Yow 1, Twerps -7

Brett Friedlander (starnewsonline.com) has a nice piece about the improvements Debbie Yow has made at NC State but more importantly her vision and plan for making those improvements. There’s also a nice dig at the Twerps who are in a financial mess. While Maryland cuts sports, N.C. State looks forward with optimism under Yow

It’s a nice cherry on top to the sundae Daily Update posted about Setting a New Status Quo

The timing is completely coincidental, but nonetheless ironic.

On the same day Debbie Yow’s old school, Maryland, formally announced that it is dropping seven varsity sports in response to a severe athletic financial crisis, Yow’s current school N.C. State issued a five-year strategic plan for advancing the Wolfpack into the top echelon of ACC schools.

[snip]

The five-year plan announced Monday is the latest step forward in that effort. The 29-page document spells out seven strategic goals and objectives while providing a timetable for when they should be accomplished.

In addition to the obvious competitive improvement on both the playing field and in the classroom, which has already begun with a jump of 30 places in this year’s Directors’ Cup standings, the document spells out a specific plan to also bring about gains in the areas of fund-raising, allocation of money, staff retention and brand recognition.

Check out the article for a list of highlights from the document.

That’s quite a contrast to what’s going on at Maryland right now.

Yow’s replacement, Kevin Anderson, announced Monday that the school has eliminated its varsity programs in men’s and women’s swimming, men’s tennis, women’s water polo, cross-country, indoor track & field and cheer to help offset an athletic department deficit that is projected to reach more than $4 million this year.

Playing devil’s advocate here, but how much, if any, responsibility does Maryland’s current woes fall on Yow? I am a big fan of what she has done so far at State. In fact, she was key in getting me in touch with the right people at the University to get the license plate for State created here in South Carolina. I have read some things in the past that laid the blame for the twerps financial problems on her.

“but how much, if any, responsibility does Maryland’s current woes fall on Yow?”

That is exactly where I went when I first read this. I mean, she hasn’t been gone that long. I love what she is doing here but have heard she didn’t always have her fiscal house in order. Whether true or not is anyone’s guess.

While she was at Maryland, Yow tremendously reduced the budget deficit there, which had been climbing for a number of years prior to her arrival…

Getting rid of Fridge and Sweaty Gary, and then sucking at both sports, probably played a larger part in the revenue reduction !

  4. logarithm 07/03/2012 at 8:20 AM #

My understanding regarding Debbie’s spending in College Park was that they borrowed heavily against future earnings to try and do a number of the things she’s doing here in Raleigh, and then it didn’t pan out with the changing of the coaching guard for both revenue sports and a general lack of accomplishment for both. It’s a different market up there, without rivalries like we have to help fuel our continued investment into a football program rising above those rivals and a basketball program poised to claw its way to the top.

So far, the market and environment in Raleigh is more receptive to the kind of changes she’s making

I’d be very interested in a detailed description of Yow’s tenure at Maryland (and prior).

I’ve read both sides on her budget work at Maryland. I’ve read that she did great work with their budget and led Maryland out of a bad budget situation when she took over. However, I’ve also read that she set them up for the terrible situation they are in now by spending a lot on facility upgrades, including for non-revenue sports; going to 27 sports; and regularly drawing from their reserve fund in order to balance the budget annually until that fund was fully expended.

I’ve also read that their problems in recent years had to do to varying degrees with paying off Williams (did he get a payoff?) and Friedgen; hiring Turgeon and Edsall; poor attendance, especially in football; and a major decline in donations, including from a number of major donors. I’m not sure how much of those things, if true, relate to Yow vs. Anderson, and I’m not sure how much of those things are actually within the AD’s control/influence.

Can anyone give some details on these questions?

  6. tractor57 07/03/2012 at 8:32 AM #

As logarithm stated the dynamic is different in Raleigh. To this point I don’t see any borrowing against future revenue (or donations) but I do see a vision for the future. If the same was introduced under the previous administration I would thing total BS but to date there has been reason to believe the athletics program is moving forward.

Why don’t Maryland FANS have to take responsibility for their financial problems?

