Brandon Mitchell Progressing, Could Play vs Cuse

During Dave Doeren’s weekly press conference he noted that QB Brandon Mitchell is off crutches after an X-ray showed his foot has healed enough for him to begin full-weight walking. Mitchell will spend this week sprinting in the pool to build up strength and conditioning as he works his way back. There is hope that Mitchell may be ready to return to the lineup Oct. 12 vs Syracuse.

This couldn’t come at a better time as State is about to enter the meat of the ACC schedule and we’ll find out really what this team is all about. So far Pete Thomas has been serviceable enough to run the offense relatively efficiently but with the more athletic Brandon Mitchell running the offense, we’re able to add a different dimension which should help open up some more room for our backs and take a little pressure off the patchwork offensive line.

Let’s all hope he heals fast and can get back to practice ASAP.

Coach also had a few other good quotes:

“You’ve got to bring the juice….You’ve got to bring all of the energy because your fans aren’t there to give it to you. You’ve got to basically play where all that energy is bottled up inside of you. You take pride in the fact that it’s your against however many thousand. You look forward to that.”

I was told by someone inside Wake Forest that ticket sales for this game have been subpar.  With Wake playing as bad as we’ve seen under Coach Grobe and State having 4 straight home games to open the season, Wake fans might be losing hope with the young season and State fans might need a break. Throw in a dismal 10 year history for State in Winston-Salem and that’s a formula for a solid “aluminum out,” but I have faith State Fans Nation will faithfully show up and pack BB&T Field.

On a football recruiting note, I’m hearing that State has landed a huge OL recruit who they swayed from the SEC.

Are You going to the game and how many Pack fans are you bringing with you?

I’ll be there, dragging my wife by her good arm. She’s been on IR since before the Clemphson game with rotator cuff surgery. She might be only 50%, but dammit, this is Fake Forest, and we need her in there. Go Pack!

^ Why has the phrase “kicking and screaming” just popped into my head?

  3. ErB 09/30/2013 at 11:22 PM #

Will be there early with a group of about 7.

The only one that I am aware of is Terronne Prescod, who we took from Auburn. That was way back in June though. Nothing new is showing up on Rivals.

Tyler Jones from Stephenson, Georgia changed from Miss State to NC State.

I would like to see Mitchell in the Syracuse game just to get in te flow again, but not play the entire game. Don’t show FSU everything he’s got.

Good to hear about Tyler Jones!

Shute (OG), Jones (OG), Prescod (OT), and Adams (OG) rounds out our linemen in ’14. Throw in Cook, Till, and Bradbury at TE and we’ve got some future blockers.

I’ll be there with about 6 others. Winston is my home and I’ve seen my share of nc state turds left on that field. Dixie Classic Fair is in town so they’ll be more traffic than usual, of course for the fair, not to see the hometown Deacs. Hope to see RED everywhere

I’m just confused, as Rivals shows Tyler Jones committed to us on June 24th.

Hoping to be there. Gonna try to scalp some tix after a short drive from TN.

Thanks for the update on Wake’s ticket sales, still waiting for prices to drop on stubhub but we’ll be there!

Could and Should are two different things. Mitchell will have been out for almost a month and a half. And you are talking about someone with limited reps at QB to begin with. Thomas hasn’t lit it up, but might still be better than a rusty Mitchell for a couple of more weeks.

As a blooming recluse, I shall be there in spirit.

I only have two cats, but once my kids leave the nest I could always get more!

Like Packroller said, tickets on stubhub are still pretty dang high ~ $55, which is much too high for my blood at this point.

I haven’t been to an @Wake game before (since I was a little kid at least)…. if tickets are $55 on stubhub, do you guys think I could pick up tickets for $20 each outside the stadium?

Fortunately we don’t have to have Mitchell to win at Wake not that a win is insured with either QB. From the git go Doeren has said what he wants out of Thomas is to not lose the game.

Thomas is playing like the old style QBs who distributed the ball and managed the game. He hasn’t lost a game for us and actually IMNSHO has done quite a nice job of filling in for Mitchell.

Mitchell might have won it for us vs. Clempson but it was hardly Thomas’s lose. Thomas has done some nice things. That 80 yarder was on the money and his 8 yard scramble for a TD was serviceable. The timing and ball handling on the jet sweeps are good enough to pick up big yardage.

So while we are all glad to see Mitchell coming back, let’s not overlook the job that Thomas has done in his absence.

Thomas has been a very serviceable backup.

There is almost never any reason to use StubHub. Tix for anything are always available on Craigslist, for much cheaper.

He might be able bear weight on it this week and take reps next week but folks should be cautious of the whole comeback from injury process.

If he gets back vs the Cuse then I would hardly expect the Coaches to call his number on many run plays. He will be essentially be taking on a role more accustomed from seeing in Pete Thomas.

  18. wolfpackdawg 10/01/2013 at 5:56 PM #

Save him for EZU & the holes imo.

  19. Greywolf 10/01/2013 at 8:03 PM #

After a little observation of the way Doeren works, my guess is the ‘Cuse game conversation is to give those coaches something to worry about. IMO unless Mitchell is badly needed, and right now I don’t see that happening, he won’t play in that game at all.

Mitchell is a running QB who passes when the opportunity arises. I don’t see him in there to pass without the run threat just for reps.

  20. Alpha Wolf 10/01/2013 at 8:22 PM #

Question is, what has Mitchell done to lose the starting role?

He should be given first-team reps in practice (especially during the bye week) to see if he still has the position that he earned in fall practice.

  21. Greywolf 10/01/2013 at 9:15 PM #

Alpha is right on. The bye week is after the ‘Cuse game (before FSU.) To have him back at full throttle for FSU would be sweet. If nothing else to prep him for UNx.

Consider that Pete has been playing better each week without Crisp protection his blind side. He had really impressed me in the way he has handled it by stepping up in the pocket instead of losing big yards on sacks or throwing of his back foot (things that drove me crazy when Glennon started his career doing a lot of).

One could argue that with Crisp in the lineup and a lot of silly penalties wiped out that Pete should be considered our starting QB until Mitchell has shown he’s back 100%.

Will be there with 3 others – 2 UNC wives and a Tennessee grad. We’ll all be wearing RED in Section 8
