NC State starts season #3 in Sports Illustrated’s power rankings

The excitement officially begins in less than three hours!

So, it is fitting that SI’s power rankings just came out. CLEARLY Sports Illustrated doesn’t know what Lee Fowler, Jim Oblinger, Herb Sendek, Jeff Goodman, Gary Parrish, and the rest of the world knows — it is impossible to win at NC State!! Right?

Is it bad that the first thing I did when this page came up was check the spelling of WOLFPACK??

really want to see Wood utilize the pump fake more often. He could get the defender in the air EVERY time…

  5. Prowling Woofie 10/12/2012 at 3:29 PM #

Wood needs to be at the free throw line at least 150 times this season. If he’s not getting at least 5 FT’s a game, he’s not using his talent to its fullest.

This is an experience with which I am not familiar. I don’t know how to process all of these praise and accolades without my pack pessimism creeping in.

Nice! Can’t wait for the season to start. GO PACK!!

I just know at any moment I am going to wake up and we are going to be the sucky team that only beats UNC and Duke on a fluke. I keep trying to pinch myself and wake up. Would someone please unplug me from the matrix. Morphius??

I hope we can live up to the expectations…..they seem to get higher by the day. Don’t get me wrong I like the limelight just not the fall from it…

The national media has clearly taken notice and are giving us our due. Likewise, I hope we can deliver. This is amazing stuff.

I need something to look forward to after my Reds blew it yesterday…Go Pack!

Having a nationally respected coach, among both his coaching and media peers, is invaluable. Nice change of pace.

Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick, will everyone please shut the f*** up about this team? Don’t you know what happens when an NC State team is praised preseason? Every positive word physically weakens ligaments and joints. It causes unforeseen problems with chemistry. Can’t someone just dismiss us as a flash in the pan? Doyel? Caulton? Where are you when we need you?

Do not get too caught up in all the euphoria. As Jimmy V. stated time and time again, the ACC is a “bump and grind” throughout the season. In the 80’s, many games between ACC teams (especially State vs. the blues) were nail biters. It appears as if we are headed into that territory again. Those of us who have experienced this position understand there will be close games we win and a few that we lose. In the end, tournament seating is all that matters. So when our team has a close loss or even a WTF game, do not lose sight of the prize.

Wood will get as many looks at the bucket as he’s willing to work for. If he busts his ass to run the baseline, cut off of screens, and yes – pump fake – he’ll get all the looks we want him to get. All that kept his numbers down last year was his tendency to stand motionless on the wing… I could’ve guarded him a lot of the time (and I’m short, white, and 40).

In all seriousness, this team is perfectly constructed and is placed appropriately. Stud seniors who stayed. Stud juniors who stayed. And a true top-notch batch of freshmen. That’s how you win championships. Doesn’t mean we will, but we at least have the tools to do it.

Let’s have fun for a year – gonna be retooling a bit next year.

NCSU84, How in the world does where you are going to sit at the tournament have any bering on the Wolfpack?
    HAHA

And I’m guessing the MSG game vs UConn’s gonna be a lot of fun – tix in hand, hotel & air already paid for. Only expenses will be taxis, food, and beer. 🙂

I thought the same thing as Hoop, ha.

I actually put more on this on the coaching staff. He did really well last year when we’d run stuff to get him some open 15-18 footers.

He obviously works very hard on his game – my guess is that he works as hard, if not harder on his game than anyone on the team.

Watching the 3 point shooting contest last night – he’s the only one on the team who doesn’t have miserably lazy or unorthodox form – aside from Lorenzo Brown and DaThaey. He’s also the smartest player on our team.

As others have pointed out – there’s certainly a lot for him to improve upon. Still, I don’t think we want Wood to be our primary option on offense. Strictly speaking – his role is to keep guys from doubling on CJ and Lorenzo.

Of note last night is that Richard Howell really struggled offensively against taller opponents – again.

It looks like DaThaey is gaining some confidence. That’s critical – I think he can fill Painter’s role nicely. I don’t think his 15 footer is as automatic – but he’s got a better overall game offensively, and rebounds his position well.

Contrary to what the talking heads were saying last night – going into this season – we’ve got more depth, and should be better offensively. Defensively, we’ve got some question marks. Lewis is going to take a while to get there defensively…he’ll be attacked every time he’s on the court because of simple physics. Offensively, even at this stage – he’s a step up from Alex Johnson. But Johnson was a man last year – Tyler’s still got a lot of mental growing to do.

at 6’8 1/2 and with his style of play, Howell will probably never be able to score consistently against taller defenders…fortunately 1) he is our 5th option 2) there aren’t many 6’11 + guys in the ACC…

I briefly listened to Gold an Ovies on the drive home last night. Why? I have no idea. Anyway, Idiot #1 (Ovies) was commenting how the media are reeling in their expectations of NC Sate for this year, and actually cited Goodman and Parrish at CBS sports as his measuring stick. Never mind the SI ranking. Then Idiot # 2 said he was voting for Duke to win the ACC. Among his reasons, Amile Jefferson is going to be a difference maker. Has he seen Jefferson play or even just seen him?

Regarding Duke, I have only one thing to say. Their PG is Quinn Cook, ours is Lorenzo Brown.

“Among his reasons, Amile Jefferson is going to be a difference maker.”

Jefferson isn’t going to start. I doubt he averages 15 minutes per game.

There may be other reasons to pick Duke, but that doesn’t seem like a good one.

“I briefly listened to Gold an Ovies on the drive home last night.”

Oh come now…you should all know by now that the dynamic douche-bag duo says what they say simply to stir the pot. If they went on about how great State is, they think they’d get no one talking about them. Ratings ratings ratings.

“NC State starts season #3 in Sports Illustrated’s power rankings”

I can sense NCState_Shit – aka THE FORCE – preparing a nice 4th place for the PACK.

Pre-season rankings? No thank you …
