UNC BOG panel discusses academic fraud behind closed doors

The N&O is reporting this afternoon that A UNC system BOG panel met for more than five hours behind closed doors, citing confidentiality and privacy issues.  The purpose of the meeting was reportedly to discuss UNC-CH’s current academic fraud issues…

CHAPEL HILL — A UNC Board of Governors panel met for more than five hours behind closed doors Wednesday in its review of the academic fraud case that has dogged UNC-Chapel Hill.

The panel gathered briefly with reporters present, but then went into closed session, citing state law that protects confidential personnel matters, information about the performance of public employees and attorney-client privilege.

Laura Fjeld, vice president and general counsel of the UNC system’s General Administration, was present at the meeting. The review group also cited federal law protecting the privacy of student educational records.

The panel will reconvene Thursday in what is expected to be mostly open deliberation.

Wednesday’s closed door meeting no doubt included discussion of two former employees thought to be at the center of the scandal in UNC-CH’s African and Afro-American studies department — Julius Nyang’oro, a former chairman and professor who was forced to retire in July, and Deborah Crowder, a former department manager who retired in 2009.

Thank goodness they met privately so as not to inadvertently violate FERPA.  No word yet if they were allowed to discuss Julius Peppers’ academic record based on transcripts which were already illegally made available to the public.

In short. The minute we stop talking about it is the moment the story dies. That’s what I was trying to get at. Carry on.

I’ll second this. I’ve only contributed two relatively unimpressive articles to SFN, but I got at least one comment along the same lines….”too much coverage of UNX….make us look bad”. I will repeat what I said then: I’ve lived through too much to just let it go. What I’m after is a level playing field. Once that happens, I will be glad to completely ignore everything associated with UNX.

I think you’re misinterpreting the spirit of GAWolf’s comment. But even if you’re not, it is at the very least misguided to imply that it is somehow elitist in nature.

    Three cheers, Lumpy.

And ’87 – I’ll ask for one more pound of flesh: Not only must the playing field be leveled, but I want to hear, see, read *NC admit that they prospered because of their cheating to keep players eligible. You can’t move forward until you admit the mistakes of the past….

I’m not going to pick fights with other pack supporters, so I really do applaud you for being very pro NC State in your efforts on this message chain. Let just agree to disagree on GAWolf’s comment. I feel it was a shitty thing to say to any supporter of NC State or reader of State Fans Nation, but whatever. We’ll all be better served to move on.

    Shout aloud to the men,
Who will play the game to win.
    We’re behind you,
    KEEP FIGHTING FOR STATE.

    Hold that line,
    Hold them fast,
We will reach victory at last
    We’re behind you
    KEEP FIGHTING FOR STATE.

    RISE UP TO THE FRAY,
    And let your colors wave,
Shout out for dear old NC State
    (Go State!)

    For where e’er we go,
We will let the whole world know,
    We’re behind you,
    KEEP FIGHTING FOR STATE.

If this were the middle of football or hoops season, the u*nc fraud saga wouldn’t get as much play. But when they’re making news in the middle of summer when nothing else is really happening, it gets magnified. Just the way it is.

I like the updates about the ‘Dump on the Hump’. Keep ’em coming!

Back in Feb 2012 Bill Friday had this to say in an interview with the Daily TarHeel:

DTH: How can UNC balance its desire to become more competitive in athletics while also maintaining its academic prestige?

BF: I knew of the work of (former) Athletic Director (Dick) Baddour. I worked very closely with him over the years and he’s built a very good foundation here. It was very, very disheartening, you know, when we got charged with these violations. But we’ve got to do like a very good institution does. If we are indeed found guilty, we will take our medicine and we will carry out the punishment and we will … never again commit actions like those.

The asshole owes an apology to the Valvano family for he never treated Valvano like he does old Dickie here. However he has never replied to any of my emails to him on his PBS contact page to discuss this issue.

I have got more than enough bandwidth to be both against unc and for nc state. I wil not tire of the anti unc articles until they are completely an thoroughly punished and the whole truth comes out.

Lumpy the preacherman. Preach on, brother.

In true NC State fashion we castrated ourselves days before the boom of ESPN. It really couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

wolfman: I’m hardly being elitist. Quite the opposite. We’ve explained countless times how all the guys who contribute to this blog have real jobs. We write for this thing because we love NC State and Wolfpack sports. We do it because we know people like us want to read it. If people don’t like what’s here, there’s a very simple solution. “Those people” can make their own blog, or they can go somewhere and pay for information/articles which would then entitle them to gripe… perhaps. It’s ridiculous for someone to come here and complain. It’s not elitist at all, it’s just rude on the part of the person coming here to consume a free product to bitch about it.

Sorry. Just being frank. Hopefully you can understand that. People who will complain about something that’s free just don’t understand enough about common decency to even try to explain to them why it’s silly. If they don’t get it, they never will. Sad but true. Sorry if I offended anyone, but frankly it’s offending for us guys who work 60 to 70 hours per week, take care of a family and kid(s), and do this in our spare time to read those people’s complaints about the content.

Point taken GA. I was wrong not heap on the admiration that I have for this site. I read it every day with intensity. My employer would be smart to block it like they have gmail. I appreciate the volunteers who put time into writing the content and administering the site. I see this as a voice for good in the NC State community.

I am an engineer, so conveying tone in writing is not a strength. Reread my comment with a Mickey Mouse’s voice in your head. It is just feedback.
