So O’brien only has a winning ACC record vs. unc-ch, UVA and Miami? Terrible.

and a 5-4 record vs a God awful Big Least.

His 1-14 road record against division foes is the stat from above that’s the proverbial nail in the coffin…

  3. Wulfpack 11/26/2012 at 4:41 PM #

    As average as it gets.

    The definition of mediocrity.

WV, you deserve a raise for putting these stats together every week after the season we just had…

You certainly put more effort into it than, well – you know who.

Interesting set of numbers and data. Some of the LIGHT BLUE fans are commenting about how we go through FB coaches faster than (fill in the blank). Did a little pulling of data….assuming that Wiki is correct.

My criteria was to go BACK to the LAST coach that was NOT fired. That was Dick Sheridan and Mack Brown. Then, on a percentage basis, normalize the data.

    UNC
Average Coaching Tenure – 3.5 years
    Winning Percentage – 41%
    Bowl Bids – 50% or 7 in 14 years

    NCSU
Average Coaching Tenure – 6.7 years
    Winning Percentage – 54%
    Bowl Bids – 60% or 12 in 20 years

I PROBABLY should have included Larry Fedora’s numbers, but since he is still there, I did not.

Based on what I remember, I would also guess that the HC FB at UNC was paid at least 25% MORE than NCSU since the Ram’s Club kicks in and the media money is more.

    Interesting….

^Nice work, ‘ROO. The head-to-head also bears that out: since 2000 the Pack & Heels have played 13 times w/ NCSU holding a 8-5 advantage.

Nothing like some data to put things into perspective. TOB does epitomize mediocrity in his results.

Wish him and staff the best. However, a change was in order and I think it will bring some excitement to the program.

There was too much downside risk of another average or worse season and no hope for any real excitement in the football program. I had rather fail trying to excel than accept mediocrity for fear of failure.

Come on guys, have some respect. That 8-0 mark against FCS opponents is stellar.

Thanks, WV and Roo. Great info here. Looking forward to being armed with it the next time I hear someone yapping.

    DCWolf,

If you look at the NCSU v UNC records back through the 1998 season, that includes the first year under Coach Torbish (sp?). Mack (Hook’em Horns – for how long….?) Brown left in 1997. SO, since 1998, the record is NCSU – 8 and UNC – 7. Barely an edge, but still an edge and we certainly spent less for coaches during that period.

You have to give Coach O’Brien credit for 5 of this wins.

Great stuff, thank you. Already hearing the noise from the peanut gallery – this will help.
