/30/2013 at 3:42 PM #

Well, this is historic! Zero for the State of North Carolina, and zero for the ACC, with the league’s second highest paid coach. Jimbo Fisher seems to earn his $. My advice to DD… don’t do this again. You won’t get a chance to embarass us again, and draw a check.

  7. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 3:52 PM #

Michigan was also playing without their starting kicker. Only reason I wouldn’t go for two is there was too much time on the clock for tOSU (in desperation mode) to score again.

Anybody who would vote the Buckeyes ahead of Auburn (should they win today) should be shown to a padded cell.

So do we really need to keep kidding ourselves? This man is not right for us, especially at $1.2M/ yr.. He’s not head coach material. Need more proof, just look at NIU’s record this year without him. The coattails just don’t track.

  9. hellfishtat 11/30/2013 at 4:05 PM #

Only once since Earle Edwards has a coach stayed more than 6yrs (Dick Sheridan), and we have only had two coaches with an above .500% ACC record since EE (Holtz, Sheridan).

We will always be mediocre until we find the RIGHT coach and give him time. I pray that Doeren is the one.

I hope that the Lunatic Fringe (aka the 1500 idiots who post here, and yes, I realize the irony that I am posting here today) will give him the change to prove it one way or the other.

  10. TheAliasTroll 11/30/2013 at 4:06 PM #

He’ll be given next year and then if he can get on the board next year in the ACC win column he’ll probably get another year after that, and then I expect a swift exit.

  11. TheAliasTroll 11/30/2013 at 4:08 PM #

” and we have only had a above .500% ACC record twice since EE (Holtz, Sheridan) since then”

TOB did it in 2010 I think

  12. hellfishtat 11/30/2013 at 4:10 PM #

    TheAliasTroll,
you are correct. I should have said only had 2 COACHES with winning ACC records.

  13. Packdude 11/30/2013 at 4:23 PM #

OK, but we’ll get em next week. Who we got?

  14. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 4:49 PM #

We are a mediocre program in a TERRIBLE conference. Coach Doeren inherited a TERRIBLE pool of talent. To give him any less than three full seasons (especially while he is recruiting reasonably well) would be not only foolish, but also near suicidal.

You can’t know that Doeren and crew WILL succeed, either. You will just have to wait and see, like it or not.

  15. Adventuroo 11/30/2013 at 5:03 PM #

    OK,
Home from the game. Sat on the West side and the concrete finally froze my insulated and double woolen socked feet. Gas logs on turbo….Black Russian will be consumed….but I gotta drive BACK to the PNC for the BB game.

I half heartedly wished that Ron Cherry would not be at Keenan or CF. Today, I wished he was. That was about as inept as I have seen or maybe the Zeb’s pooled their per diems and bet on the spread and had to protect it.

At least THREE make-up calls for the Safety that we should have had.

Correction to whomever posted that Coach D is a $1.2 Million man. He be a $1.8 Mill with incentives. Obviously the competitive ones will not be earned this year. Don’t know about the Academic ones.

There were some very gutsy (Stupid is also used when they don’t work) calls today. We have NOT seen that in TOBY or even CTC.

BUT, there were times today that I SWEAR that Earle Edwards was in the booth….I was really waiting for the quick kick on 3rd down.

However, I am to the point that OK….he is NOT going anywhere. I would NOT want to be in the meeting with Debbie next week. BUT, she is not going to cough up any major bucks to sever relations….unless she has pics of him and Tuffy and a few cheerleaders in some REALLY improper poses.

I also believe that he will do better next year. OK….LMOAO about what I just typed. Of COURSE he will do better.

What I do NOT know is now much of this season is pure FATE, Lack of Talent and Lack of Coaching. All the announcers seem to think that we were so bare on talent that we really were lucky to win some…..and they point out that Mitchell did actually get better, after he was hurt.

I know that we do NOT have what TOBY promised…..something called a LINE (both OL and DL). We also seem to be a bit shy in the secondary and LB’s. Running is the only area. Special teams, until their screw up today was also good.

SO, I am going to do the NCSU fan thing…..Live in hope (keep making those payments on the LTR’s) and just forget that this year ever happened.

There are some things in my youth and my career and my adult life that did NOT turn out like they should. I can blame a LOT of folks/things/etc…..but I also have to take some responsibility.

I have listened to DD talk on his shows, his pressers and the pre-game stuff. He actually did not laugh when GH threw two softballs today. My wife even was throwing the STUPIDITY Flag for one of them.

At least Coach Cutt done done in the Light Blue, so I am putting back out the sharp instruments lest I injure myself.

    Black Ruskeee…..where forth art thou?

  16. vtpackfan 11/30/2013 at 5:11 PM #

Family members of players were leaving before halftime. That tells you everything you ever need to know. Awful teams are hard to watch but this team took it to drivin the folks off.

Season tickets 15 years but that’s all for us. We were one of if not the youngest team in the ACC this season. Will any of the returning guys improve this offseason? Of course- but not enough to win one, two ACC games tops next year.

