NC State +32 at Florida State

Our beloved Wolfpack travel to Tallahassee to take on Famous Jameis Winston and the second-ranked Florida State Seminoles today at 3:30pm. If you can stomach watching, the game will be televised (split) on either your local ABC channel or ESPN2.

Obviously, State’s thin and inexperienced secondary will have to find a way to neutralize FSU’s all-everything freshman quarterback. I don’t really understand how that is supposed to happen when I think about how poorly the secondary has played all season, especially in key third down situations. But,maybe Jack Tocho is really an interception machine like he showed against Syracuse before his injury. How good has Winston been this year?

Winston is averaging 12 yards per attempt and 314.2 yards per game, has a 20-3 ratio of touchdowns to interceptions, and a passer rating that ranks second nationally. He strolled into Death Valley under some incredible pressure and played like it was nothin’. Sometimes recruiting rankings are off, and then other times they are really, really right.

CFN has this preview and it picks Florida State 47-13.

The most important item I am watching today is the injury report. NC State desperately needs some good news regarding health as we head into a November schedule that presents a string of games that are all winnable if we can roll out the first stringers — UNC, Boston College, Duke, East Carolina and Maryland provide Coach Doeren five opportunities to win at least three games to become bowl eligible in his first season.

The injury news did get better this week. In addition to Mitchell’s return, the depth chart for today indicated that almost everyone who could return has returned with the lone exception being Robert Crip (still out). Even though FSU’s defense is ferocious, it will be good to see Rashard Smith and Marquez Valdes-Scantling back on offense; so, I’m looking to today to provide Brandon Mitchell something akin to a ‘scrimmage’ to allow him shake off the rust and get some experience under center to be prepared for November.

I say keep the pressure on Winston all day, and our offense needs to pick up the tempo, with our hurry up no huddle offense, and Mitchell it the guy to do it. Maybe a shock is in store for the Seminoles, anyway I am not conceding yet!

If the powers above said that we could win at FSU OR UNC, which one would you take? That’s a tough one.

Posted on previous thread, but I guess I don’t understand the O/U thing with the spread. We are 32 on the spread with O/U of 58. Some posts are saying that means 55-13. I don’t get that. I get 45-13, which is the only way to total 58 with that spread. Are they different bets? If so, why run different bets on the same game?

Confirming what some of us had speculated, from the N&O:

    Q: How did Doeren help?

Caldwell: I was slacking a little bit in the offseason and he pulled me to the side and said, “You need to man up. It’s either you do what you need to do or you’re off this team.” I really look at him as a role model because he made me change my mindset and I became a starter because of that. I really appreciate what he did for me.

    @JohnGalt78,
As I said in a later post after being corrected by Mike, it must have been my own (dismal) expectations which caused me to come up with 55-13.

While I believe my equations are correct, I suppose I should have taken the advice of my HS math teachers and shown my work.

If we were to win today (which I can tell you with utmost certainty we will not) then we would more than likley have our typical letdown game next week.

Goal for this week is to stay healthy and try to sharpen our skills against a legit FSU team.

By the way, the point spread has moved up to 34.5 at most books.

    Go Deacs.

    Early 7-0 spot.

Yeah I saw that, WF is 26 point underdogs in that game

Easy call – I take a win over the Holes any day of the week.

Can’t believe Wake such a huge dog. Not that I expect them to win, but Miami is nowhere near good enough to be such a heavy favorite against anybody (they needed Gator mistakes to beat a mediocre UF squad). They aren’t in Clemson’s league, let alone FSU’s.

Look at Grobe showing some stones! 14-3 Deacs.

Wake Forest dominating da u so far.

Would love it if wake beat them. Stephen morris may be the most overrated since that UNC qb mack brown’s last year.

Looking for signs to be optimistic. No expectations to win, but reason to have some hope for the rest of the year.
    1) Mitchell hasn’t played a whole game. Let’s hope he gets through this one, and shows us what he’s got. If he looks good, the sun will shine a little brighter tomorrow.
    2) Limit the injuries. Not sure eliminating injuries is possible, but we need a break. We need to stop breakin’ em faster than we can fix’ em.

Does anyone know if this game will be blacked out on WATCHESPN due to it being on ABC? I live in Oklahoma so I should be well outside the footprint.

  15. Wufpacker 10/26/2013 at 1:44 PM #

    @inhoc,
My understanding is that the mirror will put in on either ABC OR ESPN2, no matter where you are in the US.

I think that also means across the board availability on ESPN3/WatchESPN.

  16. BJD95 10/26/2013 at 1:50 PM #

Could be blacked out based on the Geneva Conventions, though.

  17. Wufpacker 10/26/2013 at 2:07 PM #

    Good point.

I’m already feeling a bit tortured just waiting for the oncoming ‘behind the woodshed’ moment.

  18. BJD95 10/26/2013 at 2:14 PM #

Michael Campanero. The very essence of “deceptive speed.”

  19. bill.onthebeach 10/26/2013 at 2:16 PM #

Demon Deacons are playing well just as I suspected…

Just need to keep it up for another 20 minutes while Miami cooks under the pressure.

  20. BJD95 10/26/2013 at 2:19 PM #

I still would bet on 24-14 Miami win.

  21. bill.onthebeach 10/26/2013 at 2:28 PM #

Deac defense goes 3 and out… to end the third quarter…

If Tanner takes ’em down the field and scores a TD and burns 6-7 minutes …. this one could be over.

  22. BJD95 10/26/2013 at 2:30 PM #

With Camapanaro killing Miami underneath, I keep waiting for someone else to break free on a deep post route. Bet he would be wide-assed open.

  23. Wufpacker 10/26/2013 at 2:32 PM #

Deacs really needed to convert there.

At least they (kinda) pinned them back.

  24. BJD95 10/26/2013 at 2:37 PM #

    Morris has wretched mechanics.

    …did you guys see this…..

Alabama suspended the block seating privileges of 20 student organizations on Friday, a day after coach Nick Saban criticized fans for leaving early during games.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9880250/alabama-crimson-tide-punish-students-leaving-early

And it apparently wasn’t 99 degrees either…. except around that Bama administrator’s collar after talking to Saban.
