Changing the Status Quo?

Brett Friedlander says N.C. State poised to become ACC’s new leader of the pack in 2012/13.

You might want to sit down for this one, Wolfpack fans. It’s not an April Fool’s joke.

The moment Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Kendall Marshall announced their intention to leave the Tar Heels for the NBA draft on Thursday, State suddenly became the team to beat in the ACC next year.

[snip]

But while coaches Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski are Hall of Famers who always find a way to do their best work when times seem the worst, neither will be blessed with a team stocked with at least three returning starters and a trio of incoming McDonald’s All-Americas.

The Wolfpack will.

It’s a diverse lineup fueled by the playmaking and leadership of Lorenzo Brown, a third-team All-ACC selection and the best returning point guard in the league. Scott Wood is a veteran perimeter threat who has added elements to his game on both ends of the floor since Gottfried’s arrival while Richard Howell and DeShawn Painter have proven themselves to be a formidable tandem down low.

[snip]

Now all the Wolfpack has to do is go out on the court and turn all that talent and potential into wins – something that hasn’t always been easy for it, especially when expectations are at their highest.

This, however, is a different breed of Wolfpack, one with a new coach, a new attitude and a small taste of success to feed its hunger. And this is an ACC in which teams other than UNC and Duke can dare to dream of winning championships and tournament titles, the way Florida State did even before Barnes, Henson and Marshall cashed out and entered the draft.

There will be plenty of competition from the newly empowered Seminoles, as well as a healthy Miami, an improved Maryland and those traditional powers that always seem to find their way to the top of the standings, regardless of the circumstances. And a lot can happen over the course of a long, hot summer. But when the dominoes have fallen and the pieces of the puzzle are finally in place, N.C. State is the team they’ll all be trying to beat when practice begins next October.

Believe it or not.

I have said since the end of the season that I thought we would be a Top 10 team in the pre-season polls if Calvin returned. I’m not so sure we will be the team to beat if he goes to the NBA. You just never know how freshmen will actually perform until they get some time on the court. The other wild card for State will be how many useful minutes we can get out of DeThaey, Harris, and Vandenberg.

    Dear Calvin,

Please stay with us for at least one more year.

    Sincerely,

    Wolfpack Nation

We schould be the favorite with or without CJL, but remember we live in the land of the blue-biased media. We will still be picked 3rd behind the blues. We will have to prove them wrong on the court.

Nice to be in the picture and great to have people talking about us winning the ACC. Not feeling sorry for Roy though, he got a top ten recruiting class coming in along with plenty of talent still there. State73 probably right media still will have UNC-CHeat picked to win ACC if not them then Duke.

  5. Wulfpack 04/02/2012 at 8:24 AM #

I disagree. If Calvin stays, I think the media will have us as the preseason #1.

  6. WTNY 04/02/2012 at 8:25 AM #

One thing that helps integrate new players is a preseason trip.

I believe they are allowed once every 4 years and vaguely recall that this summer NC State will be taking one. Can anyone confirm?

  7. Clarksa 04/02/2012 at 8:36 AM #

I’m still confused…I thought it too 6-7 years to become competitive but not competitive enough to challenge Duke and UNC. I’ve got a lot of brain washing to get over…

WTNY…yes, they will be going to Spain this summer…

  8. WTNY 04/02/2012 at 8:39 AM #

    Clarksa — thanks.

That is good news. Very good timing.

Wait you mean they’re not going to Canada?! Not like recruits care about these trips anyway let’s just save the money for golfing trips to Ireland.

“We will still be picked 3rd behind the blues. We will have to prove them wrong on the court.” -State73

Carolina is greatly weakened from this season (as Friedlander points out) so I don’t think any rational individual will pick them as an ACC powerhouse, at least not on the facts presented. For this next season, the stars are aligning as well as they could have for NC State to “break the ice”.

The ‘blue’ I’m concerned with is Duke. They weren’t great this year, but they also weren’t raided by NBA attrition. I think Coach K is an extremely good coach and could see him rebound from last season and stage a solid squad.

WolfpackWorld, I guess you mean that by “NBA attrition” Austin Rivers and probably Mason Plumlee aren’t important pieces for Duke.