THEY are the ones who don’t contribute to their scholarship programs. They are the ones who don’t fill up their stadiums. They are the ones that don’t give more despite her building MULTIPLE SPORT NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

You can’t compare NC State to Maryland in a vacuum because you need to adjust for the financial heft that our rabid fans provide us.

So far Yow has done a fantastic job at NC State and her effort and energy have been amazing. Look at what she has accomplished in two years.

Comments aabove reflect my understanding of DY’s time at UMd. She inherited major financial problems and did manage to improve them. And, StateFans, I think you are absolutely correct about Twerp fans and “supporters.” AD’s can’t finance the department. It has to come from without mostly.

BTW as an aside, isn’t the LTR program that Foulup instituted essentially a scheme of borrowing against future (forced) revenues?

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/maryland-football-struggles-both-on-the-field-and-in-terms-of-revenue/2011/11/16/gIQAri1ZSN_story.html

This story really details the root cause of their money issues. Mainly, the sport that is supposed to be making the most money for them football, is actually dropped in profitability over 50% to only $1.8 mill. This is mainly due to the fact that attendance has plummeted and nobody is buying the suites that they built. By comparison, NC State made approx $11 mill profit from football. Basketball also saw declines to around $5 mill. By comparison NC State made around $6.5 mill

In addition, they noted that fundraising had fallen 40% from $15.3 to $9.1 mill.

This shows a picture of fans (alot of fans) not supporting their team by attending games. They are spending the reduced revenue that they have on the debt accumulated on the stadium expansions.

Was this DY’s fault. I don’t believe so. Almost every major program in the country was expanding their facilities in the early to late 2000’s. If you wanted to stay par with your peers, you had to and for most schools, the fans supported this. If anything, DY’s fault was building too many suites (CF only has 51 as opposed to 64 for Byrd). The problem for Maryland is that after they finished their improvements, nobody showed up to use them. This is on the Maryland fans for not supporting their team.

To add to the problem, the new AD made big personnel changes in FB and BB that cost them millions to make.

Wow, thanks for all the information, and great discussion. That settles any questions I had in my mind. I have been a fan of Yow and will continue to do so. Thanks for clearing it up.

Just a side note, my dad who is retired and living the good life in Florida (b/c NC is just too cold)had people over for their daily rotating happy hour, and was sporting his usual wolfpack gear. Someone asked him how could state let Ray Tanner get away, his immediate answer was FOUL UP FOWLER! He than began the saga of Fowler and how much better things are looking for the pack under D Yow.

  13. Alpha Wolf 07/03/2012 at 11:35 AM #

As goes football and men’s basketball, so goes an athletic department…usually.

NC State is lucky in that it updated facilities at a time when football was reaching upwards to its high-water mark under Chuck Amato. The Wolfpack Club has also had superior management for quite some time, and their role in the facilities upgrades is often not given its due credit. Under Bobby Purcell, some innovative financing plans and programs brought the younger alums deeper into the fold by giving them chances to finance seat licensing and the like. Finally, it helped that the program itself had a Philip Rivers and a number of other players like Mario Williams that helped bring the wins and the desire to be a part of it all.

Basketball did see a bit of a Renaissance under Herb, albeit one that ultimately divided the fanbase and set a level of unacceptable mediocrity. Rather than rehashing that tired old argument uselessly, it didn’t hurt that State returned to the NCAA tourney, even if Herb could never figure out the next step to make the program great. And love or hate the PNC Center, it also gave the program a showcase that will be a revenue generator like no other when the Pack does return to its rightful place in the top three or four of the ACC. Those 19,000-odd seats will be the tide that raises a lot of the other boats when they’re full more often than not.

Yow is the final piece. She brought leadership and with demands to excel with her. When they do, we will see that success will drive success and NC State will not have the same problems as Maryland’s.

  14. wardncsu 07/03/2012 at 11:42 AM #

I would add the caveat that continued success also depends on continued support for NC State. I know a lot of Maryland fans that have discontinued season tickets or going to games altogether for Football and basketball. This of course starves the athletic dept of funding and becomes a self fulfilling prophecy when you are in a dire financial situation.

Fan will have to continue to support NC State for us to maintain our financial standing.

Not one to suggest that all this DrDebLove is out of place…. I like the way she is doing her job in Rawlee.

