Avent Receives 5 Year Extension

Elliott AventThe winningest coach in State baseball history will continue to add wins to that total. Elliott Avent received a 5 year contract extension with a nice raise that should keep him in Raleigh for the remainder of his career.  Joe Giglio of the N&O has the financial details.

Avent’s program had a breakout year in which he led the team all the way to Omaha and there’s no reason to think he can’t take them back again.  He has 2 of the best players in the country in Carlos Rodon and Trea Turner.  Both will be coming back for their junior (and presumably their last) year next season and the team looks primed for another deep run.

Recruiting has been on the rise since the arrival of Debbie Yow and it seems the financial commitment he has received from the athletic department was all he needed to take his program to the next level.  Increased funding has led to a larger recruiting budget as well as plans for facility upgrades to Doak Field at Dail Park.

With the budding success of the baseball program and the upgrades that Avent himself has pushed for coming into fruition there’s no reason to believe we’ll see another coach at NCSU until Avent retires.  Let’s just hope the drop off that will probably occur after losing this year’s junior class won’t be severe.  That commitment and raise he received from the BOT demands that State stays a top tier program.  Debbie Yow will expect nothing less.

I hope the Rodon-Turner-Austin et al recruiting coup in recent years, and the resulting success on the filed, has lasting effects vs being just being an aberration.

I don’t know the norm for such things (baseball coaching contracts and extensions), but I’m not yet convinced. History shows the recent success to be a spike, not a trend. I’m not a detractor, though. I’m supportive, but on the sidelines in a wait-n-see mode.

All things being equal, I would’ve been more comfortable with a 3 year extension. But perhaps that would’ve been an insult in the college baseball coaching world given the recent success of the NCSU baseball program. As I referenced above, I don’t know. Besides, I guess he needs to be able to tell recruits he has a contract that keeps him here through their playing career at NCSU.

Here’s to hoping the success on the field soon warrants another 5 year extension. Jimmy V says stay away from the lifetime contracts.

The only problem with this is Rodon and Turner can’t get an extension.

I guarantee you that after they leave this Spring that it’s right back to micro managing, and over thinking a game that one must let come to you.

He stayed out of it for the most part this past Spring, no small factor in such a fantastic season.

I mean no disrespect to the guys in here that have developed a strong liking of the guy…they know that.

Coaches can learn and evolve, and as a former Avent skeptic…I think the extension is well-deserved.

Here, Here. The least he deserved after taking the Pack to only their 2nd College World Series. EA’s also got a few more nice recruits in the wings, so this is a +1, w/them knowing he’ll still be around.

A skeptic myself – but I wouldn’t trade the late spring excitement I experienced this year for nuttin’ (well.. maybe ONE thing). ; )

I am not an Avent fan here guys because…
#1- Lack of coaching ability and
#2- Most importantly, I have always believed that he is a poor ambassador for NC State University.
But with that said, last year was sweet. Oh well, time will tell.

I am a bit puzzled by the small bonus for a CWS champ. $90K for bringing NC State a major revenue sport national title? After paying Obama and McCrory, that buys you what, a loaded toyota camry?

“$90K for bringing NC State a major revenue sport national title? ”

To what major revenue sport are you referring?

Also, ditto for another anti-Aventer here. He deserves the extension. I think also he has set the bar high for himself with conference, divisional titles, CWS appearances. Well deserved reward.

    Beat me to it ‘foose.

And I’m a confirmed fence sitter on Avent, albeit with a lean toward the anti.

EDIT – Having said that, the job got done this year and he’s the head man. Extension and bonus were at least compulsory,..and probably deserved if for no other reason than knowing what not to do. See ‘Dog’s post above.

The Astros are going to get Rodon so I won’t be nearly as upset when he leaves State.

^ Then maybe they can win TWO games a week, instead of just one.

    I kid, I kid.

Still not used to them being in the AL. Of course, I’m still not used to the Brewers being in the NL, so it’s not as if I easily embrace change of that sort.

Thanks for the Wolfpack baseball post SSB. I won’t say that you’re wrong about anything, but I will say you’ve re-posted a topic that was posted SFN about 3 weeks ago by JackWolf.

Without the forums around (RIP to my old favorite internet site) I understand it’s tough to provide an update or add more depth to a topic discussion on SFN. And hey, I’m all for bringing more baseball chatter for the Wolfpack so keep it up.

As for Avent’s extension, I just hope there’s a provision in his contract requiring Holliday on the bench for another 5 years too.

Speaking of the Astros, they actually drew a 0.0 Nielson Rating Sunday against the Texans game. Something like 548 total viewers. Quite literally they played a game and no one watched.

^Wow, that’s amazing. They should have just shown an infomercial.
I’m glad that one of my baseball teams made a postseason run this year. As far as the extension: if he doesn’t get something, from his perspective, he’d have to ask, “what else can I do?” (obviously win the whole she-bang, but when that’s your only step of improvement, that’s pretty good) From a managing standpoint, you’ve got to reward results and he produced them this year. Is it the job of the AD to speculate that the cause of success is a few players and hold out till they leave to make judgment? (real question; not rhetorical)
