State Nearly Gets Bitten By Spiders: 23-21 Wolfpack

To say that the NC State football team is in rebuilding mode would be a massive understatement.  In a game that was supposed to be over by halftime, the Wolfpack barely survived the Division I-AA Richmond Spiders in a game that would likely have gone the other way had there been a mere twenty more seconds on the game clock.

Richmond took control of the game with three touchdowns on three straight possessions, led by former UVA player Michael Strauss, who was hardly slowed at times by a porous Wolfpack defense. State didn’t help their cause by turning the ball over four times or by committing ten penalties throughout the game, and at times they looked as though they were the lower division team playing out of their element.  Going into the locker room at half, they found themselves trailing 21-13 and in a game that was very much in doubt for the home side.

In the locker room, new head coach Dave Doeren and his staff must have given the Wolfpack defense a strong pep talk because they came out with a vigor and intensity that was missing in the first thirty minutes of the game.  Richmond would not score again, and only gained 83 more yards against the Wolfpack stopping unit, with 38 of those coming on their last drive as they desperately tried to move into field goal range.  On the offensive side of the ball, the Pack started seeing better success and they quickly scored a touchdown to move within one point, 21-20.  There is would stay, achingly at times, until less than a minute to go, when the Wolfpack capped off their last drive with a 48-yard field goal by kicker Niklas Sade.

Richmond was not done, however, and the offense that seemed to stay in the locker room after halftime suddenly found its rhythm.  Starting at their own 25 with a mere 33 sends to go, Strauss flipped a sixteen yard pass to Rashad Ponder, followed it up with a seventeen yarder, and had the ball on the NC State 37 yard line — with two seconds left.  Unfortunately for the Spiders, their field goal man is no Niklas Sade, and was still out of his effective range. They had one last gasp play to try to get the ball in the end zone batted down, and NC State escaped with a win it may not have deserved, 23-21.

Great College football game. Got to like what Sade is accomplishing. We could have the best WR duo in a long while. Valdes-Scantlng and Rashard Smith can make whoever plays QB at State this year look decent.

The LB’s finally started playing the 2013 season last night in the second half. Caldwell and Green were flowing and filling the field side like men possessed. Pittman at Will does all right in pass coverage and makes up for skill with his IQ and hustle.

I didn’t see or FBs or TEs in the game. Were any of them dressed for game? Maybe we didn’t want Clemson to see any of that.

I will agree with Alpha that if Deangelo doesn’t fumble there the Panthers most likely win and we’re singing a different tune. Cam played well enough to win the game. The Panthers defense looks like it will be a top 10 unit for sure. I just have no confidence in the offense. Shula is completely unproven, and the offensive line is pretty poor. I think this will force Gettelman’s hand as a new GM. Rivera will be out and he will get his guy.

Would really be nice to have a Forum page that is functional to discuss these ins and outs as we used to. I love the perspectives of my Wolfpack brethren on the topics of the day.

After the Texas loss to BYU, who lost to UVA previously, which was clobbered by Oregon yesterday. Mack Brown on the hot seat, and took some action, by firing Manny Diaz, DC, formerly at NC State with Amato.

  5. Wulfpack 09/08/2013 at 7:23 PM #

Didn’t knkw that, mak. Thanks for sharing. Mack Brown is indeed in big trouble. Will be interesting to see who they look at. Muschamp? Not exactly lighting it up at Florida. Very stale offensively. Lane Kiffin will be available…LMAO.

  6. Alpha Wolf 09/08/2013 at 7:44 PM #

Lane Kiffin should be booted all the way back to high school. Texas prep schools would put up with his BS, but not a major D1 program.

Looking at it another way…23 attempts for 125 yards is a YPA (by far the most accurate statistic to evaluate QB play) of 5.4. That’s far below the adequacy benchmark (7.0).

You don’t draft a franchise QB #1 overall to “not be the problem.” He needs to put the team on his shoulders and carry them to victories.

Cam Newton is on the border of being an average to below average NFL starting QB. I do agree that the Panthers have very curiously designed an offense that doesn’t play to his strengths.

  8. BJD95 09/08/2013 at 7:53 PM #

Mack firing Diaz is the ultimate passing the buck. He’s a personal of low character, and I’m glad to see Karma kick him in the nuts.

The only problem with that stat is that it completely overlooks receiver play. I don’t think Tom Brady would win with that crew, save for perhaps Steve Smith and Greg Olsen. Smith is no longer a deep threat and the Panthers lack one to extend offenses. It really reminds me of some of TOB’s offenses, actually.