Nevertheless, let’s all just remember that, in spite of what may or may not have happened, it was not a one-woman show in College Park then, nor is it a one-woman show in Rawlee now… From here at the beach, it appears that we have the best management TEAM we have had in a long time.

…. most people tend to learn from their past mistakes… especially in the area of finance. That enures to the benefit of the Wolfpack nation.

  16. Classof89 07/03/2012 at 12:21 PM #

Umm, wolf1975, you are aware that it was Todd Turner who let Tanner get away, not Lee Fowler? Turner was ineffective in a different sort of way.

  17. wolfpack95 07/03/2012 at 12:24 PM #

That’s some revisionist history, Wolf1975. Tanner was long gone before Fowler appeared. Todd Turner is the name forgotten. The tandem of Turner and Fowler is the epitomy of mediocrity, at best.

Our football record is as follows:
    2011 8-5
    2010 9-4
    2009 5-7 (lost to Duke 49-28)
2008 6-7 (lost Bowl game to Rutgers)
    2007 5-7 (lost to Maryland 37-0 @ home)
2006 3-9 (7 game losing streak to end the season)
For the last 12 years I have only missed one home game. I also try to go to 1 away game per year. We are cursed and blessed with “hope beyond hope” when it comes to supporting the Pack. During the losing seasons we still buy tickets and show our support.
During the 2011 Maryland game when we were down 41 – 21. The Wolfpack Nation was still there in the stadium. Other fans (UNCheat) would have been long gone. The only exception was the 2009 Duke Game. I left 2 minutes early to throw up. Otherwise….

We are fans! We support our teams through thick and thin. We may get down, but we are never out. Maryland fans on the other hand are fair weather fans.

  19. Lunatic Fringe 07/03/2012 at 4:07 PM #

wardncsu already stole some of my thunder with his posts above including the article link.

NC State’s fanbase (as bad as the media like to make us out to be) is simply more reliable. The dedication that leads us to being called “lunatics” is the same that pays our ticket prices/donations year in and year out. Additionally, I simply think Yow is surrounded by a better “team” here at NC State than she had at Maryland.

I do believe Maryland’s fans have taken for granted their success and now that tough times (economical & on the field) have hit that they take their proverbial ball (aka money) & go home leaving the university in a worse position. Yow is an easy scapegoat though they quickly forget all the good she did for the university.

For instance, I am fascinated to see how Maryland’s upcoming negotiations will go with Under Armor. Yow negotiated the following the last times out:

2004 – First school to wear UA (Maryland alum was creator); 2.4M 5/year + plus couple extra benefits (football only); It was triple what they were getting from Nike

2008 – 17.5M 5/year deal which at the time (still may…not sure) exceeded Nike’s yearly payout with Oregon

It doesn’t take a lot of gray matter to figure out just how bad Maryland’s football program is screwed up after looking at their uniforms this past season.

And that says a lot about their athletic department.

“Mainly, the sport that is supposed to be making the most money for them football, is actually dropped in profitability over 50% to only $1.8 mill. This is mainly due to the fact that attendance has plummeted and nobody is buying the suites that they built. ”

Luxury suites aren’t bought by season ticket holders, they are bought by corporate types, who want to wine and dine big wigs.

In Raleigh, there isn’t a lot else going on in the fall, so corporations, who want to wine and dine folks end up at Carter-Finley.

In the greater D.C./Baltimore area you just have to wait a day and can take your big wigs to a Ravens or Redskins game, plus the Wizards, Capitols, Senators and Orioles can cut into the corporate demand for luxury suites, since those seasons overlap with college football.

Luxury suites are needed to boost revenue these days, but I don’t know if Debbie Yow miscalculated in building those, since the people who can afford them are already spending the money on several other professional sports.

  22. eas 07/05/2012 at 10:53 AM #

Let’s no forget Yow was basically forced to pay out BIG money to an under achieving BB & FB program. When she tried to send them packing for not meeting expectations people had a fit. Gary Williams milked them pretty good and she could do nothing about it. There FB program was more interested in looking good than playing good as well…..

Just saying she had to spend a lot of money on things she did NOT want to.
