ACC in the MLB – Part II

ACC in the MLB – Part II

In this installment, we look at the 2012 MLB Draft and recent draft history of ACC teams, as well as some other stuff, including how the 2012 draft affects the Pack’s incoming baseball recruiting class.

After a very brief and quiet discussion in the comments section of our last installment, I got to wondering what was the easiest route I could take to shedding more light on whatever point I was trying to make. Rest assured, this is likely just a pointless follow up, and not the second installment of a pointless trilogy…but who knows?

Last time, I linked a piece from ACC Sports Journal (ACCSports.com) which featured ACC players in the Majors, and we looked at how those numbers compared to ACC teams’ recent history of success (or lack thereof), as well as looking at how the recent history of Wolfpack Baseball stacks up against the ACC’s other top baseball programs. Here is a quick review:

School (# Current MLB Players) – Recent Program Highlights

  • Wake Forest (0) – ACC Champs ’01, NCAA bids ’00, ’01, ’02, ’07, ’09

This time around, in addition to looking at the 2012 MLB Draft, I thought it might pass for interesting to include numbers of players selected in the MLB draft since 2000, as well as number of players which made a major league team since 2000. It should be noted that this last item is ONLY players who have made their major league debut since 2000 (it is NOT the number of players who have played in a major league game since 2000).

Aside from an interesting outlier here and there, the pattern of “haves” and “have nots” seems to hold pretty closely. I’ll leave it to the readers to decide where that line should be drawn and on which side of it NC State Baseball falls.

Updated Omaha Update

For those not following, the Gamecocks are now one step closer to their three-peat.  South Carolina fought it’s way out of the loser’s bracket to force a sudden death championship game against Arkansas in their half of the CWS bracket, outlasting the Razorbacks 3-2 and advancing to face Arizona in a best of three for the CWS Championship beginning Sunday.

Wufpacker- According to the Baseball America database, Diaz has signed with Pittsburgh.

Just can’t help but wonder what could have been, if the weather in Florida would have been more accomodating, and the outfield not shorter there. Definitely played to Florida’s favor, and lest I forget Rodon didn’t get to pitch a full game. But hopefully next year, we will have more success, and can do more hosting in Raleigh.

We can’t host a super regional because Jed built the stadium about 800 seats shy of the required size. It would have to be at DBAP.

  4. mak4dpak 06/23/2012 at 6:42 PM #

Well the DBAP is alot closer than Gainesville, Florida, until we get those extra seats taken care of. I guess we will be forever indebted to Jed, and his outstanding job as our former AD.

Further follow-up on signings… the 3 starred players in the table have all signed. Pasquale has signed as well.

    Stone has not.

Team was incredibly fortunate that high-draft picks from last year’s class didn’t sign with MLB clubs and instead came to Raleigh. Not too surprised that lightning didn’t strike twice. I hope Stone can continue the success of Charlotte HS players that excel when putting on the Red & White.

Back to the topic, anybody know the top prospects to become the 3rd Wolfpack alum to make the show?

  7. Wufpacker 06/23/2012 at 8:22 PM #

@DBP – Thanks for the info. Updated accordingly.

@elvislives – Since I have very recently looked at that info it would be unfair for me to answer I suppose. But yes, I know.

Congrats (again) to Carlos Rodon for being chosen a first team all american (again), this time by Baseball America.

And apparently, Carolina’s entire team (or maybe just the pitching staff) was chosen as all americans. Sheesh.

“North Carolina, who led the ACC with 19 saves, and Duke starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who was drafted in the first round by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this month, were selected as third-team All-Americas.”

    Wufpacker- No problem!

Elvis- Mazzoni has been pitching pretty well in the Mets system. He may get a shot next year mid-season at the earliest.

Buchanan hasn’t looked as well this year- his K/BB still sits at 60/22 which is OK, but he’s getting hit a bit (110 hits/88 IP). Those two probably represent the next best chances, with obviously Mazzoni ahead.

Brackman is probably done. He walks way too many. There are guys like Matt Camp who toiled in the minors forever and probably won’t get a shot (Aaron Bates is another). Vern Sterry and Michael Rodgers also didn’t pan out. Pratt Maynard has started slow, but the “prospect clock” hasn’t expired on him (especially as a catcher).

Edit: I should point out that Bates did get a call up a few years back. So he did taste the show. He’s with the Cardinals now, and the numbers are way down.

Also, did anyone post that Rodon was a first team A-A and Turner a third by the NCBBWA? Three freshmen made the entire list… we had two of ’em.

Dogbreath – As much as I can’t stand Uncle Jed, I’m pretty sure that is incorrect. IIRC, the hosting parameters for a Super Regional are the same as a Regional, and clearly we meet that. The only thing keeping us from hosting a Super Regional has been our lack of a national seed.

UCLA hosted a Super Regional this year at Jackie Robinson Stadium, with a listed capacity 1,820, and record capacity of 2,914 for a game with USC in 1997 (both numbers according to wikipedia). Capacity at Doak is 2,200 (seated) or 2,500 (with berm seating), and we bring in temporary bleachers for hosting NCAA games. Box score for the final game vs. Vandy had attendance at 3,018. So if UCLA can host a Super in a smaller ballpark (and if you watched their Super, it definitely looked smaller), I would think we could host too. Just need that elusive national seed.

Congrats to UofA. Thought SCar was going to find a way to pull it out tonight there for just a sec, but two out of three ain’t bad.

  13. Dr. BadgerPack 06/26/2012 at 8:35 AM #

From what I gather, for a super regional (host), the requirements are 600 seats reserved for sale to the visiting team, and $35,000 (i think), of which 75% must come from the gate receipts.

We could host next year, but a few things must happen. First, Rodon must stay (face it, he could be the #1 pick in next year’s draft if he chose to pursue that option). We need Stone to show up on campus; we lack in left-handed pitching. We’ll need a couple of hitters to develop, or need an impact freshman (or, Brett Williams to return as his old self). A little more consistency in the non-Rodon/Ogburn starters would be good as well.
