CBS: Amile Jefferson to decide next week, Pack in strong position

I don’t want to displace this update on the severe academic fraud (and recent arrests) related to UNC-CH athletics…but…

…CBS’ Jon Rothstein just tweeted the following:

About three weeks ago, SFN felt very good about the NC State’s chances to land Jefferson; but the buzz got a little quiet for a while. I can’t help but think that it is an excellent sign for the Wolfpack to get this kind of public affirmation from a member of CBS’ team.

I am surprised Goodman and Parrish did not want to pass on the good news. (sarcasm)

I guess they are busy working on next hatchet job about NC State.

We certainly need another front court player, but if our chance of getting him was so much stronger than the others, he would have announced by now. At best we have a coin-flip’s chance just like everyone else.

A guy on PackInsider has been saying for a couple of days that AJ is coming to State, and he implied that on May 16th, we’ll finally know and understand the reason for the big delay. That was before this tweet. He seems to think there is a very good reason why this is taking so long, as opposed to AJ just being an indecisive prospect.

Time will tell. Worst case, we’ll most likely find out by May 16th.

I believe the staff has never wavered in their belief that we had the inside track with Jefferson. Several things in play that have caused so much time to pass before he commits. I believe this will happen before next Wed which is the last day of signing period.

  7. StandUpAndHowl 05/11/2012 at 10:48 AM #

I understand all that. I’m just saying I doubt that the guy reporting all this is doing any more than guessing. It seems that Jefferson has not confided in anyone outside of his close-knit group (family and coach), and none of them are talking other than to say, “soon”. So how can this journo know?

I am sure Jefferson has his reasons for the long decision/announcement process, and I respect those reasons without knowing what they are. In the interviews I’ve seen of the kid, he seems like a very intelligent young man. I just doubt that he has shared anything with a journalist, that would be inconsistent with everything else he’s done.

Like I told you guys last month, Amile is waiting to see if CJL goes pro.

Oh, uh, maybe that theory didn’t pan out. lol.

    Lunatic Fringe,

I was going to make a comment in the entry that was very similar to yours regarding the source of the news not being one of the other members of CBS’ romper room.

I thing our chances are the same as everyone else. That, quite frankly, is an improvement over years gone by.

While it would be great to sign him I just have a bad feeling about this guy. To me it is obvious he wants to be a “one and done” player and wants to see which school will give him the most playing time, allow him to score the most points, etc. That or he is a drama king and wants all of the attention he can get. Either way this means he will not be a team players. Just my opinion.

  12. Lunatic Fringe 05/11/2012 at 12:33 PM #

    Stejen,

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I respectfully disagree with both of those assertions on AJ. Everything I have read/seen in videos leads me to believe he is a really good kid who is pretty unselfish player.

Why is this any different than the other times we heard “he’s going to announce next week?”

  14. HaxPack 05/11/2012 at 1:24 PM #

^May 16 is the last day sign a Letter of Intent. Next week.

stejen, he might WANT to be a one-and-done guy, and he might even THINK he’s a one-and-done guy. But that doesn’t mean he IS a one-and-done guy.

CJL thought he was a one-and-doner, too, and he’s about to begin year three (no offense, Calvin!)

I also have heard good things about this guy’s character. Would fit well in our team first culture not to mention our terrific “pro-style” up-tempo offense. He is at least a 2-year guy due to his lack of size. He’s a 3/4 tweener similar to CJ.

This is a HUGE commitment if it pans out. It ensures we are a top 10 program for the next 2 years as well (after departure of CJ and possibly others).

Wow. Feels good to see a future Pro-Pipeline at State. GO PACK!!! We hangry!

I think the guy needs to figure out how tall his is! Just read the three links below, he grew two inches.

If he’s a 6’8″ skinny kid that plays inside, he’s not going anywhere except oblivion if he goes pro after one year.

probably 6’7 or 8” everyone exaggerates height. wish we had a true center (not the aussie no offense)! one thing we lack that the power houses have. maybe 2012?!

Signing AJ would be tremendous for our program!

To go head-to-head with the likes of Kentucky, Ohio State, and Duke in a very public way for a recruit and come out the winner would signal a major shift in status for our program. Unlike our other three signees, AJ is not a local kid, so landing him adds a new dimension to Gott’s impressive recruiting success.

In the shorter term, having Aj on the roster will produce 3-4 extra wins next year, probably the difference between a solid season and a six or seven seed in the NCAAT and a remarkable year and two or three seed.

By all accounts, he is a young man of high character, high baskeball IQ, and has a substantial physical upside (he is skinny right now, but his pops is a big dude). When AJ fills out, he will be a handful!!

    Go get him coach!

    Love the sound of that!!!

  21. maverick_ncsu 05/11/2012 at 2:55 PM #

Maybe an elementary question, but what happens if he doesn’t sign by May 16th? Is he then not eligible to play next year?

  22. TruthBKnown Returns 05/11/2012 at 3:05 PM #

Maverick, from what I understand, the LOI just binds him to the university, and our staff would hold the scholarship for him (and not recruit anyone else to fill his shoes).

But it isn’t required. He could always show up in the fall and say “Coach, I’m here.” But would we still have a scholarship for him? Plus, he’d have to go through the “usual” admittance process that just any old shmoe would have to follow. The LOI expedites the process for him.

There may be other benefits/drawbacks, but that’s generally how it works (I believe).

  23. Mike 05/11/2012 at 3:09 PM #

From all accounts I have heard, AJ wants to be close to home/family. So May 16th is the day that his mom starts a new job in Raleigh and the family moves here………..wait, wrong school that does that, my bad. Was thinking we were Chapel Hill.

  24. Lunatic Fringe 05/12/2012 at 5:37 PM #

It looks like Tuesday at 4 PM per his HS coach.
