Hokie Game Day Thread

The Pack has had a week for Brown to heal up and get back into game shape. Hopefully it also gives Buckets and Purvis a chance to get mentally back in the game. Thanks to the ACC I have no desire to watch ACC basketball outside of the Pack so I have not seen VT play. I am assuming we will see another slow it down slug fest. I am expecting the Pack to end up 11-7 although after the last game I am a little concerned about that prediction.

I am going to go on a short rant here. The ACC needs to change the way it is reffing games. They need to stop this slow it down, grabbing, holding, painful to watch “defensive” style that seems to have taken hold in the ACC. You will not find a bigger basketball fan than I but, as I said, I do not watch ACC basketball because it is so boring. There is no need to change the rules, just call the rules that are in the books now. Stop the hand checking. Stop the hard hedging in which the forward rides the player to the midcourt line. Stop the grabbing when a player cuts (see Wood, Scott). Stop the sumo wrestling they allow for rebounds. My first and second grade teams play by the rules better than the ACC games.

By the way, did I mention it was boring? They are killing college basketball.

WAC: Nice catch, Hayes. Don’t ever fucking do it again.

Ok… I watched this game and kept my mouth shut….

I was half right in my predictions….
‘Cuz’ did better… ‘Nervous’ is still… nervous or something….
    Pack won… Holes won too…

Just one question…. “How does Tyler NOT get credit for at least one assist ??? “

I can’t believe that game didn’t kill me. Had to blow off posting as I moved around the living room trying to find a spot with good mojo.

How many lives does this cat of a hoops squad have? Losing today or last Sunday woulda killed us.

  4. FunPack 02/16/2013 at 4:02 PM #

Well. We certainly are exciting, aren’t we.

  5. FunPack 02/16/2013 at 4:03 PM #

Also, kudos to VT for playing out of their freaking minds.

GAWolf: We’ll win out, but I won’t call them in game anymore. As much as I enjoyed the OT, I need to get some work done, and losing the 15 minutes it took to reach the inevitable W is inconvenient. Can’t have that happening again.

  7. Wufpacker 02/16/2013 at 4:05 PM #

Say what you will about VT being last place, but they are a solid team and played pretty well today, especially considering some of the “pull ’em outta your bunghole” shots they threw up that went down.

Despite some issues here and there we showed a lot of composure and got the W. We’ve won two of these types of games in a row now. Getting better at playing against teams trying to muck us up and that’s a good thing. Keep learning and moving toward March.

I take back everything bad I ever said years ago about the refs in the Jaycee Park junior league (except for the smug red-headed guy – he was awful). At $25/game, those guys were far more sound with the whistle than ACC refs. Hell, they never missed a lane violation.

And we gotta get this background turned off…please.

F’IN Lo Brown. Best Wolfpacker since Hodge. Top 10 all time?

Speaking of F’IN. F the ‘officials’ and F va tech.

“Also, kudos to VT to playing out of their freaking minds.”

Is that it? How is it every bottom dweller does that with us? I don’t think so. This was not a good win. This game only had potential as a bad loss. I just can’t understand this team. I will never understand this team. I am actually looking foward to next year. I want a new team. There is something wrong with this one and it does not seem fixable. Bad karma. Ghosts helping sh1tty teams beat or play magnificent against us? Lazy? Stupid? We went OT with 2-9 dead last VT at our place. The crowd sounded good. Not their fault. We have to sit here and (in the back of our minds)wonder how our team is going to blow a 2 possesion lead with possesion under 30 seconds left…and we damn sure almost did. Something is wrong.

  13. WeAreCured 02/16/2013 at 4:19 PM #

That was on me, coach13. I called it early, and the State Sh*t Gods shamed me with OT as a warning not to do it again.

It’s poor defense, plain and simple. Hands down, lackadaisical junk. That, and a plethora of stupid things every game, such as goal tends, bouncing passes through legs and out of bounds, etc. They have more than their fair share of boneheaded plays every single game, and to top it all off, I honestly believe that the bounces do go the other teams’ way more often than not.

  14. highstick 02/16/2013 at 4:19 PM #

We play no defense. Lazy as shit.

    Ditto!!

  15. TMD11 02/16/2013 at 4:20 PM #

Other teams destroy Va Tech……but not us…we cannot play ANY DEFENSE. It’s like is this team ever going to learn to play some defense…????

  16. WeAreCured 02/16/2013 at 4:22 PM #

Even so, I’m glad it happens against teams we are still able to beat. There has to be good things to come in order to average out all of the bad things that have already happened. Hopefully, our good bounces arrive when all of the other teams, like Miami, start having their bad bounces come back around. Strategy!

    coach step off the ledge

  18. TMD11 02/16/2013 at 4:23 PM #

If we COULD play defense we wouldn’t have lost 4 of the 7 times we did lose. THIS TEAM HAS to play some defense. It is SOOOOOO simple. HELLO?

  19. theghost 02/16/2013 at 4:27 PM #

Pack just doesn’t play smart. It’s like we still can’t shake the weave and heave mentality, even in the high post O. VT has one player, and he ain’t big – why aren’t we picking and running him to death on the defensive end? Why aren’t we crashing the boards? Why aren’t we pounding it inside? CJ goes inside twice, gets two straight fouls. Why don’t we keep going at him?

Sorry Rick not feeling the sunshine or seeing the rainbow.

Another of those “survive and advance” games. In stretches I saw some excellent defense, some no defense, some excellent offense, some worse than bad offense and a few missed free throws at crucial moments. I thought Lewis played a very good game as did Wood. Excellent stretches from Howell, Leslie and Brown. TJ also has some excellent stretches.
I also saw Leslie make what may have been the bonehead play of the year with his tendency to goal tend.
In the end I saw a team that while not playing great guns for 40 minutes played good enough to win. I also saw lack of a call by the refs that was material to the end of regulation. That last basket by VT should have been disallowed.
The one take away is this type of game is likely to be what the team faces in the NCAAT.

What shou scare the hell out of us is that I think they are on
only doing what they are asked to do. Coach voting on about bad bounces in post game… funny how many bad bounces happen when u don’t box out

It was necessary for me to digest this horrific pile of a conference basketball game today. A few points:

    1) Our defense was not very good today, but I believe I’ve come to expect that because our guys are willing/have been coached to not play hard on the defensive side in order to avoid foul trouble. I think that was the clear case today, especially with CJ inside against Raines.

    2) Wood (VT’s new career scorer) hit two of his five threes on absolute crap bounces. Also, it’s a trend that visiting teams shoot pretty well in our building, even dating back to pre-Lowe coaches.

    3) The officials were terrible, and this comes after a game where we earn 40+ free throw attempts. The fact that a terrible missed call ended up tying the score in order to force overtime was the culmination of the worst crew we’ve had work our game since the BC game to open the season. The TF on CJ was the right call, even though he was fouled at least twice on the play, and fouled again going to the basket later, which might have induced another. The repeated instances of reviewing the monitor (to check Zo’s three, which was changed; to change the clock before Wood was fouled giving VT an additional half-second or so happening AFTER Wood had already attempted the free throws (missing the first)) all occurred in the 2nd half and were completely unnecessary, giving VT additional timeouts they didn’t have. The foul on Richard Howell late for going under-the-front was the worst call I’ve seen since the Charging call on Warren against Miami (which oddly enough awarded them two free throws, which isn’t supposed to happen)

Even though my previous post belies the next statement: we advanced. Time to move on.
