2013-2014 Men’s Basketball schedule doesn’t let off the gas

More to come, but the schedule is released here.

“I always want a difficult schedule,” Gottfried said. “I want to be aggressive even in a year when we are so young and inexperienced.”

In addition to an enhanced 18-game ACC slate, the Wolfpack will play 10 games against teams that played in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

“This schedule is going to force this young group to grow up quickly and it will help us improve as the year progresses,” Gottfried said.

The regular season opens Friday, Nov. 8 at PNC Arena when the Wolfpack, which is coming off consecutive 24-win seasons, hosts Appalachian State. Four days later, NC State will play at Cincinnati in ESPN’s 24-hour college hoops marathon. The next seven games after the Cincinnati trip will all be at home. The Wolfpack will welcome 2012 NCAA tourney team Detroit to historic Reynolds Coliseum Saturday, Dec. 14.

NCSU, which earned a Sweet 16 berth in 2012, will take on three major-conference opponents in the month of December. NC State hosts Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and welcomes Missouri to PNC Arena Saturday, Dec. 28. The third such contest is a trip to Tennessee on Dec. 18 that will be televised on ESPNU.

AMPED UP ACC
The Atlantic Coast Conference added Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame this past summer, and the Wolfpack will become very familiar with each new team. Gottfried’s squad opens ACC play on Jan. 4 vs. Pittsburgh at home. NC State’s first ACC road game is a trip to Notre Dame, and NCSU visits Syracuse in mid-February. State’s final ACC road game is at Pittsburgh on March 5.

NORTH CAROLINA TWICE IN FEBRUARY
The Wolfpack will have a home-and-away set against North Carolina in February. NC State will play in Chapel Hill on Feb. 1 before the Tar Heels return to PNC Arena 25 days later. The two schools split a pair of meetings last season, with NC State defeating UNC 91-83 in Raleigh on ESPN College Gameday.

ON THE TUBE
Every North Carolina State ACC contest is to be carried live on television. The Pack is slated to have 22 games broadcast on ESPN’s family of networks, including seven contests on ESPNU. All conference games carried on an ESPN network will also be available on WatchESPN. Eight of NC State’s ACC games will be carried on the ACC Network. All conference games carried on the ACC Network or a regional sports network will also be available on ESPN3.

EYE ON NC STATE
For the second year in a row, the Pack will have a regular season game televised on CBS. NC State’s Jan. 18 contest at Duke will be on the national network. Last year’s home contest against Miami was on CBS, marking the team’s first regular season appearance since 2009.

ROAD STRETCH
NC State will spend much of February on the road, playing five league contests away from PNC Arena. The Wolfpack has a six-game stretch over 21 days that includes five road games. It’s the first time NCSU is on the road for five out of six conference games since 1991.

HOME FINISH
As the ACC standings tighten at the end of the season, North Carolina State will have the advantage of playing three of its last four games at PNC Arena. Starting Feb. 26 against North Carolina, t

    I. Love. This. Quote.

A strong regular season schedule? Who knew such a thing was permitted in college sports anymore???

  3. Fastback68 08/23/2013 at 9:56 AM #

    Gott Balls.

It’s attractive for the fans, and the kind of schedule where .500 in the league will certainly merit a dance invite. Win-win on all fronts, unless you are scheduling to make the NIT. Something that you should NEVER do. So glad MG gets that.

I’m surprised that nobody else has highlighted the most newsworthy item – we play the Credit Union! Tis a meme dream come true. Though sadly, Coach Andy’s wife won’t be coming to town.

    Nice work, Gott.
It will probably be painful to watch this year, especially early, but you have to play a tough schedule.
I hope February (5 of 7 on the road, UNC one of the two home games) doesn’t crush us, young teams often aren’t tough enough emotionally to withstand an extended losing streak. They are going to have to because we’re probably going to need some ACCT success to have a shot at the post season.

I think it is obvious that while State won’t have as strong a group of players as they did last season that they will have a stronger team than at any point since Gottfried arrived in Raleigh.

I have no delusions that State will be a top 10 team at any point, but I do believe that we will have a much better season than many people believe and that this year will set the table for a very good 2014-15 season.

