2 media report ACC referee tells Coach Gottfried “Shut your fucking ass up” during UNC game

Around 3:05pm on Saturday afternoon – deep in the the second half of the ACC Tournament semi-final game that saw significant national criticism befall the Atlantic Coast Conference officiating crew who called 42 phenomenally inconsistent fouls – I got a couple of strange tweets come through our SFN Timeline.

Someone had re-tweeted a tweet from @adam_smithTN that said, “Gottfried: “That’s a charge!” Ref Brian Dorsey: “Shut your #$%^&& ass up!”

Initially, I thought it was someone (who I don’t know) crafting a figurative allegory about Dorsey’s awful officiating at the time. Obviously, no professional official would ever talk that way to any coach — particularly a group of officials mired in a controversy that saw them publicly supporting Karl Hess in his recent dust up with Mark Gottfried’s NC State University by wearing taped ‘KH’ on their shoes in the opening round of the ACC Tournament (Link to story). And, particularly not Dorsey, who was an official on Hess’ crew that called the controversial game in the RBC Center when Chris Corchiani & Tom Gugliotta were ejected.

So, I asked if this was a real tweet or not in the SFN Twitter timeline (that was ON FIRE TODAY, by the way)?

When I did, 99.9 FM’s Joe Ovies quickly responded, “Yup, that just happened. RT @adam_smithTN Gottfried: “That’s a charge!” Ref Brian Dorsey: “Shut your #$%^&& ass up!””

Then I checked out this Adam Smith guy and learned that he is actually a member of the sports media out of Burlington for the Times-News.

So, this gives us TWO eye-witness reports from actual media members on press row that corroborate that an ACC referee taunted, disrespected and degraded NC State’s basketball coach in the middle of a phenomenally controversial game.

Let that sit for a moment.

Really…think about that for a while.

HOLY ****!!!! (forgive us for a moment…as SFN does NOT use the kind of language that ACC officials are allowed to use).

What is one to say about this level of negative bias, vitriol and outwardly aggressive animosity from a supposed ‘unbiased’ official whose judgement and whistle LITERALLY get to decide the outcome of the game?

I am genuinely too upset and wired to construct any kind of analysis or response at the moment. I will simply start by asking if anyone has ever heard an official say something similar to Dean Smith, Coach K, Roy Williams, or ANY other college basketball coach?

Oh my…could you IMAGINE if an official had said such a thing to Gary Williams? Do you think he would have lived to see the next whistle?

For decades, all but two of the Atlantic Coast Conference institutions have almost uniformly acknowledged that the conference has a major problem with officiating incompetence and double standards. Maybe some of the ‘good’ news about yet ANOTHER public implosion of John Swofford and John Clougherty’s officiating cabal will be some change is on the way. If not, we deserve to blame ourselves if we don’t do anything other than sit around the same lazy, old-boy environment that the ACC has created.

You guys are too close to the fire to feel the heat. If this happened to another school, you’d be giggling along with the crowd. If you think this league cares AT ALL about the quality of its officials, then I defy you to reconcile that theory with its continued employment of Ron Cherry.

Seriously: your athletic director thought picking a fight with the league and its officials was a good idea. Let me know how that works out for you.

Don’t make me say it, Statefans.

Add another “confirmation” that Coach G. did not “hear” it. Obviously, he was still miffed at what happened and with all the uproar, he did not catch the comment.

StatSheet, where the Ref information lives, lists Brian Dorsey as the Referee for ALL our ACC Tourney Games. Have they NEVER heard of ROTATION.

Therefore, Dorsey WAS one of the officials with the KH tape on his shoes that the ACC made them pull off prior to our BC game.

I can NOT imagine having ONE referee call ONE team’s game in a tournament. You could rotate the day games and have a more impartial crew.

After what we had done to us today in Atlanta, don’t think for one minute that it won’t be done to us again tomorrow, this time in Indianapolis.

Interested how this will play out with the league. This ref needs to get more than the BS “reprimand” that Hess got, and we, namely Gott, deserve a MASSIVE apology. This is utterly disrespectful and beyond shameful if they allow this to go unpunished. I’m not one to blame anyone else but us for a loss, but this game was so blatantly biased it was painful.

We have a bright future with our new leadership, I hope it doesn’t get spoiled by things we can’t control.

This confirms what we have always thought. The bias my friends is real. It seemed the officials had a chip on their shoulder or a score to settle today to put it mildly. The only protest that is effective is if you protest with your wallet. Stop supporting businesses that support the ACC. Stop watching. Stop doing business with advertisers and make it known that is what you are doing. I am fed up with this sad putrid shell of a conference.

It’s being talked that the corruption is so bad regarding ACC officiating that you can “buy” a foul.

    OK, I’ll bite.

The tarhole troll wonders how it’s working out for us to have our first AD with a backbone to pick a fight with the ACC?

Pretty good from where I sit. The ACC officials are the ones showing their asses, right in front of god and country. Sure, we’re getting reamed but the difference is heightened awareness of this crooked racket. I hope she pursues this to the max.

    #64680

If a ref said that to a coach, he should be sanctioned. Completely disrespectful and unprofessional.
But conspiracy to get another Carolina/ dook match up… kinda farfetched… paranoid much.
Did the refs keep turning the ball over too… good game, glad the Heels pulled it out. Hope the pack make it in. Go Heels, Beat (Fla) state:)

1 – Standing up for yourself, your team, your coach, and your school when wronged & disrespected is NOT ‘picking a fight’.
2 – So a ref can tell a coach to STFU, but a coach will then get fined in the post-game presser if he calmly (and without profanity) questions the actual calls made during a game? Yeah – that makes sense.

