State loses to Wake.

Ugly.

After trailing 47-35 at half and then 53-42 with 18:09 to play, Wake trounced State with an aggressive, efficient 40-19 surge over the next 14:19 and led 82-72 at the under four-minute TV timeout. State had multiple opportunities to tie (and even win) in the final minute, but missed three-of-four free throws and then missed two field goals (on one of which Leslie was clearly fouled, no call).

This just hasn’t been a good team since beating Duke (and it certainly hasn’t played with any consistency). Blame the officials if you want, but Wake was clearly the better team tonight and deserved to win. And that’s damn tragic.

Box Score (ESPN).

Looks like the old pack showed up the last 3 games. I was looking at the bench for Sid. Say what you want about refs and scheduling this all comes down to coaching or lack of. CJ should be benched in favor of TJ.

wolflane74 – You hit it. This is the same old team, just a little better talent. They can rise up and beat anyone, but won’t. They will lose more they shouldn’t than win those they should.

Gott needs to right the ship. Something has clearly gone wrong since Duke. We lost twice and squeaked by a weak GT team who basically gave us the game.

What was the key factor in the Maryland and WF games? I think we saw excellent coaches on the other bench. Last night when we went to the 2-3 zone, WF calmly just went to their ‘zone action’ and proceeded to easily score on three consecutive posessions. They knew exactly what to do.

This is very discouraging, but we Pack fans have to expect it.

Saturday – UNC by 15 at the half, UNC by 5 at the end. Career day by Bullock.

We got jammed by the refs last night, no doubt. But the shear amount of utterly uncontested lay-ups in the second half by Wake is simply inexcusable.

Also, the shear amount of missed close proximity shots by us is inexcusable.

This team still has the ability to get out-worked on any given night and for some reason, like most State teams through the years, we either find a way not to win or find a way to lose at the end of the game.

All those who said they couldn’t find 5 losses for us on the schedule this year fell victim once again to the hype. We will absolutely lose more than 5 games. Depth is a problem, of course, but so is consistency. We don’t have it, in virtually any aspect of the game, and it’s unlikely to magically appear out of thin air.

    This.

“Finally Scott Wood is a huge defensive liability. He is slower than most other players on the court. He cheats a lot leaving players open. Fact is we are a much better defesive team when he isn’t on the floor. Offensively not so much.”

I was at the game, and I can remember at least 6 times that Wood failed to switch of a screen leading to either a back door cut, or easy pass/bucket in the key. I am no Wooden and I could see it coming.

Can anyone confirm this Twitter fiasco? It is being reported De Thaey tweeted that this is what happens when you have a terrible coach that is a great recruiter. The kicker – it is said that TJ Warren re-tweeted it.

This whole team is a huge defensive liability. Wood might be the worst, but everyone is pretty bad most of the time. What kills me is that the times that everyone becomes motivated to play D this team is very very good. I guess most of the blame should fall squarely on the coaching staff for not getting the team to step up on that end of the floor, but some blame absolutely needs to fall on the players as well. Sometimes I feel like Zo is a turnstile at the top of the key, because he gets taken off the dribble so often. CJL can be found out of position when the penetration does happen because he is looking for the block all the time. To me that is just effort. Even in my limited basketball playing experience if some guy was killing me off the dribble – I would back off some and force him to his off hand. Sometimes you have to understand the things you can do well and the things you can’t do well to improve across the board. I just have a feeling these guys think so highly of their skills that they don’t listen to the coaches and don’t understand their weaknesses.

We are not a very smart basketball team nor do we communicate well on the defense. We have looked very lazy the last 3 games-lazy with all facets of the game. I thought we played well as a team when Leslie and Wood left in the first half, at least offensively.

NEWS FLASH- Devin Thomas is left handed. (Not very smart on our part!)

I lost count at 18 points missed at the rim that was only in the first half.

Wulfpack, it’s true. De Thaey’s tweet is still up, but Warren took down his retweet.

That’s what happens when you’re a great recruiter, but a terrible coach!

    Thomas De Thaey ‏@de_thaeyGOPACK
Y’all mad at me now because I’m just telling you guys the truth…LOL! That’s what happens when you’re blind to the facts!

    Thomas De Thaey ‏@de_thaeyGOPACK
And trust me I love all of my former teammates!! I got nothing but respect for my bro’s!