IMO, once you start having recruiting classes ranked between 50-75 year after year the program is on a razors edge. TOB probably liked it that way because his bosses were always amazed with how much he did with so little.

  17. Fastback68 11/30/2013 at 5:18 PM #

Thanks to all the SFN posters this year. Well, most of you anyways. The 80 year old snatch comment scarred me for life. Here’s to better days in the future. Go Pack!!!!!!

  18. eas 11/30/2013 at 5:43 PM #

Well what can you say that hasn’t already been said all year, including wait until next year. Facts we all are living with at the moment:

    We are terrible
Talent level is at the bottom
Coaching sucked this year (doesn’t matter if DD had scrubs or that he may be the greatest coach ever. THIS years coaching sucked)
    Recruiting looks promising
    Support is WAY down

I know we need a QB and an OL bad. However, pretty sure we got plenty of other MAJOR issues. I mean UM just put up 41 points on our defense and not our QB/OL.

  19. BJD95 11/30/2013 at 5:49 PM #

Doeren LOVES next year’s QB (Jacoby Brissette). But I don’t see how OL won’t still be a major problem. And that is a major problem for the program.

We desperately need to bring in some instant impact JuCo OL and front seven on defense, if nothing else, for depth.

5-7 (2-6) next year and I will feel much, much better. Fair or not, we do have to show at least SOMETHING next year. A spark, at least.

BJD95 was close in his assessment that we’re a mediocre (football) program in a terrible conference. Our program, clearly one of the ACC’s worst 3, has taken long-term control of the Atlantic Division cellar. It’s little wonder that so many Wolfpack football fans were drooling over the possibility of a 6-6 season.

I’ve followed Wolfpack football since the 1960s, and this is the worst team I’ve seen so far at NC State. Bar none. There is no talent, and the jury is out on whether or not we have the right coaching staff. We turned a rare 8-game home schedule into an 8-game losing streak, the worst in 54 years, to end the season. I’ve been roasted on here for saying that we have little to look forward to next season, so I’ll say it again: What DO we have to look forward to? I’ll be damned if I know, other than a new QB.

In just a few short years, we’ve gone from being an average-sized fish in a average-size pond to being a small fish in a large pond. ACC extension has hurt us as badly as it has any ACC team, maybe worse than any except possibly Wake Forest.

No school in the ACC, right now, is getting less bang for its athletic buck than we are. We wouldn’t have had a win this season had it not been for playing 3 schools, at home, that are not much better than high school teams. We were fortunate to beat one of them (Richmond).

The ACC already has 3 soccer teams in the NCAA FF and may own the field if the Heels’ women win today; we couldn’t even get either our men’s or women’s teams into the ACCT (as usual). Our b-ball team just lost at home to Central, and women’s b-ball is starting over again with a new coach.

I want to be optimistic, but pray tell just what is there to look forward to for a Pack fan? Baseball, or bass fishing?

As Jed said so eloquently, WOOOOO, Doggie!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 6:27 PM #

Our athletic program is just a big fat joke right now. Wake had its ACC Championship run. Now Duke gets theirs. It is just downright embarrassing we can’t put a better product on the field once in a blue moon considering the resources we have. And mediocre? I wish we were mediocre. We’re not even close to mediocre. We’re getting blown out by bad teams. I can’t put it on this staff yet, but a lot is going to have to change if Doeren wants to stick around. Getting it handed to you at home to Maryland will not cut it. Losing to Wake ad nauseum will not cut it. And losing to Central in hoops, or getting blown out by Temple in the first round with superior taleny, will not cut it. We are a joke of a department right now, and it is nothing but sad.

  22. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 6:30 PM #

I of course agree the Buckeyes have no business being in the title game. But if Aubie were to win here but then lose to South Carolina or Mizzou, it will be the Bucs like it or not. And FSU will murder them.

  23. Prowling Woofie 11/30/2013 at 6:32 PM #

This is OUR Dumpster Fire !!!!

Worst college football team I’ve ever watched.

    EVER.

    And I’m 54…

  24. NelsonHall97 11/30/2013 at 6:52 PM #

Just got back from the game and had time for my fingers to thaw so I could type. We suck!

State football is down…way down. Nothing has impressed me this year. At least Sade and Bauman were a strength at the beginning of the year, but they’ve actually gotten worse as the season went along.

I don’t have any confidence in our coaches at this point. We have a whole season’s body of work to review, and nothing has impressed me. Quite the opposite actually. Poor clock management, stupid 4th down calls, and on, and on.

This will take YEARs to fix if DD is the right guy. If not, we’re the new old Duke.

  25. Wulfpack 11/30/2013 at 6:59 PM #

Doeren did a poor job this year, no doubt. No improvement. Best I can say is team never quit. Fantastic.

State athletics is indeed in the dump. We aren’t doing anything on the hardwood this year, either.

And now Duke goes to Charlotte, while we still have never been. Everybody goes to the party but us, it seems. The ugly red stepchild.

Time to get this athletic program together or else it will be a complete, and I mean complete, restart.
