The “No Pressure” Road Trip – BC Weekend Preview

BCBanner

OK then.  So for a few weeks (at least) I’ve been dreading this series, as well as having to write this particular preview.  I haven’t exactly kept my good natured digs at BC and their prowess on the diamond to myself up until now and as such I’ve probably set it up such that karma will come back to bite the Pack big time this weekend.

And we all know how easily NCStateSh!t can work its way into places where it has no business anyway, so this weekend has me a bit nervous to be honest.

But since I believe in calling it like I see it, I won’t now go into the “Hey, BC isn’t all that bad after all” mode just to curry favor with the baseball Gods.  That would be disingenuous.  Plus there’s really no way to put perfume on this particular pig.  If that jinxes us and we drop 2 out of 3 in Chestnut Hill because of it, then so be it.

The Pack is playing pretty good ball right now having won seven straight and nine of their last ten.  Incidentally, this ten game stretch just happens to coincide with Trea Turner’s return from his ankle injury.

During that stretch, State has won two straight conference series, including last weekend’s sweep of VT to up their record to 25-10, 8-7 in conference, and move within striking distance of 1st place FSU (2gb) and 2nd place Clemson (1gb) in the Atlantic Division as the second half of the conference season comes into view.

Maryland and Wake are both still tied for 4th, and are both also fading fast, now six games behind division leader FSU, and four back of the 3rd place Wolfpack.

And then there’s BC.  So let’s do this I guess.

bc-logoBoston College Eagles

6-26 (0-14 ACC; 6th ACC Atlantic)
2012: 21-34 (10-20; 6th ACC Atlantic)

Please let me preface the rest of this by saying I’m really kinda tired of piling on BC and I’ll be glad when this preview, and this weekend for that matter, is overwith.  I actually feel for BC and their players.  There’s not much that’s less fun than trudging through a season as badly as they have thus far, and knowing how bad you are.  After this weekend I’ll be pulling hard for BC to turn things around.

But this weekend they must be destroyed.

So, here goes nothing (Don’t worry, this won’t take long)….

At The Plate

The Eagles are indisputably bad at the plate, both for average and power.  They’re batting only .207 as a team and have hit only 8 HRs all season.  They strike out a lot and don’t steal bases well.

They’re averaging only 3.22 runs per game.

BC has no hitters in the .300+ range (seriously…none are even close) so let’s take a look at a couple of their “highlight” guys I suppose.

John Hennesy (#10, Jr, 3B/2B) leads the Eagles in avg. (.268) and runs scored (13) and is second in RBIs (11).

Chris Shaw (#3, Frosh, OF/1B) leads the team in HRs (4) and RBIs (13) but bats only .147.

BC’s biggest basestealing threats are Tom Bourdon (#7, Jr, CF) with 4 in 4 attempts; and Gabriel Hernandez (#23, Frosh, 3B) with 5 out of 5.

In The Field

As if BC’s offense wasn’t depressing enough, they have pitching to match.  Their team ERA is 6.69 and they’re giving up an average of 7.03 runs per game.  Opponents are batting .303 against them.  The semi-bright spots for BC’s staff are that they’ve not yielded as many HRs as one might think, having given up only 16 on the year; and they don’t hurt themselves (at least not too much) with an inordinate number of BBs.

BC’s scheduled starters for the weekend are:

Hunter Gordon (#26, Sr, RHP) – 0-3, ERA 3.52, 23 IP, 13 Ks, 5 BBs, 0 HRs, .281 against avg.

Eric Stevens (#22, Jr, RHP) – 0-7, ERA 5.76, 45.1 IP, 11 Ks, 20 BBs, 3 HRs, .351 against avg.

Andrew Chin (#28, Frosh, LHP) – 1-7, ERA 4.95, 36.1 IP, 28 Ks, 20 BBs, 1 HR, .303 against avg.

BC is a bit below average defensively with a .956 team fldpct.

As I mentioned a few days ago, the Pack will be trying to avoid becoming the first conference team this season to NOT sweep BC.  This is at least slightly misleading as BC has played all but one conference series on the road this year (Clemson swept them in Chestnut Hill last weekend).

Nonetheless, anything short of a series win would be a huge disappointment this weekend, even on the road.  Losing 2 out of 3 (or God forbid worse) would be very difficult to stomach and might make for some broken household items that I’ll have to replace.

That being said, despite how weak BC has been up to this point, it’s still baseball and anything can happen.  I just hope it doesn’t happen this weekend.  With Duke visiting FSU and Wake at Clemson this weekend, the Pack just needs to try to avoid losing any ground in a weekend when they are facing the league’s weakest opponent.

Anything else is gravy.

    LOL…I hear that’s easily correctable.

Surprised to see Wilkins come out in the 8th.

That’s the one thing I hate about having to keep up via gametracker…they don’t have a running pitch count, and I lost track after the 2nd. Any idea?

I guess now that basketball is over (and my sporting event choices have thus narrowed) I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and pay for the subscription on Gopack so I can listen to the radio broadcasts and get the occasional home video broadcast when not on ESNP3.

