Baseball & Weather Update – Friday games cancelled

4:06pm Update
State and Carolina both postpone Friday’s Super Regional games. (Link)

Tropical Storm Andrea caused the postponement of both the University of North Carolina’s first game in an NCAA baseball tournament Super Regional and NC State’s first Super Regional game.

The Tar Heels’ opener against South Carolina at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, originally scheduled to begin today at 1 p.m., will now be on Saturday at 12:05 p.m. The entire best-of-three Super Regional has been moved back by a day, with the second game now set for Sunday at 1 p.m., and the third game, if necessary, on Monday at a time to be determined.

Meanwhile, the opener of the Super Regional between N.C. State and Rice at the Wolfpack’s Doak Field, which had been scheduled for 4 p.m. today, has been delayed until 4 p.m. Saturday Details of television coverage are still to be determined.

The Wolfpack was slated Friday to send ace Carlos Rodon to the mound to face the Owls. During five postseason appearances, the left-handed sophomore has given up just 12 hits over 37 and two-thirds innings. He has 10.75 strikeouts per nine innings and a 0.72 ERA in those starts.

Rice was slated to counter with junior Austin Kubitza, who has an 8-2 record and a 2.02 ERA this season.

Probably a good thing that the game was called since it appears some of our players might have had a difficult time getting to the ballpark.  This photo was tweeted by Tarran Senay just before today’s game was called….

______________________________

As of 3:20pm EST parts of Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh were closed due to high water and parts of Avent Ferry near NC State are also also shut down as the area is under a flash flood warning.

The last we heard, officials were targeting a 7pm start for NC State Baseball.

UPDATE: N.C. State is still planning to play tonight’s NCAA Super Regional baseball game against Rice at 7 p.m. According to an athletic department spokesman, “there is apparently a window from 7-10 p.m., with more rain expected between 11-12. A lot has to do with how the field holds up over the next three hours.” The Wolfpack official said he inspected the field at around 3 p.m. and found the outfield to be “soaked, but with no standing water.”

Here is a link to more from Brett Friedlander regarding the difference in approaches to the situation from officials in Raleigh as compared to those in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina and the NCAA have decided to postpone today’s Game 1 of the Tar Heels’ Super Regional series against South Carolina at Boshamer Stadium. It will now be played Saturday at noon, with television coverage by ESPN. According to a statement, “The NCAA and the participating institutions all agreed this was in the best interest of the student-athletes and fans.”

Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played Sunday, at 1 p.m. on ESPN, while the Monday “if necessary” game time and network will be determined Sunday.

I’m not a baseball expert, but I’m not so sure trying to squeeze in the game tonight is the best step for the Pack. It just kinda feels like opening up a door for @NCState_Shit to more easily step through.

Kendall Rogers, a writer for PerfectGame.org, just tweeted this….

Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG 3m – On the phone with #NCState coach Elliott Avent. Said it’s raining cats and dogs in Raleigh … says game likely to be cancelled for today.

Kendall Rogers ‏@KendallRogersPG 7m – Sounds like #NcState and #Rice will go tomorrow at 4 p.m., but that’s far from official at this point. Just what Coach Avent thought.

  5. Wufpacker 06/07/2013 at 3:42 PM #

Nope, the thanks for this one go to our fearless leader (I think).

I’m just a passenger on this particular bus ride 😀

Pack Pride ‏@PackPride 1m-Tonight’s Rice vs NC State is cancelled, will be tomorrow at 4pm on ESPN2

Our offense is based on speed and aggressiveness- playing on a wet field would be absolutely stupid.

  8. 13OT 06/07/2013 at 3:49 PM #

Why is it that officials will not postpone games when the obvious is way too obvious? We now have 6 and even 7-hour rain delays for MLB games, and this college game should have been postponed no later than sunrise today.

They simply do not give a damn about fans anymore; all that matters is television.

  9. Wufpacker 06/07/2013 at 3:51 PM #

Agreed DBP. Not to mention Rodon getting jerked around with the delay.

Agreed 13OT. I’m actually somewhat surprised they called it this early.

  10. TheCOWDOG 06/07/2013 at 3:54 PM #

Agreed this backside band doesn’t want to go away, and TScells keep popping up outta nowhere.

  11. Wufpacker 06/07/2013 at 3:59 PM #

That’s bcuz you ain’t channeling your weather affectors just right ‘Dog. Better get those tuned up for tomorrow, dammit.

Team letdown will be short lived. Burgers and Beer by 7.

I thought it was raining cats and dogs…

You can see why I said I would just tell Rodon he is pitching Saturday, period. If we had tried playing in the 7-10 “window” and used Carlos on a slop field…I woulda been highly pissed.

Thankfully, that is only a very theoretical discussion now.

Well about 12 noon i went to Doak and they had about 15 books of tickets left that Rice turned back in and i was able to get lucky enough to purchase 2 books. Looks like my birthday wish was able to come through.

    Will Rodon pitch on Saturday?

  16. john of sparta 06/07/2013 at 8:35 PM #

    no one pitches
    no one plays.
    off and on
    rain until
    Sunday.

Good work Tuffy2, what do they call it when preparation meets opportunity?

Watching the Gray/Nola duel in Red Stick, very impressive. Surprised the Cubbies passed on Mr. Adderall at #2. With or without the time-release cocaine, the boy looks like a RH version of The Carlos. Nola ain’t too shabby neither.

Good work Tuffy2, what do they call it when preparation meets opportunity?

elvislives- For me the preparation was getting soaked until my wife drove up with the credit card. I go to the window and realized she had borrowed it. The ticket agent was very cool as he held on to the tickets and 10 minutes later here comes the wife. Great seats sitting in section 5. All I could ever ask for. Well, maybe a couple wins to boot. First game at the Doak and may the pack make a memorable positive one.

Whatever happens this weekend we should all be proud of the team and remember the adversity that some of our key players had to overcome for this all to transpire.

  19. theghost 06/07/2013 at 10:56 PM #

interesting that the Pack chose to delay the call – CowDog, bigger disadvantage to the home team or the away team to have to wait out the decision?

  20. TheCOWDOG 06/08/2013 at 7:59 AM #

Away teams draw the dead hand in a delay. Hotels in foreign territory are boring. No room to roam.

In modern times, with spanky clubhouses, the home team boys have a better ennvironment to work the antsy off if ya wanna be at the yard. If not, you still have the comfy of the apartment.

Judging from the USC/UNC game, the weather looks good in the Triangle today. Hope the grounds crew put in some overtime to get the field in shape.

Are we going to have a live discussion. Going to see panic and want to keep up with the commentary.

  23. PackAmy 06/08/2013 at 3:26 PM #

Is it worse when UNC wins because Skye Bolt had the winning hit? I think so.
