Hurricane Irene Open Entry

Our message board community has been talking about Hurricane Irene in this thread.

We thought thought we would open this entry for our readers to share real-time information on the Hurricane as needed.

I just ran across a neat use of Google maps by WRAL — by clicking here you will see how they are tracking damage & flooding reports by location.

Stay tuned for more throughout the day.

COWDOG- my parents live right across the river from you. Shady Banks in Little Washington on the other side of the river, just a few hundred yards up towards washington. They said their house is rocked — 6 inches of water inside, septic tank backed up into the house, tree fell on it…. sounds like a disaster.

This thing is a freaking bear. NYC is in for it. They have no idea up there.

It did not rain here and the dogs dug up the front yard last night.

the outer banks got the worst soundside flooding I’ve ever seen there (at least 25 years). There is a house that was actually demolished by the sound, something I’ve never heard of happening before.

Other than having to wake up at various hours of the night to clear our garden drain of debris, our garden apartment(basement level) in Brooklyn is dry.

Cowdog, I used to live down Whichard’s beach road and even graduated from Chocowinity High – back when they still had a HS. Sorry to see so much damage and hope you escape w/o too much damage.

From Wilson I’ve experienced a few hurricanes. Live in manhattan. What the biggest overreaction ever!!! Shut down the subway – unprecedented. What a joke. Category 1 when it hit cape lookout thats not that powerful. I tell people up here only 1 of 10 ever live up to the hype.

What was it like growing up at Whichard’s beach? We always go there for gas on our boat, and sometimes a burger. A lot of partying?

I can remember putting in at Whichard’s when my daughter was barely walking. My wife kept one of those “collar type” life jackets for infants on her. We went across the river on a very calm afternoon and were fishing out of the main channel. When I started back that afternoon, the wind had shifted and it was rough as a cob. I had to run into the wind to try to keep things under control. I was in my bass boat and my wife was holding my daughter sitting backwards in the rear seat. She was really anxious that my daughter was getting wet and probably was scared.

When we got back to the docks, my daughter was asleep and didn’t remember a thing…

I used to fish the Pamlico River, Blounts Bay, Bayview and across to Aurora, Tar River(out of Grimesland), Lake Phelps, but my favorite spot was out of Hobucken in the Pamlico Sound. Caught an absolute ton of trout and croakers back then!

We did a few night trips down to Bayview and would set nets in the river and fish them all night..A trip across the river up Blounts Bay in the dark is a neat boat ride.