    Alrighty then…

I had a chat with some church members last night – a couple state grads, a Wake fan and a Duke fan. We all agreed that there is a new sheriff in town. Where we disagreed a bit was which blue would suffer first. I think Duke (although I can see they might gain by subtraction of a distraction). UNX even with the losses has quality depth and an excellent class. All that said I think it will come down to the coaching staffs. There for a change State might have the lead.

Great to see us up there, but if McAdoo is back, UNC is still extremely talented though extremely untested.

Bullock, McDonald, Strickland, McAdoo, Hairston and Paige are all McD AA’s. With very good players in Brice Johnson, Tokoto, and James coming in.

I’d still put us as the favorite, but I wouldn’t put a team that talented any lower than 3rd. Besides… I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see them pick another bigtime player before it’s all said and done. Is the youth of that team going to struggle a little bit over the course of a season? Probably, but it’s also a team that could beat anybody out there on a given night.

  14. choppack1 04/02/2012 at 6:27 PM #

It’s all premature. A lot can happen between now and then. What is worth noting is that our staff and players did a super job last year, and we should expect the same.

Perhaps the best news is that we aren’t talking about a team that got tons of good breaks to win games. Better execution in the final minutes would have given us a much better ranking going into tourney.

  15. swamppack 04/02/2012 at 6:30 PM #

Without Calvin, State’s future will still be bright, but may go from “should” be the team to beat to “might” be the team to beat this coming season.

My, how I hope he stays.

  16. JSRy2k 04/02/2012 at 6:43 PM #

Does this sort of press factor into Calvin’s decision? He’ll have all kinds of attention if he stays but get lost in the shuffle if he goes.

There’s an old game my parents had, called Careers, centered on accumulating fame, fortune and happiness. Calvin might be able to garner a measure of fortune even as a second round NBA pick, but the fame he’s looking at by staying one more year will be unparalleled.

Calvin, we love you already, but you have an opportunity to be a LEGEND if you hand around in Raleigh!

  17. JSRy2k 04/02/2012 at 6:47 PM #

I’m on the west coast, and the first thing out of friends’ mouths when they hear I’m an NC State guy is, “Isn’t it tough competing w/ Duke and UNC?” It’s high time our program puts that overplayed load of BS to death.

  18. Wufpacker 04/02/2012 at 7:20 PM #

Hopefully Calvin is getting good input from many different sources and hopefully the folks close to him truly have his best interests at heart. If so, I think he comes back.

Also, I like the feeling of being relevant again in the conversations about next year, but our ascending dynasty might not be as far along yet as some would like to think, even if Calvin stays.

“Wait you mean they’re not going to Canada?!”

On behalf of Canada, I would welcome the team to Victoria and show them a good time.

@JSRy2k – one of the guys who plays in my regular games went to Carolina… 3000 miles away in another country is still not far enough 😛 As Hole fans go, though, he’s pretty level headed, but I’d love nothing better than to whip the Heels multiple times next year.

There’s enough foul money in the chapelish hell to sign a Noel & some other schnides. They will do fine, as will Swofford & his refs. Prepare for more of the same next year…

I’m Canadian, my son goes to UNC and I played Careers all the time when I was a kid.

Brett must be out of his mind. I mean look at what the expert Gary Parish says about K-State’s hiring of Bruce Weber:

“… now Kansas State has hired a C just like North Carolina State — which initially set its sights unrealistically high — hired a C last year.”

Amazing what that old recycled veteran coach has done at the unrealistic NC State program. K-State should be so lucky … but then that would require Gary Parrish to actually have a brain to make that connection.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/18196825/what-did-you-expect-kansas-state-fans

What is really sad is that when I saw the title of the article and the author I knew, before even opening the link, that a not-so-subtle jab at NC State would be included in whatever drivel he had written. For a loser program with such unrealistic expectations Gary and others sure feel a need to keep telling everybody how pathetic we are. What is the source of their hate?

  23. choppack1 04/02/2012 at 10:42 PM #

What a tool. Why set your sights low?

Of.course, parrish is a writer and like Bobby knight said, “Most of us learn how to write by the 3rd grade – then we move on.”

  24. hball57 04/04/2012 at 9:16 PM #

You know, I love you guys, but you might want to accurately represent the article. The “C” wasn’t a grade, it was a selection of the multiple choice question (as in “C” a recycled veteran). The press is changing a little due to our success and the fact our AD and Coach know how to use the media to our advantage. Let’s enjoy it!
