TOB ouster speculation begins

A Twitter account called Football Rumor Mill (link) attached to this website posted a few items today that we re-tweeted. Haven’t had time to blog much the last few days — letting our message forums carry the heavy load — but wanted to share the tweets.

Multiple sources indicate NC State is likely to dump head coach Tom O’Brien

Early NC State names include Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora and Alabama AHC Sal Sunseri.

Expect former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley to the on staff at NC State, whoever is named the new head coach.

I don’t know where in the hell the Locksley stuff comes from. I need to go back to re-fresh myself some…but, I seem to remember reading some really ‘interesting’ stuff about him about a year ago that left me with an odd taste in my mouth. The takeaway from the reading is that the guy was a real ass-hole. Of course, I could be 100% incorrect and need to re-affirm my memory. On a related note, Backing the Pack said the following (link):

Maybe Sunseri should be added to the POAPS list, even if this is a dubious source. Locksley is the former head coach at New Mexico, who was fired early in the year for general ineptitude and also because a UNM recruit was pulled over and charged with a DWI in a car registered to Locksley. Locksley was an assistant at Maryland from 1998-2002 before moving on to Florida, Illinois, and then New Mexico. So there is a Debbie Yow connection, though I find it hard to believe we would touch Locksley right now.

“I strongly disagree that our recruiting base is anywhere close to a positive. The talent pool is mediocre and significantly overfished. There’s also a longstanding tradition of about half of the local top shelf talent leaving to play for more “bigtime” conferences. ”

This sounds just like the rationale of why we will never do well in basketball… what with UNC and Duke just up the road, we can’t expect to recruit.

    Someone forgot to tell MG.

Football and basketball recruiting are completely different animals. For one thing, basketball recruiting is primarily national in scope. Second, the ACC is the highest level of college play for elite talent. I have NEVER said that you can’t recruit in basketball at NC State. To the contrary, it’s almost impossible NOT to recruit well. Look at recruiting class rankings even during our 20 years in the basketball desert.

So this is how it starts? Okay, how about Skip Holtz.

    LOL @ Pack Mentality.

Unless someone KNOWS something, I have to think that TOB’s job will be evaluated at the end of the season as DY has said… Unless we lose this Saturday and become ‘bowl in-eligible’. It is inconceivable to me that he would keep his job if we don’t make a bowl game. Let’s say you give a coach one “WTF” per season:

    1) Wake Forest
    2) Cincinnati
    3) Boston College
[And that ain’t even including the FSU whitewash]

Even if using the “injury excuse mulligan” (twice), I have a hard time with a complete egg-laying against BC and not being bowl eligible.

    I know something.

    What about Steve Logan?

Quite possibly a very good coach that we could get at a bargain price.

I certainly see many parallels between Gottfried and Tommy Bowden. Down to leaving in the middle of their last season in coaching, about 3 months apart. The both coached for over ten years, got “burned out” in one way or the another. Spent a couple years in broadcasting to gain a new perspective and recharge.

I don’t know who the best coach would be but I wouldn’t be upset if I heard it was Coach Bowden. Heck, even Terry Bowden seems to be doing well at North Alabama going 26-8 in two years and this season.

BTW- Someone at NC State needs to update Coach Gottfried’s Wikipedia picture.

Okay, we are all very frustrated but I have to believe that TOB and the staff are just as frustrated as we are, even more so. Let’s let this work itself out. We are having a very bad year and we’ve had them before. Remember, we lost an AA quarterback and some great defensive players. I’m frustrated with TOB blaming the players too but that seems to be his nature. Let’s let D. Yow do her job and evaluate after the season and trust her to make the right decision, whatever that may be. Then we can pray about next year.

EVERY team that we’ve lost to this year, we beat last year…

Please tell me which direction this “program” is headed…

I’ve seen Tommy Bowden in the ACC Network studios. Unlike Gottfried, TB is a fucking idiot. No thanks.

Looking at TOB’s long history as a coach it would be very difficult to get a better coach. I’m afraid if we can him now, we are in for a long slide. Again many of you guys are short sided. It took Coach K and Dean S. a while to build their programs but now who can argue with what they built. Sheridan the greatest NCSU coach ever? How many times did I sit in the stands and chant his apparent mantra; run, run, run, -run, run, pass, – run, run, run, etc. etc. etc… He was a solid coach in an easier time. Can TOB if you want but be prepared for 4-8 seasons. Tom Reed, Monty Kiffin any one?

  13. TruthBKnown Returns 11/15/2011 at 6:36 PM #

Pack85EE, we have 5 wins this season. Aside from 2010, we have nothing but 5- and 6-win seasons under TOB. This season quite possibly will be just more of the same.

If you think winning 5-6 games is that much better than winning 4 games, so be it. But I’d rather take that chance and MAYBE get a better coach. Because if we “sink” back to 4-win seasons, we won’t have to sink very far to get to that point.

^ I have no idea but thats funny right there. Love the use of the Ten Crack Comandments!

TOB has run his course though. I mean if we are gonna suck can we at least we can be fun to watch cant we?!?

  16. mak4dpak 11/15/2011 at 8:45 PM #

What is the man 50-50 in 5 years, no win against every division opponent on the road. Yea he deserves to stay another year, he doesn’t cheat, he defends the school. etc. I can’t believe this BS. I can’t stand the thought of another one of these subpar seasons, with an OC like Bible, DC like Archer. Face it, the TOB experiment except for the 5 wins against the smurfs, has gone south, and change is needed if we truly want to be a contender. TOB is a nice guy, but it takes alot more than that to make a winner. He came to State claiming to create a winner like he had at BC, and even the BC fans were glad to be rid of him. Put some excitement back in football, and it starts with a coach, who has some emotion on the field, instead of standing there game after game with his headsets on and arms folded. BORING!!!!!! Not what I buy season tickets to see. Do us a favor DY, plan for the future!

  17. gopack 17 11/15/2011 at 10:28 PM #

Hey mak4dpak is SPOT on!! It is time to end this experiment and move on to a new one. TOB is a good guy, disciplined Marine, and runs a great program. We all have the upmost respect for the guy. But let’s take a look at the offense, IT IS TOTALLY PREDICTABLE….are you kidding PRO style…..whatever. We run the same slant play out to the WR such as TJ and cover 2 block and we get crushed off the line by BC, and we run it like 5 or more times in the game. It is just plain painful to watch. There is just absolutley no creativity. We need a more dymamic group that can spur on excitment among the players and the fan base. This comes with a new regime. We don’t utilize the talent on the field. The lingering of Archer and Bible will just bring the house of cards down sooner or later.

Explain to me why we should be able to put up a fence around NC for recruiting?
Why would anyone come to State when they can go to an SEC school?
SEC school – Easier to qualify, its the SEC and easier to graduate.
NC State – Harder to get into, middle tier ACC school and something like a 50% grad rate.
    No brainer…

Who are these announcers? This has the most positive commentary about State that I have heard in 5 years. And Princeton is always a golden child too. What a great change.

  20. mak4dpak 11/16/2011 at 10:57 PM #

Good comments Pack Mentality, I agree, just chose the wrong blog to put it on, as this one is on ousting TOB.

Pack Mentality you should repost this on the Princeton blog on Gottfried.