For those who read The Hunger Games, the ACC has morphed into Panem… blue schools live in The Capitol… the Pack resides in District 12…

I don’t talk much on here but I read alot. I certainly understand all the complaints about the refs. I, for one, don’t like the refs having an impact on the end of the game. Let ’em play, I say. I prefer to look back at the Johnson turn over and think we didn’t take advantage of the opportunity we had. Moreso, even if we get that win, I don’t think we match up w/FSU at all. This isn’t the end of the story for NCSU bball, just another early chapter.

To somehow put a positive spin on all of this, I like what I read on WRAL about us developing an edge. I would think/hope that will be something that stays with us for the rest of this season and beyond. Perhaps if we had played with more of chip on our shoulder throughout the season, we would have had a couple more wins. I hope we can look back in the future and point to this game as another defining moment in the re-establishment of our basketball program. Regardless, we are a dangerous team in whatever tournament we play in and we are an up and coming program that should be able to vie in the conference and the country for many years to come.

When every single article in today’s paper mentions how bad the officiating was – even UNC’s beat writer – you know you’re not imagining things. Hell, even Deems f-ing May says so.

The refs were bad all day. Game on the line Calvin pump fakes Watts and beats him to the basket for a layup, Calvin should be going to the line for 3 pt play but call is a charge on Calvin no basket and is his 4th foul. This was a horrible call. Barnes falls and gets up with ball, this is traveling, no call, same play Barnes falling backwards heaves shot, foul on Wood who is standing there with his arm up. This was another horrible call. Barnes goes down lane out of control runs into Brown and Williams loses ball which Calvin catches, whistle foul on Calvin his 5th. Johnson’s turnover was horrible and made last play with Marshall possible but to flop is one thing to get knocked down and slid 10 ft across the floor is an obvious charge. Finally, Watts feet(both of them) were out of bounds. We would have had ball under our own basket with about 5 seconds. There are always going to be bad calls in any game but to consistently get hosed down the stretch of a game is ridiculous.

Carolina and jhmd: not sure why you feel the need the need to post here. Guilt over the way you were handed the game? Attempt at being a ‘gracious’ winner? Not really sure so I will give the benefit of the doubt. However, it is a lot easier for you to do these things when the acc/Carolina is doing the pitching and state is doing the catching. We’re tired of catching and just want a fairly called game. No special favors wanted. However, no more kh on shoes bullshit, no one-sided calls bullshit, just straight up playing. Yeah, you kicked our butts in ch this year, but we owned you yesterday, just like we all know we owned duke…this shit is getting old.

^you’re still a prick who is reading and commenting on a State site. Thanks for your backhanded compliments. They are really appreciated. Let’s follow up this conversation when I post on the Carolina sites. And I would never be such a low class asshole to do troll another fanbase’s site, dick.

“Don’t make me say it, Statefans.”

No need I will say it for you. Yes you are complete and utter douche bag. You only show up after a frustrating loss and act like a complete a-hole, but we expect nothing less from our UNC “brethren”. You are why people hate UNC so much. Your condescending attitude and insults thinly veiled as “advice” are what we are used to from the UNC fans (note I said fans because I bet, you, like the majority of their bandwagoners have never set foot in a UNC classroom.

According to you we should just bend over and continue taking the reaming we get from the ACC. Well at NCSU men do not enjoy that activity like they do at UNC so we will continue fighting it.

Isn’t the UNC troll cute. He is using a Duke blog to support his moronic opinion. LOL at the pure stupidity. So we can pull multiple national columnists calling that game a sham and the best you’ve got is the other school that is babied by the ACC.
Bravo, your hubris is world class.

“If Debbie has a legit complaint about officiating, she needs to be smart enough to keep her powder dry and play her hand THEN, not on the heels of a 20 point home drubbing to FSU. That’s the WORST way she could have played it, since it makes enemies unnecessarily. Her chickens came home to roost yesterday. Sorry to be the one to tell you that, but she needs to be smarter than that.”

What is your point? Are you trying to say that by questioning Hess ejections of two fans for questioning his calls (of which perhaps you have seen this happen but I never have even at Duke .. have you ever attended a game at Duke at heard what the fans say to refs there and what Coach K used to say in his early years) that she should have expected the refs would band together and then call BS calls on her team? Or are you trying to say that NC State should just accept injustice?

I still have not seen any justification for Hess’s actions and the fact that the refs in the tournament decided to support him shows the ACC has no control over the refs. Then again when the head of ACC officals states that “UNC is a team that tends to foul less than others” and “we watch for tendencies” then perhaps your right in that DY should have expected the blow-back from the ACC refs.

“No, the best I’ve got is two turnovers in the last minute that make any officiating moot”

LMAO … ” you that ran off Turner, Fowler, Amato, Sendek, O’Cain, Hess, and whomeverisnext will find a way to blame those turnovers on the refs too.”

There is no way that UNC-CH would allow any of those ADs or coaches to stay as long as we did based on W-L records or performance. Yet somehow we are crazy for letting go of them!

You guys ran off one of the best coaches in college football in Butch Davis.

For the record – we did not run off Hess. Please enlighten me on how you came up with this original thought.
