Matt Dayes leads the nation in scoring. Hopefully his TDs will stay up there. From what I saw of PT inside the 20 I wouldn’t fault coach in letting Matt or Rashard try to scamper it in often or settle for Sade’s FG.

I really appreciate this. Keep up the good work! It’d be great to plot some of the ACC and NCAA team rankings, both week over week but also against previous years.

    GREAT job WV Wolf!

Mitchell has a 360.40 qb rating. That has to be some sort of record.

Credit Nate Irving for one HUGE TFL. Just saw him crush a Baltimore RB in the backfield as I was reading this.

It’s a little concerning that the Defensive Secondary players again led the team in tackles. We really need our LB’s to start making plays and shoring up long runs. After watching our game on tv yesterday, they still are a weak spot. DJ Green was either out of position, blocked, or took the wrong angle on several plays.

One high stat that’s not missed is sacks given up. Credit the coaches for designing an offense that suits our OL and the OL’s heroic effort in playing nearly the entire game without relief in the hot and humid conditions. One of us was critical of some players going directly to the locker room after the game. Let’s give those guys a break.

It’s a little early to read too much in stats, however, we do seem to be somewhere in the area of 30th to 35th in national ranking. This team is only going to get better. I boldly predict top 25 before the season is over.

This is not my first time to note Josh Taylor as a QB to be reckoned with. By November Pete Thomas might be considered the best 3rd team QB in the nation.

Next week’s Post UR Spiders stats edition will reflect the correction the coaches and players put in after seeing the game film. Already the coaches have said that having to move Joe Thuney to tackle to fill in for Tyson Chandler cost us a TD or 2, referring to Thuney’s athleticism in getting out to block.

Also not to be seen in the stats is Bryan Underwood’s lack of playing time. Doeren said Underwood’s drop of a catchable pass was the reason. Do you think maybe Doeren has a performance based program?

This Saturday should be interesting for several reasons, not the least of which will be the distribution of RB playing time, distribution of QB playing time and DE playing time. I’ve heard that Doeren and the other coaches are not happy about the performance of the DEs.

(Sarcasm alert) Sorry to ramble on about football, but basketball drills don’t do it for me this time of year.

^ RE: Underwood (and Payton). They were pretty quiet this game. I noticed their rather poor blocking on some of the outside passes. I wonder how well they are engaged in the new system. They didn’t look good in the first game. They were thrown to quite a bit in last year’s scheme and may not like having to play a different role this year. In addition, we have some good freshman who are stepping up. Performance based org indeed.

  9. Virginia Wolf 09/06/2013 at 11:09 AM #

Greywolf, I agree, Basketball drills don’t do it for me ths time of year. The football team is exciting and thats my focus right now. However, that said, I’m concerned about the Richmond game. They are a very good football team. I think we’ll win but it will be a tough game. Go Pack!!!!

  10. Greywolf 09/06/2013 at 1:47 PM #

Virginia Wolf, for sure Richmond has a good team and we must be aware and play well to win. I am confident that our new coaching staff is hard at work preparing the Pack for the Richmond short passing game. We might have a surprise or 2 for the Spiders.

These games are good for finding out the things like Pack Family pointed to above.

This seems to be a very innovative coaching staff on both sides of the ball. I may have not been seeing what I thought I was seeing but at times Johnson was inside almost playing as an LB while Jarvis Byrd was covering a WR. Makes sense to play it that way.

Can’t wait to see how the QB situation turns out.
