Raleigh Regional Field Set

The Raleigh Regional includes Vanderbilt, Sacred Heart and UNC-Wilmington. And, in typical fashion, barring an upset, State’s road to Omaha will likely have to go through Gainesville and the nation’s top-seeded Florida Gators (ESPN):

    Dont get your hopes up…
    another Avent failure.

Face it Avent is the STATUS QUO!
Find us a baseball coach Debbie!

OMG all he did was get in the tourney.. fire him. Please. If the man gets in and has a team in the top 20 every year I think most everyone is happy with that. All Debbie has said is she wants to be a top 25 team year in and year out. Well hes doing it. So stop trying to fire everyone because they are good but not world beaters. Or we could just pay our team like they do in Crappel Hill. Im sure the press would take it easy on us.

whats really funny is Yow told all the coaches when she was hired…she wants top 25 and ncaa playoffs…if you make the ncaa you get a 1 year contract extension…so you want Avent fired and he just got a 1 year extension….oh he got one last year too…..how about you stop with the Avent bashing until we are not a top 25 team and its not the day after the ncaa just selected us as one of the 16 host sites…it just makes you look dumb even if you aren’t……..

Well, it sure would have been nice to do better than 1-2 in the ACC Tourney. Hell, would have been nice to score a single run against our rival when our pitcher pitched the game of his young life. Hopefully, the team can regroup for the regionals and hopefully beyond. If not, all that great work pretty much went to waste. Put up or shut up time.

FSU I am sure would have loved to do better then 0-3…maybe they will fire Mike Martin and we could pick him up….

People seem to forget that this year’s squad was predicted by most to be a 2 or 3 seed in a regional. And Sasser went down. And Brett Williams went down.

Seems the Avent argument has now migrated, as usual. Being a fence-sitter myself, I’d love to hear some of the pro and con arguments that others find so passionate.

And yes DBP…3 seed in every preseason poll I saw, and most gave the caveat of “if the freshmen can produce early”, or some such.

Cons: No titles, no CWS, formerly exhibited questionable bullpen management, previously had lack of depth in key areas (infield still questionable), rubs some people the wrong way, transfers, didn’t run much before

Pros: Operated until recently without the full per diem given by other ACC schools (negative recruiting tools), best recruiting class in school history once full per diem put in, did not use the Williams/Sasser losses as an excuse this year and finished 2nd in the division, 2 super regionals (read: sweet 16s), 3 regional hosts (including this year, one at another site), not only had top recruiting class last year- but played to player’s strengths and many freshman performed superiorly, program on upswing, with proper personal showed he’s not averse to running- plays to teams strengths

I’m sure there are more on either side. I’ve been in the camp that, once the per diem was competitive I’ve wanted to see what he can do; and the results are above expectations this year. This freshman class is here two more years, and next year’s class is strong and deep although without the big time headliners of last year (but, this is not a surprise as this years MLB high school draft class is not as deep as last year’s).

We should do well at home with Rodon pitching the first winners bracket game.

It would be interesting to see of Thomas gets the ball on the weekend instead of being a long innings Bullpen guy. It’s clear we have hit a road block after Ogburn and Carlos.

Cons: No more than what Doc said, with a tendency to over manage.

    Personal bias withheld.

Pros: Doc, once again, with the addition of finding and staying with a set lineup, and pretty much staying the hell out of the way this year.

Appreciate the feedback, but I already pretty much knew how the two of you felt because like normal humans, you communicate. I was more curious about folks like “thekind”, who feel so compelled to make the effort to get here and post, but then apparently are so angered by what they’re posting about that they can’t stay long enough to actually back up their opinions with thoughtful discourse.

    Cons for Avent:
    – Fair or unfair, what Ray Tanner has done at S. Carolina since leaving NC State. I’d argue that it is apples to oranges, which is why Ray left. Ray’s success though has left people frustrated with Avent.
    – He’s been at NC State a long time. Eventually fans get restless. Again, possibly not fair.
    – Success that UNC has had during this tenure. There’s a perception that UNC passed us under Avent’s watch. They’ve made two CWS Finals recently and I think a couple of other CWS (Final 8). They’ve also spent a lot more money and have way nicer facilities.

    Original discussion:
I love that we’re hosting. That’s a top 16 team, which I think is overachieving given where I expected us before the year started. I also like that Yow is willing to host. That year that Fowler declined hosting and sent us elsewhere (I think ECU) was maddening).

I don’t like the draw of Vandy. I don’t follow the SEC closely, but they seem pretty hot right now. With our cold bats, I might make Vandy the favorite.

ryebread, the year we hosted in Wilson was because Doak was under construction and/or did not have the capacity to host (which was one of the main reasons Tanner left in the first place). The upgraded stadium now gives us the minimum capacity and facilities to host a regional.

I agree with you on the cold bats. As we’ve seen, no matter how good our pitching is, you can’t win if you don’t score runs. Ref: Ga Tech! And that is done by clutch hitting with runners in scoring position. We haven’t gotten that in the past 7 or 8 games with any consistency like we have been all season. We go back to what we’ve done best all year and we’ll be fine.

I added this in the forum section also:

It looks like no TV coverage. ESPN has picked six regionals to broadcast and Raleigh is one of the ten not picked. Does anyone have any additional information?

  15. CaptainCraptacular 05/29/2012 at 5:40 PM #

As mentioned in the body of the article – the games are all on espn3.

    ” I don’t like the draw of Vandy. ” – Rye

I understand what Rye’s sayin’ , but them being here is what gives me some added juice.

State is quite familiar with battling Vanderbilt come NCAAT time.

Reminds me of an old bluegrass song.

    Will the Circle…

And I will be there for that game.

Wuf, use the Google news timeline sometime. Only way one can find some really good stuff.

If ya know what I mean.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 05/30/2012 at 6:58 AM #

Captain- I’m 99.99% certain our regional is not on ESPN3… The ESPN networks are only showing 6 regionals. (Currently, our regional is not listed as broadcast on ESPNs NCAA games schedule, nor is it listed in the upcoming events for ESPN3).

  18. 4in12 05/30/2012 at 8:52 AM #

Thanks, Doc. That’s the way I read it too.

  19. CaptainCraptacular 05/30/2012 at 9:58 AM #

Ok I assumed the text at top which lists the raleigh regional games was copied directly from espn – and that text has espn3 in parentheses.

Looking at the actual link at espn, I see the espn3 is not there for our regional (anymore?)

There may be hope – there is now a video link on the GoPack baseball page (under the Schedule/Results tab) that takes you to the CBSSports web site.
