Video from Red & White game

In case you missed it, we had some great conversation about both the Red-White Basketball game and the exhibition with Flagler on Monday night in this thread. If you want some educated eye-witness accounts of the events then you should check it out.

Additionally, the following video was put together from the Red-White game that you may enjoy.

Lorenzo looks more polished. I know that we can’t tell much from a scrimmage. But maybe he’s turned a corner?

Deshawn Painter was the one who stood out to me. He and Richard Howell look like they’ve really worked on their post game in the off season. Painter’s step back jumper looked smooth as silk. Hope to see a lot of this on Friday!

“Calvin’s” jump shot actually looks pretty good for a change. The new guard play will be a welcomed change as well. It appears we actually have players that have some ball handling skills now. Howell really does look like he has dropped a lot of weight! This is all promising news!

I am not drinking any Kool Aid this year but I will say I am expecting a much different team on the floor this year. Success in year 1 for Gott would be a middle of the pack finish with some flashes of improved team chemistry along the way. We already know the team is much more structured than the past coaching experiment and that is a good start. In other words we have a coach who is doing what they are supposed to do at this level. Basically…coaching. This is a start and what is need at this level. Time will tell if he can compete but they appear to be prepared either way.

^ you are going to see a better team. we run an offense and we play defense. cant remember the last time we did either.

the ball movement is what you will be most impressed with. in the exhibition there were 24 assists, brown had 8. lots of open shots for scott wood, and great looks for the bigs down low.

Also, Thomas DeThaey looked like he’s come ready to play. That guy is HUGE for someone with his athletic ability and outside shot. Can’t wait to see this team in the meat of the schedule this year!

Where were the Staats’ 3s highlights?

The thing about State is that we often have players who are playing at their skill level and we can’t figure out WHY we can’t get it together as a group. With this basketball team, it’s easy to see where individual players and the coaching staff need to improve in order to get it together.

There’s an actual system in place now, with push for growth in the players, so the coaches seem like they’re doing at least the bare minimum.

Will Scott Wood be coached to get his own shot off the dribble (why little Monte Towe couldn’t coach this, I don’t know) and be allowed a dribble-penetrate-shoot midrange game?

Will Leslie develop the shot to be a seriously great wing with over-the-top rebounding and shot-blocking ability instead of being an undersized, misused, athletic PF?

Will Brown learn the position from good experienced leadership on the team and on the coaching staff? He’s got potential to be the best guard we’ve seen in a quarter century.

Will Vandenburg be allowed to put a snow pea in a wok from farther away than right beside it? He had been playing every inch of 6’8″.

Will Howell fulfill his potential and be everything Tracy Smith was and more? Don’t get me started on what Tracy Smith could have been.

I’m excited. I’m more excited than I was when Sidney took the reigns. There’s more potential for growth both at the individual and team levels than I’ve seen in my life. Sure, the potential is only there because of an underachieving coaching staff before, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we were more pleased than most expect.

We left ~20pts on the floor against flagler, missing easy layups and failing to finish around the rim after incidental contact. I put it down to first game jitters…Them 20pts will make a difference against a real team. Also you could tell that the guys were more focused on developing their chemistry and staying under control as opposed to running all out. Here’s hoping that Gott will get them comfortable with each other and slowly bring the game speed up by the time we play vanderbilt.

Thanks for the insight, guys – I’m more optimistic than I’ve been in a decade…

I noticed this watching AAU videos of recruits a few years ago, but my ADD self cannot pay attention to the video when they have this ridiculous beat in the background. This is exactly why I stopped watching these videos of “highlights.” They show you absolutely nothing but might cause you a seizure.

BTW – Coach Got about to be interviewed on ESPNU during signing day special.

Good interview with Coach Got. He really does say the right things to provide cautious optimism.

BTW – Anyone realize Coach K is only 2 wins away from tying Bobby Knight. 🙂 (sarcasm)
