State Football Stat of the Day

Last week I laid out State’s roadmap to Charlotte on December 4th.

Today, I’ll add this one:

Beat Carolina a fifth consecutive year. In the 116-year history of the rivalry (100 games), State has only beaten Carolina five consecutive seasons exactly once: Dick Sheridan won five straight between 1988-92.

I have a bad gut feeling this is UNC’s year. That feeling comes from the many years of disappointing State athletics.

I was at State during those Sheridan years. Still have my t-shirt, showing the wolf spanking the ram talking about the 5 year streak. I would SO love to buy a new one.

However, as a Life Long Wolfpack fan…I too have a bad feeling.

I’d have a worse feeling if it was on the road…I like us at home. We just need a playmaking receiver to step up. If that happens we will be fine and make it 5 vs the UNC Assholes.

We need to hope withers isnt a good in game coach.

We need to hope that UNC is banged up. Their bi-week is the week after our game. They should be.

We need to hope that their QB situation has been rattled either because of sacks, pressure from fan base, or injury issues.

We need to come into the carter like a rabid dog and be absolutely unrelenting as a crowd and a football team.

    WOO WOO!

I had a bad feeling about our last two meetings with the Holes. I feel good about this one. We have a class act running our football program, and we have a disciplined team. We’re better than they are (in every sense of the word), and we will show it on the football field this year.

I’m ready to stop being scared “because this is State”. It’s time we move forward and embrace the new era of State athletics. We have a good administration that finally WANTS to win, we have good coaches, and we have good player personnel. I feel like our day has arrove.

I don’t know why necessarily. It seems even going back to the Sheridan days we play them better in Chapel Hill than we do in Raleigh. Maybe I’m misremembering, but it seems that way to me.

    ^^ What TBK said.

I’m also noticing how little difference my feelings in the past have made in the outcome of games.

i’m on board with optimism too — even if it’s only because a defeatist attitude is no fun to have.

probably, UNX has more talent than we do, but our team is now five years in TOB’s system, they are his players he has coached all the way through, and TOB is a solid coach if not a superstar.

the only question i have on this team is Glennon, but even if it takes him a few games to get it together, i see him, and the whole team, being ready by the time we hit UNX on the schedule

    Go Pack!

UNX is not nearly as shaken up this year. All the talent that was recruited by the dirty tactics (who wasn’t kicked off last year) is eligible. The storm has quieted down and they have a chip on their shoulder.

Hopefully justice will provale from the NCAA mid season and start demoralizing the team. No matter what, they probably know that all they have to play for is beating the pack.

What in hoc said. They are scary talented.

  12. ncsu1987 09/01/2011 at 12:12 PM #

I like optimism, but she is a fickle little bitch. Especially on sports blogs. This will be a tough game any way you slice it. UNX will likely have the best defense in the league (front to back) and the game will come down to offensive execution. We have our question marks, but they do, too. “Rookie” QB’s on both sides, but I’d have to say advantage State there, at least on paper. State better come out guns blazing, because this has the potential to be the season for the Heels.

I recall that unc had a streak of 7 agin NCSU.
THAT is the streak I would love to see topped by NCSU. And every year it continues, it will be sweeter.
5 would be sweet bec. it will tie Sheridan’s record. We’ll have a ball with our clever crowd participation in a few weeks, win or lose.
6 would be sweeter bec. it will set a new record NCSU win streak – IN chapel hill! A unc team that should still have as much talent before NCAA scholarship reduction penalties takes effect. This could be the toughest one to win bec. their sanctions won’t be felt much yet.
7 would be sweeter still bec. NCSU will be tied with unc’s streak, at long last. Please, Lord, let it be. NCAA bowl and recruiting penalties taking their toll on UNC.
8 would be the sweetest of all. NCSU, if the streak can extend to 7, will be able to go to Chapel Hill and face a unc team that has gone through recruiting restrictions and bowl bans. UNC could be at the bottom of the acc by then, although NCSU might conceivably be in the SEC by then.

ncsu1987, I thought UNX’s secondary is expected to be pretty bad this year.

  15. runwiththepack 09/01/2011 at 1:54 PM #

Playing NCSU should be their “super bowl” this year,

since the Oct. 28 meeting with the NCAA should result in at least one year bowl ban. 3 year bowl ban would be more appropo.

  16. packplantpath 09/01/2011 at 2:27 PM #

Yea, I don’t follow UNC that closely, but though their secondary was expected to be the weak link.

  17. JEOH2 09/01/2011 at 5:32 PM #

I certainly hope we’ll beat UNC at home…baring anything else crazy we should be at full strength…

But you all are crazy if you think this is a given…like what was said earlier, Withers appears to be the type of coach the players may rally behind and I believe he may go for broke considering he has very little to lose…if he is a solid in-game coach, with the talent he has…they may have a better year w/ Withers than they ever did with Butch…just…maybe…

^^Only one returning starter in the LB corps (IIRC), and the defensive backfield was suspect before some injuries and defections;also,on the DL Coples is rumored to be up to his a$$ in the agent prong and surely Donte Paige-Moss will be in jail by the time we play them (LOL).

I have a GOOD feeling. It will be FIVE in a row and it will set us up nicely for….. SIX in a row! GO PACK!
