NC State tied for first place in the ACC; Roger Ayers in first place for fouls called vs State

HUGE win for NC State down in Miami!! Link to Boxscore

I’m so excited that I can’t wait for tomorrow morning so I can see the impact to our RPI. Regardless of the direct impact to our numbers, a 15-5 (4-1) ACC team who has played a Top 30 schedule is clearly/squarely a (currently projected) NCAA Tournament team.

Of course, things change. The great news for State is that we get two opportunities this week – at Carolina on Thursday and at home against Virginia on Saturday night – to pick up important ‘good wins’ against projected NCAA Tournament teams. Both schools’ RPIs are strong enough that just playing the game will help solidify the Wolfpack’s RPI.

Some other interesting statistics worth noting here:

* NC State has won three in a row and won NINE OF OUR LAST TEN GAMES! When was the last time that kind of streak existed in the last week of January?

* Miami went 2 of 20 from the three point line. Miami’s Malcolm Grant was 0 for 9 and Durand Scott to 4 of 11, for a combined 13 points.

* State’s last two opponents on the road (Wake & Miami) have been held to a combined 4 of 40 from behind the three point line

* It’s the first 4-1 start for the Wolfpack (15-5) since the 2003-04, also the last time it won 11 league games รขโ‚ฌโ€ coach Mark Gottfried’s stated goal for this team. (Link)

* Scott Wood now owns the all-time ACC record for consecutively made free throws and his streak is still in tact at 58.

We talked about ACC referee, Roger Ayers, in this message board thread last week after State’s loss against Georgia Tech. It was ‘interesting’ to watch him on the court on Sunday.

One poster on another set of message boards shared the following —

“I counted fouls called by Ayers in today’s game.

NC State: 8
Miami: 2

Ayers called 4 of Howell’s 5 fouls, and called Leslie’s technical.”

mak4dpak, maybe I did not make myself clear about Strickland. I know he will be out the rest of the year. I was stating that the players that will take his place are better shooters than Strickland and if we play zone we could get burned that way as well. That is what I was trying to explain.

I will say it again but it will not make any difference to some. STOP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!

Maybe I am talking to glasses that are half full people. I don’t know!

^I think you mean “glass half empty” people…

I can understand the guarded feelings that some of us have right now. Just go through the archives of your local sports sections for the last 20 years and note all the times that we’ve been let down once we placed faith in the basketball team.

as we head into Chapel Hell to face a team full of McDonalds All-Americans (Barnes and McAdoo MVPS) and with 3 starting players headed to the NBA next year that all will likely go among the top ten picks with one player likely going as the number one pick overall. Yeah, I am a little guarded. I marked that down as 2 losses. David did beat Golaith and Mel Gibson did beat Master Blaster and FSU got them. To beat them we must be hitting on all cylinders.

It absolutely should be 2 losses. The Tech loss means we have to get one off someone – but AT unc-ch ain’t the place I’m putting my money.

I’m amongst the guarded group with respect to how we end up this season only because we still haven’t beaten anybody that’s particularly good yet. I’m very encouraged by the direction of the team. While watching yesterday there was a stretch where you could tell that Miami was flustered by our defensive pressure and our willingness to push the tempo. We are actually able to make other teams uncomfortable which is a definite change.

It is hard for me to watch a complete game,”Herbitis”. Gave up my season tickets to basketball and concentrated on football. However, watch all of this game. Optimistic about this coach, love the effort of this team. Proud of Woods accomplishment. At this time, just happy that this team is trying to play defense. Happy that our coach is managing the team. “time out before end of 1st half to set a play”, folks he is coaching. Watched shots of assistants, bench etc., attitude looks like a completly different team from last season. Optimistic, “yea that’s the ticket.”

I watched Roger Ayers ref a UNC-A game this year and he is incompetent. He knows he is in over his head so that is why he is so quick to T someone up. The man can not count to five. I am sure Comm. Swofford will step in, by the way has he said anything about Leroy Williams pulling his team and walking off the floor?

Thanks for correcting me MrPlywood(Glass half empty).

I have talked to some UNC fans and they are actually worried about Thurs.

Yes, we might lose but remember those kids in the red and white are not old enough to know they are suppose to lose.

These UNC fans I spoke with all stated the same thing to me. They said your team(State) plays with heart even though we do not have a deep bench. They all feel something is not right and there might be a disconnect in the clubhouse.

I think we are going to make the game very interesting near the end.

^I live with a glass half empty person, I’m aware of the symptoms ๐Ÿ™‚

re: worried UNX fans (and Wahoo fans for that matter) – I have noticed an increase in trolls from various “non-rivals” appearing on ESPN threads about State games. They are worried.

re: Thursday – I also remain guarded. I’m really interested to see how Gott handles the team and the situation.

If Roger Ayers shows up as a ref in Chapel Hell we are doomed before the game ever starts. Does anyone know what Ayers has against the PACK?