Plus, this is a team that doesn’t know how to win, is not used to winning and has about every bad habit that can break a football team. Look at the player who was ejected — that was stupid play on his part. Or…the special teams guy flagged twice in a row for running out of bounds on a punt. That’s not smart football, and that’s the kind of thing that bad teams do consistently while winners rarely if ever have problems with.

A new coaching staff, some cap room and some smart drafting would be enough to turn these guys around. They’re pretty close, but they need to master the little things, and that starts with the coaching staff.

Bottom line at least for today is if DeAngelo holds onto the ball the Panthers win behind a game winning drive from Newton. But he fumbled and the Panthers lost despite a fantastic defensive performance. That’s just what the Panthers do – they never seem to come up with the play to seal the deal. There are some pieces but not enough. But this defensive line is really starting to make the league take notice. And Kuechly is an All Pro. Gruden believes he is tops in the league.

    UVa > BYU
    BYU > UT

Longhorns AD could have short list with TOB on it

The front seven overall is a freaking monster. But you need better skill position players to win.

I have been stuck reading Pack Pride’s forums all summer. After that last game, i can’t take it anymore. Guys, what do we have to do to get the SFN Forums going again? If it is just more activity, then i will do my part and then some.

The idiocy over there (PP) is more than i can take!

  14. Alpha Wolf 09/08/2013 at 10:37 PM #

” Guys, what do we have to do to get the SFN Forums going again?”

I do know it is actively being worked on, but do not know the specific details. I’m just the Linux guy.

I have asked for an update and I hope to have something more solid for you guys in the next couple of days. I agree it needs to be fixed ASAP.

” I don’t think Tom Brady would win with that crew”

Tom Brady has won with average to substandard receivers for many of his seasons. Brady “makes” WRs like Peyton makes TEs. Heck, Reche Caldwell was one of his “best” receivers one year.

We were woefully inept against the spiders…more discipline is needed for our young folks…I am on the west side and I did stay in my seat. The east side was vacated sad to say….were they spider bitten? Perhaps!!!

The Panthers are 2-13 in games decided by one score under Rivera’s tenure.

    These are facts.

I don’t get all the Panthers hate either, though I understand some of it. I grew up in a household that put college football above all else, so I sort of got free reign to pick pro teams and sports to follow. I grew up an Oakland fan (Raiders and A’s) thanks to Catfish, but latched onto the hometown teams (Panthers and Hurricanes, f the NBA) when they moved in. I stopped following pro baseball for a while, but picked back up when I started playing. Became a White Sox fan when I came to State and lived with a South Sider for nearly all five years.

    1) TOB recruited poorly
    2) DD is installing a new Offensive System
    3) Year 3 (I know I know) is when we should see real dividends.
    4) There are times I miss Amato
    5) Texas can have TOB. (LoL)

  19. budfox88 09/09/2013 at 2:21 PM #

The bad: we almost beat ourselves (an old NCSU tradition in WTF games) with t/o’s and penalties (also an old NCSU tradition, circa Amato, TOB).

The good: penalties and t/o’s are disciplinary issues that can be fixed, and this is a rebuilding, low-expectation year!

Interesting to see how much heart on display for the Clemson game.

  20. choppack1 09/09/2013 at 4:06 PM #

Miss amato??? Holy cow.you are talking about a coach who never went better than 3-5 in the acc without rivers..and a guy who was 3-4 vs UNC in spite of coaching during a span when they absolutely sucked.

  21. Wulfpack 09/09/2013 at 5:42 PM #

Rivera goes on record that he was not happy with the conservative approach instituted by Shula in game one. Cam Newton may not be a lot of things, but you have to let him exhibit what talents he has. You take the good with the bad. You won’t beat anybody scoring 7 points.

“The bad: we almost beat ourselves (an old NCSU tradition in WTF games) with t/o’s and penalties (also an old NCSU tradition, circa Amato, TOB).”

True, but I saw marked improvement with that after halftime. Something Amato and TOB never did, in game. Until shown otherwise, I take that as a team slip up, not a pattern of habit. This team, this staff is different.

And from what I’m seeing, if Brissett comes close to matching hype, this ain’t a 3 year deal. #Pack14 ain’t random.

  23. TheCOWDOG 09/10/2013 at 7:21 PM #

Never one to argue…This team doesn’t need to wait for Brisset. In fact, I pray you guys don’t go there.

Well, I don’t pray, not for that kind of thing.

Anyway, you haven’t seen the best of Thomas…I have. In fact, I’ve previously mentioned that I have. You most definitely have seen the best of Mitchell. All 14 snaps.

    I mean, all of 14 snaps…

I hate repeating myself …on football juice alone, these guys may do a little bit better than 8-4, this very year.
