N & O wrong again!

Most readers I assume have heard about UNC-CH coach Fedora’s over-excited statement from Wednesday night.  When asked about the State rivalry, Fedora apparently exclaimed ““I don’t want to talk about [the rivalry] too much because I don’t want to legitimize their program.”  Yeah whatever.  I actually don’t care that much about his dumb comments.  What I do care about is the mistake in the N & O’s online and print coverage:

UNC fans are eager for the Heels to break a five-game losing streak against N.C. State – a streak that represents UNC’s longest stretch of futility in the series since losing five consecutive games from 1978 through 1982.

State actually won from 1988-1992.

1988: 48-3

1989: 40-6

1990: 12-9

1991: 24-7

1992: 27-20

And State did not win 5 straight from 1978-1982, so they got it doubly wrong.  Is it asking too much for our “home-town” paper to get basic, easy-to-check facts correct?

You guys realize that there is no longer a copy editing staff in Raleigh, right? They ship all their stuff to Charlotte, have it edited there, and then it is transmitted back up here for printing. That’s why the print edition has earlier deadlines for, say, late baseball scores than it did even 10 years ago. Like all other medium sized newspapers, the N&O is dying a slow death. Getting mad at them is sort of like getting mad at the old lady with the walker who delays you at the grocery store…

Let’s cut Andrew Carter a little slack. He’s a State grad after all.

I thought Fayetteville Observer was our local paper for NC State. LOL…. I think that paper and the Wilmington Star give us more accurate & positive press.

That 1990 game was easily the most fun I’ve ever had at an away game. I was sitting in the middle of Ram’s Club season ticket holders who had been on me and the few other red clad folks in that area since before kickoff and assuring me/us that this would not become a three-peat (we had destroyed them the previous two seasons).

When Damon Hartmann lined up to attempt a 56 yarder with time expiring, some of them actually began to celebrate what they thought was a certain 9-9 tie. When the kick sailed thru with barely a foot to spare, the entire stadium went dead silent except for the WPC section and small isolated pockets of Pack fans throughout the stadium. It was awesome.

A close second (as far as fun away games) was the ’86 game at Kenan when they attempted a 2pt conversion for the win, but failed when the receiver’s knee touched as he caught the screen pass. We’ve never lost to Carolina at Kenan when I’ve been there in person, btw.

The News & Observer has become a California liberal yellowsheet soapbox for all things anti-conservative, and it is being run by Carolina blueblood liberals.

Baseball deadlines are indeed earlier, and night games west of the Rockies are now never reported in the next day’s final. The paper refuses to list ANY games carried by our regional cable sports channel MASN (the entire 162 games for the Orioles and Nationals), probably because Time-Warner won’t carry MASN (Directv does on its basic package). The games that are reported now have only box scores except for one or two.

Football conference standings outside the ACC are limited to the CUSA, CIAA, the MEAC and Campbell’s conference, with not one mention of all the power conferences or even the SOCON. The SEC was added last year, finally, but why do we need daily standings for these small conferences? Political correctness, that’s why.

The articles written by the columnists are ok at times, but they are definitely pro-blue, and any PC cause will be trumpeted on the front pages. If this paper is a friend of the Wolfpack, then who needs enemies?

I hope I live to see (at least) the print edition of this paper go under.
