Doeren nabs QB, Jalan McClendon

Charlotte (NC) West Mecklenburg quarterback Jalan McClendon verbally committed to Dave Doeren and the NC State Wolfpack yesterday.

At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, McClendon is a big time athlete who exhibits great leadership skills and is one of those super likable teammates. While throwing 22 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions, McClendon led West Mecklenburg to a 9-4 record last year, the school’s best performance in a quarter of a century. You need look no further than his list of offers to understand McClendon’s talent — Miami, Florida State, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia and East Carolina.

The talent and scholarship spacing that Doeren and staff are creating at the quarterback position are to be commended. With NC State’s stable of current quarterbacks that includes Jacoby Brissett, Jalan McClendon should have plenty of time to develop; he probably won’t be asked to contribute at quarterback for three years.

McClendon is NC State’s fifth commitment and the Wolfpack’s fourth in-state verbal in the 2014 recruiting class. He visited NC State last weekend with currently commitment, 3-Star Wide Receiver Bo Hines of Charlotte.

I like that Doeren and Nielson are putting down the tracks in the Metro Charlotte area. We’ve been crushed (our not even putting much effort) by Clemson, UNC and USC in that recruiting hotbed for years. Even Duke has faired better of late in Charlotte than us.

Sounds like there is still a chance for a post grad QB coming aboard. That would really make the position spacing complete. When Canada took over in season at Wisky last year, he wasn’t gun shy to go with a new signal caller. By the Rose Bowl they were on their third QB and I don’t believe any changes in the depth chart due to injuries. Now that is a performance based system in my book.

Jalan, welcome to NC State. I hope you have a fantastic career. I have a good feeling that Doeren and his staff will be able to put the pieces together both on the field and on the recruiting trail. TOB always reminded me of the scowling Quint standing on the bow of the boat in the movie Jaws. Hooper drives the boat and Chief mans the chum bucket. It will be interesting to see how this season unfolds and to read everyone’s inevitable comments concerning two different coaching and recruiting philosophies. Thank you again Jalan. I believe you have made a personal investment on a winning horse. Go Pack!!!!

Brandon Mitchell is the senor transfer out of Arkansas. we are the second biggest school on his list behind Michigan. If he wants to play, I think we ill be his best opportunity.

Don’t know why he’d pick Michigan knowing that they don’t want a repeat version of Robinson. He would be moved to WR before Fall practice is over.

Don’t know if anyone has watched the film of McClendon but it looks like he has a cannon for an arm. He also throws a fantastic goal line fade route where you isolate your best leaping WR to snag it or knock it down in the back corner of the end zone. Two Freshman coming in-Alston and McKeever, are the perfect type targets for it.

One thing’s for sure – NC State has never been good at all without a plus QB. So I am for having as many chits to play there as possible.

I believe we will sign either Mitchell or Bench out of Penn State and both will be eligible next year.

BJD: I agree. In my lifetime of watching NC State football, we’ve only been > .500 when we’ve had a good QB. Now, a good QB doesn’t have to mean a NFL caliber QB (no further comment as to what we’ve squandered the last few years), but it does mean an above average college QB.

Said another way, we’re not going to be winning with stiff in at QB who can only hand the ball off. We need some capable players, and this sounds like a nice addition (if it sticks on signing day).

I can’t think of a single COLLEGE team that excelled without a really good college QB (excelling is relative). Florida doesn’t win those Championships without Tebow. Auburn without Scam.

The incremental benefits (e.g., perhaps most important benefit of winning games) to any team are highest when the rest of the 84 scholarship players suck….which has historically been the case at State.

Moreover the good teams have more depth. When you replace a great QB with a good QB, you do not see the stark contrast that NC State fans witnessed when a Phillp Rivers is replaced with a Marcus Stone/Daniel Evans/Harrison Beck whom are then replaced by 2 NFL draft picks.

For those of you really closely follow Pack football…..what is wrong with Pete Thomas as our starter next season? I understand that Manny Stocker hasn’t played as well as Thomas so I don’t raise his name yet.

I read about these graduate transfers and many posters seem to write off our current QB talent in favor of ready-to-play QBs trying to pick a new school.

I’m a bit confused. Is Thomas not the 4-star QB he was in HS and early college?

McLendon….where have I heard that name before? I rarely follow Charlotte football even though live 20 miles south…Wonder why?

Not sure wht exectly it is, but judging from Coach’s comments over the last few weeks, he’s not happy with any of current QBs. Thus the search for a graduate transfer as a bridge to 2014 and Brissett.