EDIT – Nevermind…that’s something else I hate about gametracker, they don’t always register subs and pitching changes in a timely fashion. Looks now like Orwig pitched the entire 8th.

  3. Wufpacker 04/13/2013 at 6:27 PM #

    Well that was better.

Pack takes game two 6-2 to sweep the DH. Go for the gravy tomorrow.

The DH sweep will allow the Pack to keep pace with FSU since Duke is being no help whatsoever…FSU up 7-1 in the 8th. Clemson/Wake about to get underway.

  4. Wufpacker 04/13/2013 at 7:05 PM #

OK, now I see that for some reason the Sunday FSU/Duke game is listed as cancelled and they appear to be doing a DH today as well.

Devils must have an early curfew tomorrow or something. Hopefully they can get the ‘Noles in the nightcap tonight.

EDIT – Just checked weather, forecast rain for Tallahassee tomorrow must be the reason for them going double today. Still, it’s funnier to blame it on Duke wanting to get home early.

BIG seven innings from Ryan Wilkins – & four Ks to go along w/a nice pitching line.

  6. Wufpacker 04/13/2013 at 7:21 PM #

Indeed. Would be nice if he could continue to be a reliable weekend #2.

Three comments from listening to the game yesterday on KNC:

    1. Amerson/Leslie/Rodon: is there a pattern here, or what? I guess at least one will be returning to school next year.

    2. Winning is nice, but it would sure be nice to have some pop in our bats. I believe we scored in 4 out of 18 innings yesterday, against probably one of the weakest teams we see all year, in or out of conference.

    And finally……

    3. Gawdalmighty is Gary Hahn horrific. He continually makes the regular minor gaffes, but during the broadcast yesterday he made about a dozen whoppers that just make you wonder. He must have asked for the trip to Boston or something, but you couldn’t script it anymore inept.

  8. Wufpacker 04/14/2013 at 11:46 AM #

Please don’t ever mention Rodon in the same breath as either Leslie or Amerson again. Seriously…never, ever, ever.

You should be flogged for that.

And there was never any question as to whether Rodon was coming back next year.

  9. ncsslim 04/14/2013 at 11:54 AM #

“And there was never any question as to whether Rodon was coming back next year.”

Obviously, or he probably wouldn’t have returned this year. But, I don’t think the comparison is that far out of line to date. Hopefully that changes. As opposed to the other two, his team is picking him up and giving him a chance to redeem himself. Again, hopefully he takes advantage of that opportunity.

“But, I don’t think the comparison is that far out of line to date.”

    Very sorry to hear that.

    ncsslim:

    1. Not necessarily. 😉

    2. I hear ya, brother…

    3. is Gary Hahn horrific? Yes. He is.

  12. Wufpacker 04/14/2013 at 1:55 PM #

Now would be a great time for some of that pop to arrive.

  13. Wufpacker 04/14/2013 at 2:16 PM #

Well, not sure I’d call that “pop” exactly, but I’ll take it.

    Hopefully it’ll be enough.

  14. Wufpacker 04/14/2013 at 2:44 PM #

Wouldn’t be State if we didn’t make it interesting.

Pack wins 3-2, gets the sweep. Get the hell out of Chestnut Hill and be happy to head back south.

Awesome outing by the freshman lefty Stone though. Six innings of no hit ball ought to earn you the win.

  15. DC_wolf 04/14/2013 at 2:54 PM #

Trea Turner single-handedly manufacturing offense w/some small ball in the top of the eighth, driving in the tying run & scoring as well. >whew!< the pressure's off… 😉

Edit: turns out the tying run actually scored on a throwing error, but it was apparently a tricky bunt put down by Turner that started things rolling in the eighth… Congrats on 10-in-a-row, fellas!

  16. vtpackfan 04/14/2013 at 5:56 PM #

Really impressed by Brad Stone, and seem to get the feel he has got big Mo going for him. Only a Freshman , and as a LH , gives us a nice weekend bookend with Rodon.

Question. Brett Wiiliams sighting anyone? Do YouTube highlights garner this amount of importance to the day to day roster

Batting .156. This weekend, against the worst pitching we will see all season, he rocked a one hit-8 K, performance. Avent sure loves his defense up the middle, always has and will. Just love how Williams is always penciled as either lead off of clean up.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 04/14/2013 at 6:27 PM #

^Yes, Williams is important to the lineup (whether he is on the bench or playing, he will be on the ROSTER). He’s still one of the best 6-7 hitters on the team despite the numbers (it’s called a slump) and is a superior defensive outfielder.

You failed to note the .156 batting average is for ACC play.

BC does not have the worst pitching State has seen all season.

Williams struck out 6, not 8 times as you indicated in your comment. (Which, since folks seem to like to edit their misguided rants when corrected, I took a screen shot of for posterity).

If BC is so god awful, why credit Stone? Doesn’t suit your rant of the day, I suppose.

Back to the hitting- virtually noone hit this weekend- ask anyone how much fun it is to hit in weather like that.

Can’t you enjoy a win and a winning streak without manufacturing bulls$#@ to moan about?

  18. Wufpacker 04/14/2013 at 9:32 PM #

    LMAO….now it’s a party 😀