The EARLY road test at Cincy is good for us…while we should handle App State at home, getting thrown in the fire immediately is good for a team that is going to need to grow quickly to have any shot at the NCAAs. I hope the games at both Cincy and UT (hell even at UNCG) will teach the road lessons it should to prepare for that aforementioned brutal February slate…

A quick search of last seasons RPI on the non-conference teams shows that only App State and Campbell had 200+. Everyone else is in the 100s or better, and most of those in the 100s were close to 100.

No one appears to have had an RPI of 300 or more last season.

I couldn’t find an RPI for Morehouse last season though.

This schedule is clearly setup to give the team a great RPI at the end of year, although a lot of these teams are no slouch and it means almost none of the games this year will be easy.

Let’s not lose to ECU though please.

    please play defense

  10. MP 08/23/2013 at 1:10 PM #

    Wow, In a 30-day period:

    02/01/14 at North Carolina
    02/08/14 at Miami
    02/15/14 at Syracuse
    02/18/14 at Clemson
    02/22/14 at Virginia Tech
    03/03/14 at Pittsburgh

I could see us struggling but getting tougher. Then kicking asss in the ACCT.

  11. DRW 08/23/2013 at 1:16 PM #

    UNC-G was 327.

  12. compsciwolf 08/23/2013 at 5:16 PM #

    @DRW

Of course, there’s always one. Thanks, I missed that.

  13. Texpack 08/23/2013 at 5:54 PM #

    19-13 Overall
    9-9 ACC
    10 seed

A way too early prediction. This will be a fun season to watch. Just seeing the schedule gets the blood pumping a little bit more.

  14. Wufpacker 08/23/2013 at 6:24 PM #

    ^ Where do I sign?

  15. redcanine 08/23/2013 at 7:55 PM #

I hope we don’t have to suffer another Oklahoma St. type drubbing this non-conference season. Mizz is capable of doing that to us.

The ACC sched looks wicked haaaad. We gotta go to the Carrier Dome North!

  16. smile102 08/23/2013 at 8:48 PM #

The only ranked non conf. team is FL Gulf @ 25, so not all that “aggressive” scheduling. Only aggressive relative to the past. But the improvement is good and welcome.

  17. john of sparta 08/23/2013 at 9:34 PM #

we’ll lose one of our home ‘preseason’ games:
either ASU or FGC or ECU….which one?

  18. rtpack24 08/24/2013 at 9:50 AM #

I think that everyone will be pleasantly surprised with this team. Might be a little bumpy early but they could be a very good team down the stretch. We will also play with a lot more intensity on both ends of the floor. FGC coach is gone.

  19. blpack 08/24/2013 at 12:04 PM #

I like this schedule. It is very challenging for this young team. We will take some lumps, maybe have an embarrassing loss or three. I think if we buy in and play both ends of the floor things could be going in a positive direction by Valentine’s Day. We’ll see what happens.

  20. tjfoose1 08/24/2013 at 2:35 PM #

“The only ranked non conf. team is FL Gulf @ 25, so not all that “aggressive” scheduling.”

    BS.

You don’t base scheduling, or judgement of, on ONE season’s PRESEASON rankings.

    smh

  21. tuckerdorm1983 08/24/2013 at 5:40 PM #

after last year I’ve got very cautious predictions about us. extremely cautious. We have a group of players that are very young and inexperienced. I expect that maybe we will be playing some good ball by the end of the season. Forget about last year. It was a disaster and it is over. Mr. C.J. Leslie is gone. I am not holding my breath we make the tournament. Making it would be overachieving. Failing to get to the NIT would be underachieving.

  22. BJD95 08/24/2013 at 10:26 PM #

The media overreacted last year in picking us so high, and they will overreact in the opposite direction for this year’s team (which has plenty of talent and more depth than we’ve had in some time). Chemistry totally reset, which can only be a good thing.

  23. bigwolfpacker 08/24/2013 at 11:08 PM #

I see 10-8 in ACC. 7-2 at home and 3-6 on the road.

  24. choppack1 08/24/2013 at 11:37 PM #

No way you can predict what we’ll see next year.

The only thing that would surprise me is us being a good defensive team.

  25. VaWolf82 08/25/2013 at 10:03 AM #

The media is not the only group that went overboard last year.