The heck with TDT is all I have to say. As for TJ…stop using the Twitter. Can’t stand it. Wish our athletic department would ban its use by players.

  11. wolfpackdawg 01/23/2013 at 10:20 AM #

It appears to be a combo of bad coaching and laziness by the players…..lack of discipline? Something is very wrong for sure.

  12. Khan 01/23/2013 at 10:23 AM #

“The kicker – it is said that TJ Warren re-tweeted it.”

    Well that certainly is discouraging.

I felt as bad about the loss as the next guy, but think about it for a second. If someone had said you could start the season on January 26th playing UN* with a record of 15-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC and a top 25 ranking, and not have to play the first 19 games, would you have taken it? I sure would have! I would I have assumed the losses were Michigan, UConn, Duke and Maryland, yes. But, I still would have taken the record. Does it stink that we lost to Oklahoma State and Wake instead of UConn and Duke, yes, but is it the end of the world, no. We were never a top 10 team to start the year and we all knew it. But we are so far ahead of where we have been, it is refreshing. Do we need to correct some consistent issues, absolutely, but come on, we still have a chance to have a special season. Anyone remember our record after 19 games in 82-83? (12-7 overall, 4-4 ACC) http://www.jmpressley.net/ncstate/schedules/1982-83.html

  14. JasonP 01/23/2013 at 10:30 AM #

LOL! TDT – you mad bro?

How’s that bball career coming? Must have been bad coaching not to allow you to jack up 3’s every time you sniffed the court.

Coach Gottfried might not make the best decisions all the time, not many coaches do, but he gets the team prepared better than anyone we’ve had in the last 20 years. Losses like this sting but that’s the game. Just hope we can get right by Saturday.

  15. Khan 01/23/2013 at 10:34 AM #

I don’t care about TDT tweeting it. There are all kinds of reasons that he would tweet something inaccurate. But if Warren retweeted it, then it is concerning, unless he was just trying to show what a jack hole TDT is.

Our defense allows more penetration than a Louisiana whore on a busy Saturday night.

Vandy was one of our best players last night.

Is anybody else having problems with the forums? I click on “forums” and type in the web addy (www.statefansnationforums.com) and it keeps taking me to the SFN main page. I’ve tried with Chrome and Explorer.

To those blaming Lo Brown please stop. Lo had 10 assists and 3 TOs. That kind of assist to TO ratio gets you a big fat bonus at the next level. Which means before his charge and strip TOs he was 10/1.

If your point guard is 10/1 you should be up 10…not down 10. He tried to take over because we put him in that position. Same thing that happened at Maryland. He had 2 blocks, 2 steals and got his hands on a half dozen balls. How many deflections did he get only to have one of our players bend over at the waist to pick it up, our other 4 players take off, some freshman for Wake slide in and turn it into a lay up?

Coach…call a time out, look in the faces of your players and see who wants to play. I hate armchair coaches…but Good Lord.

And in true NC State fashion, this twitter thing has already been picked up by the media.

Can’t get on the forums either. I was able to get on early this morning and saw 7 straight PAGES of hijacked threads. We are under attack, boys!

  20. Pack Leader 01/23/2013 at 10:49 AM #

Print it out, plaster it on EVERY locker, put it in the hallways & in dorm rooms… Even former teammates are turning on us now…

    Its STATE vs the world…..

    Play Defense or go home

  21. Pack Leader 01/23/2013 at 10:51 AM #

Also, has anyone thought maybe TJ retweeted that idiots tweet as motivation???

  22. Wulfpack 01/23/2013 at 10:54 AM #

Somebody check and see if there is some angry guy out in Belgium hijacking our forums.

  23. pakfanistan 01/23/2013 at 10:55 AM #

No, because it’s simple to add a couple of letters and show that’s your intent, rather than straight retweeting it.

Also, he’s since deleted it, which looks kinda guilty.

  24. Gowolves 01/23/2013 at 11:42 AM #

I saw this type of effort in the Clemson game. I was assured that I should just accept the win and move on. It’s the ACC, the games are always tight and the seaon is grind. All valid points but that was really just ignoring the BIG problem. The defense is real bad.

They are currently ranked in the high 200″s in team defense in the country. Thats bad. The bright side if they can move up say 20 spots in that ranking the defense will be much better becasue it will take a lot to move up that much.
