Pack beats NC Central 65-60

In a game that was closer than it should have been:

Senior C.J. Williams, playing in his 100th career game, scores a career-high 21 points as NC State wins another throwback game at Reynolds Coliseum, 65-60. The Pack returns to action on Saturday against third-ranked Syracuse at the RBC Center.

This victory propels the Wolfpack into their next game, against Syracuse, which should be the number one team in the nation when the new polls come out. There hasn’t been a non-conference number one ranked team to play inside the RBC Center before. The place needs to be electric on Saturday.

in your opinion/best guess/estimate: what was the ‘warm seat’ attendance?

Looked like maybe 7k, which makes no sense to me. The team played like nobody was watching. We looked pretty bad. Just lucky to get the victory. Hope we decide to show up against Cuse or else it may be a very long night.

Perhaps they were looking ahead to ‘Cuse, or otherwise occupied with thoughts of exams and holidays. Whatever the reason, they got away with it. In past years, we would have lost this game to NCCU. Need I remind anyone of the losses to low majors in the past…as well as several near misses.

Fans seem pretty apathetic about the game as well.

Here’s hoping for a good showing (from both) against the ‘Cuse and maybe even a signature upset for the RBC Center.

Gott or no Gott, as long as CJ Leslie continues to back up and shoot, it will be another disappointing season.

The reconfigured Reynolds holds around 9,000 if I remember right. Per Go Pack, today’s attendance was 4018.

I understand that the reason these games are being played at Reynolds is that Disney on Ice is on at the RBC Center and the coaching staffs (both Gottfried and Lowe) want to play a game on the Saturday during exams, but these Reynolds games have got to stop. The team knows that they are not going to play a high level opponent. The game is not a part of the season ticket package, and the size of the crowd is commenserate. So this flat performance is not unexpected. One of these days, this game is going to come back and bite the Pack.

What is the big deal about waiting three more days and playing a game next Tuesday in the RBC Center?

I loved Reynolds as much like the next guy, but that ship has sailed. The only time to play in Reynolds is if there is a conflict at the RBC and the Pack is in the NIT. Otherwise, don’t play in Reynolds anymore.

The schedule at gopack.com shows three games at Reynolds this year with the Campbell game yet to come.

I’ll be back in NC for Christmas and will be at the game yelling my head of, with my wife, bro-in-law and his fiancee.

Why not schedule a tough mid-major for this game then? Like a So.Illinois or a St.Joe’s type school. I understand a cupcake for an exam game though.

I like the Reynold’s game. Parking is easy to find and close, and it’s nostalgic to be in the place. I think it gives a lot of people the opportunity to connect or re-connect with that part of our tradition and for some to remember the good ole days.

If only 4,000 people are showing up for a Sunday afternoon game, then it is clear to me the Reynolds experiment isn’t really catching on. I like the idea but evidently many Wolfpack fans don’t. I’m getting tired about the excuses for fans (students or otherwise) not going to games. It’s a 2 hour game on campus. And non-students really have no excuse for not showing up. Oh, they’ll be there for Indiana and Syracuse and UNC. But it’s all these others.

I like the Reynolds games. My freshman year was the last year we played all our games in Reynolds. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why today’s students won’t fill that place to the limit. It’s on campus, you can just walk right on over! Schools that have on-campus facilities don’t know how good they have it. I go back for these games each year for the nostalgia. I was at the Elon game earlier this year and there were almost twice as many people, and that was on black friday. There were no students on campus. I was astounded at the lack of fans there last night.

As for the game itself, I really felt like we played down to their level. Of course, the zebras were doing their best to even the playing field as well. LoBo only had 1 pt, and that was early in the first half. Leslie got two quick fouls, and didn’t get off the bench again until the second half. Late in the game, we just didn’t go inside as much as I would have liked. Painter and Howel should have had a field day. Then again, they had a case of butter fingers far too many times. I really liked seeing CJ Williams step up as a scoring threat. Hopefully, that will continue as the season progresses.

“For the life of me, I can’t figure out why today’s students won’t fill that place to the limit.”

Maybe because we’ve sucked and/or been unwatchable for the last 20 years? No one on campus can remember when we’ve had a winner and thus there is no such thing as bandwagon NC State fans and the sheer number of true fans have been taxed to apathy?

    Nooooo…that can’t possibly be it.

    3 pointers – Scott Wood: 5-9
    Alex Johnson: 1-1
    Rest of Team: 1-13

Even if Syracuse wasn’t a zone team, they’d break one out on us.

    We need another shooter.

There’s no excuse for someone missing this game if they really wanted to go to it. I always verify game times when I’m going to a game, because sometimes games are moved after schedules are made.

But I’ve seen a number of posts on at least two different State fan blogs where the person said they thought the game was at 5pm. Another thought it was at 7pm. It may be that some people really thought they had a lot more time to run Sunday errands before heading out to the game, only to learn that they missed it.

I wouldn’t do that, but some might. Was the game time really misreported anywhere? Has anyone else heard that? It’s puzzling that attendance would be so low in a Reynold’s Coliseum game.

Glad for the win, though. We didn’t play particularly well and we still beat a team that did play pretty well. So I’ll take it. I heard it was the first game back from exams. And it was an opponent we’re supposed to beat. We ran out to a 15 point lead, so I can understand why they might take their foot off the gas. And once you do that, and lose momentum, it can be hard to get back into the game mentally. We can’t afford to play like this very often, so as long as it doesn’t become a trend, I’m OK with the occasional close win over a lesser opponent.

Now let’s just focus on Cuse and play like a different team.

    GO PACK!!!

NCCU played without their best Guard, and the Pack should be thankful for that. Didn’t Scott drain like 7 or 8 threes against ‘Cuse last year? Going to take something like that again to make it interesting.
