Red helmet seems to be gaining steam

NC State unleashed more alternative uniforms this year than we’ve ever seen. The combination of red helmets with a white block S in tandem with black jerseys for an October home game vs Central Michigan came off surprisingly well.

Then the Wolfpack surprised everyone by pairing the same red helmet with all red uniforms for two huge wins in the final two home games of the season vs Clemson and Maryland. Also if you remember, then we wore all red jerseys and red pants for much of last season as well on our way to a 9-4 season.

The red helmets were very well received by NC State fans and garnered more positive reviews than negative. I’ve personally been wondering what more permanent changes may exist in the future of NC State’s uniform combinations? So, you can imagine why my radar caught a blip when I saw the ‘official’ poster (pictured below) in the lobby of the Wolfpack’s bowl hotel headquarters in Charlotte.

Note the use of the red helmet for the GoPack Store poster. It appears that the appreciation and acceptance of the red helmet is proliferating.

    I noticed the red helmet logo as well. The Belk Bowl t-shirts they’ve been selling at the gopack.com store also features the red helmet. Not sure how significant it is, but I’d be fine with the red helmet becoming more the norm, though I do like the white helmet as well and hope it won’t be phased out completely.

    As far as the unis, the red on red is growing on me, but I still prefer the red on white at home and the all white on the road.

    The red helmet needs some black outlining on the block s to make it stand out some. It looks like a white blob.

    I really like those red helmets. Some slight tweaking with the block S might make them look even better. Those helmets are Cowdog-Buckey twins old school.

    It might not look good with our color combinations but I sort of like the flat color helmets. Flat black and the flat purple of TCU just seem to look good. Maybe we could pull off a flat black with a red block S? It will be tough to beat the red helmets.

    I like the red helmets with the red jerseys. Unfortunately I don’t think the all white road uni’s(which I love) would work with the red helmets. In ’99 when when we had the sparkly red bass boat helmets I think we always wore red pants on the road? How would a flat red with the white road uni’s look?

    Call me a grinch … I kinda like the red helmet; but I do not like the center stripes. The stripe needs to be solid. The block “S” needs to be solid, as well. As it is, the helmet reminds me of the Monte Kiffin regime.

    That said, I love our all white and all red unis.

    I knew you boys would like ’em.

    Red lids will go well with road white, too. However, red wrist bands, red hand towel / warmer, are necessary accessories.

    I like the red helmet OK. But my favorite is still the white one. The red block S logo looks better on the white helmet than the white block S logo looks on the red helmet. But I agree that they ought to lose the white stripe on the red helmets.

    As for uniforms, I like the red jersey and white pants combo. I prefer the jersey to say NC State, though simply State is acceptable.

    I can be happy with whatever red/white combo we use. But for crying out loud, let’s not go off the deep end like the twerps did or use black uniforms.

    Not too picky here… I like both.
    As long as we stay away from black this State grad is happy.
    Our colors are Red and White.

    Love the red helmets (surprised me, too). Need some black trim around the logo to make it pop.

    Also like to see the red helmet, red jersey and white trousers combo and red helmet, white jersey and trouser combo. Wearing all red isn’t special if you do it every game.

    Just assume never see us in black again. Personal preference.

    The best thing about the red helmets (IMHO) is that it differentiates us from Stanford. Ever since we went with the white helmet with the red block S, we’ve had a huge identity crisis (at least outside of the state of NC. With the white on red, there’s really no mistaking who we are.

    There are a couple of minor things that I think could be improved:
    – Some sort of black outline mixed in to better separate the red and white.
    – A larger white block S relative to the red background. Darker colors “bleed” into lighter colors as perceived by the brain. That means that a white on darker color object needs to actually be bigger than a darker object on white just to be perceived as the same time.
    – I agree with the person above who didn’t like the 3 middle stripes. I’d like one thin white one or none at all.
    – If we go with the red helmets, then I think we need to do white shirts and red pants on the road.
    – If we start featuring red more, then I think we need to keep all whites with white helmets as alternate jerseys. That look during the Rivers era was honestly my favorite that we’ve ever had.

    Why haven’t ya’ll caught on to the combinations yet. We wear red tops and white bottoms for nonconference. Red on red for conference games. By the way I love the red helmet. It does need some black. I hope we don’t fade out the white ones completely. It’s a nice change. For all you black uniform haters…..black uniforms are in. All over the country and players love them. As fans we just need to accept it.

    ncsustash has it right, we need black outlining. Every other block S has black outlining except the Red helmets, which (IMO) need it the most. Black uni’s are definitely in, especially for the schools that can make it work. The Wolfpack can definitely make it work. Black and Red SCREAMS intimidation

    I like the white helmets, and would make them completely white by removing the stripe and going with a white facemask. Think Texas with a red block S instead of the longhorn. Having said that, I might like the red helmets if they were all red except for the white block S logo. The mulit-stripe just doesn’t look that good to me.

    We may see black pants with white tops for an occasional away game in the future, and it will probably be white helmets away and red helmets home.
